Work Text:

The air in the city had turned crisp, carrying that specific bite of February that made people bury their noses into wool scarves. For Renjun, Jeno, and Jaemin, this Valentine’s Day felt different - not because their love was new, but because it had settled into a comfortable, rhythmic hum that they all wanted to celebrate with something tangible.

Their story hadn’t begun with fireworks or grand declarations. Instead, it started on a rainy autumn afternoon, months ago, in a small cafe tucked away from the bustling streets. Renjun had been there, sketchbook in hand, capturing the way the light filtered through the window, casting patterns on the worn wooden table. Jeno was seated nearby, quietly reading a veterinary journal, his calm presence almost blending into the background. Jaemin had just come in from the cold, shaking off his coat, his bright blond hair still damp from the drizzle.

A chance collision at the counter - Jaemin accidentally knocking over Renjun’s coffee - sparked a conversation. Apologies turned into laughter, and laughter into shared stories. They discovered a surprising harmony in their differences. Renjun’s artistic soul, Jeno’s gentle pragmatism, and Jaemin’s confident ambition. What began as casual meetings over coffee soon blossomed into something deeper, a connection that felt both exhilarating and grounding.

They found themselves drawn together not just by attraction, but by a mutual understanding - a shared desire to support each other’s dreams and fears. Renjun admired Jaemin’s determination to carve out his own path despite family expectations. Jeno was captivated by Renjun’s ability to see beauty in the mundane. Jaemin found solace in Jeno’s steady kindness.

Now, on this Valentine’s Day, their love was no longer a fragile spark but a steady flame.

Renjun stepped into the bookstore early on a chilly Thursday afternoon, the bell above the door chiming softly behind him. The scent of aged paper and polished wood wrapped around him like a familiar cloak. He moved with quiet purpose, his eyes scanning the shelves with the precision of an artist searching for the perfect shade of blue.

His mind was a whirl of thoughts - not just about the gift, but about Jaemin. The way Jaemin’s eyes lit up when he talked about his future, the subtle tension in his shoulders when he mentioned his father’s expectations. Renjun wanted to give something that wasn’t just a present, but a symbol of support, a tangible reminder that he believed in Jaemin’s dreams.

He paused in front of a section labeled Business & Strategy. The titles were dense, filled with jargon and graphs, but Renjun’s gaze settled on a sleek, leather-bound volume titled Innovative Business Strategies for the Modern Leader. It was expensive, but Renjun didn’t hesitate. He imagined Jaemin flipping through its pages late at night, finding inspiration and reassurance.

As he picked up the book, his fingers brushed the smooth cover, and a small smile tugged at his lips. This was more than a gift - it was a promise. A promise that Renjun would stand by Jaemin, no matter how heavy the legacy he carried.

He made his way to the counter, where Jisung was struggling with a mountain of Valentine’s Day orders. Renjun’s voice was calm but firm as he requested the gift wrap, specifying a simple, elegant black ribbon. It was understated, like Jaemin himself - never flashy, but always meaningful.

Jaemin arrived at the bookstore on Friday afternoon, his blond hair catching the sunlight as he pushed open the door. The warmth inside was a stark contrast to the cold wind outside, and he took a moment to breathe it in.

His thoughts were occupied by Jeno’s gentle nature. He knew Jeno’s weekends were spent at the animal shelter, covered in dirt and fur, his hands gentle but sure. Jaemin admired that quiet dedication, the way Jeno’s eyes softened when he spoke about his dream of becoming a veterinarian.

Jaemin wandered toward the Animals & Nature section, his fingers trailing along the spines of books about wildlife and care. His heart skipped when he found a beautifully illustrated encyclopedia of dog breeds and veterinary care. It was comprehensive, detailed - exactly what Jeno would need to deepen his knowledge and fuel his passion.

He imagined Jeno’s face lighting up as he flipped through the pages, the way he always got when he talked about the animals he cared for. Jaemin wanted this gift to say, without words, I see you. I support you.

At the counter, he asked for a wrapping with a bright blue ribbon, a color that reminded him of Jeno’s calm and steady presence. The employee smiled knowingly, as if sensing the depth behind the choice.

Jeno entered the bookstore on Saturday morning, the early light casting long shadows across the wooden floor. His brown hair was tousled, and his usual calm demeanor was tinged with a rare nervousness. Choosing a gift for Renjun was harder than he expected.

Renjun was an artist, a dreamer, someone who saw the world through colors and emotions. Jeno wasn’t sure how to capture that in a gift. He wandered through the aisles, his eyes catching on a section labeled Fiction & Romance. It seemed an odd choice at first, but then he spotted a novel with a cover that mirrored a painting Renjun had shown him - a serene garden scene with three figures intertwined in quiet harmony.

