Chapter 1: Dead Roots [ PROLOGUE ]

Chapter Text

The Restaurant was in the process of closing up for the night. The servers were wiping down tables, the cooks cleaning up the kitchen. muffled voices could be heard from outside. suddenly A rock comes hurling through a window. sound fills the dinning room. Voices full of hate.

a young woman turns to her co-worker. “ what are they saying? “ her voice laced with a thick spanish accent. Her co-worker stands stiff. her eyes trainned on the shattered window. a bead of sweat drips down her olive skin. “ they want us out.. we need to get Mr Trapani..” she said, her voice barely audbly compared to the yells echoing from outside. “ they want us out ? Giulia what does that mean?” she turned to see her co-worker speed walking to the kitchen doors. she quickly followed behind her. despite moving away from the front, the voices only got louder and more violent. the pair of women soon push through the doors.

Upon entering the Kitchen, they saw half of her co-workers were gathered together. The women began to push through the crowed to find friends or maybe family who also worked at the same resturerant. a voice called out ‘catalina’ and one of the women spun around , searching for the source of the voice. suddenlly a pair of arms grabbed her. “Catalina”. One of the women sighed and looked up at the figure holding her. “Francisco - it has only gotten worse… they threw a rock through the window.” Francisco frowned. concern etched into his face. “that is far from good.” he sighed. before either of the two could say anymore , someone spoke up. “Okay, I want all of you to clean up as quickly as possible, and head home.” the voice was deep, and indifferent to the situation. “ I would also advise you not to go out of the front. be carefuly”. The ‘speech’ was not long, but it got the message across. clean quickly and get out. Catalina, and the rest of the staff, dispersed to continue cleaning. Catalina walked a few steps towards the door before she turned around. She saw her coworker, a young women with a child, crouched down. she seemed to be talking with her daughter. ‘it would be unsafe for them to walk alone’. she took a deep breath to steel her nerves before walking over. “Hello Aurel” she said softely, pausing a few steps beside the woman. Aurel carefully scooped up her child before standing up. Her tired eyes met Catalina’s. “oh hi Catalina. do you need somthing?” Aurel said while smiling kindly at her. “I just wanted to ask if you would like me and Francisco to walk you and Sienna home?”. Aurel gently placed her hand on her daughter, Sienna’s, head. “I would really apprecate that Catalina. thank you”, she touched catalina’s arm before walking off to go clean. Catalina took another deep breath before pushing through the kitchan doors into the dinning room.

the yells and screams from the street seemed only to get louder. more angery and violen t. Catalina could only imagine what the mob wanted, whenever this happened, the staff would get Mr Trapani. ‘whom I am just reazling does stay this late’. Catalina grabbed a wet cloth and began to scrub the tables. a pit forming in her stomach the longer she stayed in the room. ‘ anything could happen… they might burn down the resturant. like they did to the Casatis’ a shiver ran down her back, but she continued on. The grim from the table came off with the water, and catalina moved on to the next table. She cleaned five more tables before her and her co-workers finished cleaning the dinning room. Catalina quickly walked over to Giulia, gentaly placing a hand on her shoulder. “Giulia?” Catalina spoke up. Giulia jump a little, tense from the situation outside. “oh Catalina.. Do you need something?” Giulia turned to face her. Her necklace swaying as she moved. “I finished my tables- are you, Aurel, Alvaro, and Francisco done?” Catalina asked. she was the newest server. she may have had this job for several months, but the fear of messing up led her to report to Giulia after almost every task. Giulia looked up to examin the dinning room. She could See Aurel putting away her cleaning materials, Francisco along with her. A man stood over a table near the window, one of his arms just a stump. “it seems like Alvaro is on his last table. You can help him if you’d like-” Giulia responded, without looking back at Catalina. It was clear Giulia was getting tired of Catalinas anxities, ‘I can tell’. Catalina sighed. before walking towards Alvaro.

“Alvaro” She called out. The yells from outside had finally fallen quiet. she couldn’t tell if this was a bad sign or not, but she pushed those thoughts to the back of her head. Alvaro didn’t stop cleaning, or look up at her. “Hi Catalina.. I’m almost done here. I’m assuimg Giulia sent you over here?”. The pit formed in her stomach again, eating away at her confidence. “well- yes she did.. bu-” “its okay, Catalina, I will take the pity help” Alvaro interupted her before turning around to face her. Catalina chuckled nervously. Alvaro handed her the cloth he was using, and she quickly Finished off the table. the entire time Catalina was cleaning, Alvaro was staring at the window. Catalina was to nervous to stop cleaning, and see what he was looking at. “Catalina are you finished?” he asked without looking back. Catalina stood up straight and looked at her work. “I think so-” She said as she turned to see the window. Alvaro’s face was illuminated by an orange glow.. a glow from a previously dark street. there is no lamps or street lights on. the mob had broken them earlier in the night.