Jeno’s heart pounded as he picked up the book. It wasn’t just a novel. It was a reflection of their relationship, a symbol of the peace and love they shared. He imagined Renjun’s surprise, the way his eyes would soften when he saw the cover.

He felt a blush creep up his neck as he took it to the counter. Jeno chose a delicate silver ribbon for the wrapping, something simple yet elegant, much like Renjun’s understated style.

The bookstore’s youngest employee, Jisung, watched the third member of the trio approach the register with a sigh. To him, the coincidence was staggering. He had rung up all three men, noting their distinct hair colors - Renjun’s sharp black, Jaemin’s bright blond, and now Jeno’s soft brown.

Donghyuck, a senior employee with years of experience and a knowing smile, noticed Jisung’s exhaustion. He leaned casually against the counter, his voice low but amused. “It’s Valentine’s, Jisung. Let the boys be in love.”

Jisung shook his head, a reluctant smile tugging at his lips. “It’s just... all three of them. Same shop, same week. It’s like a story.”

Donghyuck chuckled. “Maybe it is. Maybe it’s the kind of story that reminds us why we do this job. Not just selling books, but being part of moments like these.”

The day of the exchange arrived under a sky so heavy and grey it seemed to press down on the city itself. The air was thick with the promise of rain, and the streets were slick with the remnants of an earlier drizzle. Outside the bookstore where they had all unknowingly chosen their gifts, Renjun, Jaemin, and Jeno gathered, each carrying a parcel wrapped with care, their shapes familiar yet mysterious.

They had all dressed for the occasion - coats tailored to perfection, hair styled with deliberate care - looking like a curated image of modern romance, a trio bound not just by affection but by a shared understanding. The plan had been theirs from the start -  a small, thoughtful gift for each other to mark Valentine’s Day, a quiet celebration of their bond rather than an extravagant display.

Jaemin was the first to break the silence, a playful smile tugging at his lips as he glanced at the others. “So, we all ended up at the same bookstore, huh? I guess great minds really do think alike.”

Renjun chuckled softly, adjusting the strap of his bag. “I suppose it makes sense. It’s the kind of place that feels... right. Thoughtful.”

Jeno nodded, his eyes bright despite the dull sky. “I was worried I wouldn’t find something that really fit Renjun. But then I saw this book, and it just felt like it was meant to be.”

Jaemin’s gaze flicked to Jeno’s parcel, then to Renjun’s. “Well, I’m just glad we all put thought into this. It means more than any fancy dinner or bouquet.”

Renjun stepped forward, holding out his gift first. The heavy business tome felt solid and reassuring in his hands. “Jaemin, I know how much pressure you carry. This is for your future. The one you’re building, not the one anyone else expects.”

Jaemin’s eyes softened as he took the book, fingers tracing the embossed title. “Renjun, this means everything. You see me. Not just the surface.”

Jaemin then turned to Jeno, offering his own carefully wrapped package. “For you. Because I know how much you love those animals, and how much you want to help them.”

Jeno’s thumb immediately traced the cover of the dog encyclopedia, a grin spreading across his face. “This is perfect. I can’t wait to dive in.”

Finally, Jeno stepped forward, a shy smile playing on his lips as he handed Renjun the romance novel. “I wasn’t sure at first... but then I saw this cover. It reminded me of your painting - the one with the three of us in the garden. I thought maybe... this could be a way to say what I can’t always put into words.”

Renjun’s breath caught. The book was more than a novel - it was a mirror of their shared moments, a symbol of their connection. “Jeno, this... this means more than you know.”

The moment of tenderness was punctuated by a sudden drop of cold water on Jeno’s nose. Then another. Within seconds, the grey sky opened up. Jeno quickly unfurled the single umbrella he had brought, holding it aloft.

"We can't all fit under this," Jaemin pointed out, trying to huddle closer to Jeno’s side while Renjun stood on the periphery.

An argument immediately broke out - a playful, frantic debate about who was the most susceptible to a cold and who deserved the most protection from the rain. Jeno tried to shield Renjun, Renjun tried to push the umbrella toward Jaemin, and Jaemin just tried to keep them all together.

"Oh, forget it!" Renjun shouted over the sound of the downpour. He didn't wait for a consensus. He tucked his new book tightly under his coat and bolted down the sidewalk toward the restaurant where they had their dinner reservation.

Startled, Jaemin and Jeno shared a wide-eyed look before breaking into a sprint behind him. They ran through the rain, laughing and splashing through puddles, the weight of their new books tucked safely against their chests, heading toward a warm meal and a night that belonged only to them.
