Chapter Text

Sam and Dean hadn’t been very close, ever. Dean was the older brother that would fart on your pillow and give you pink eye and Sam was the younger brother that would beg to be player 1 and tell mom if you didn’t give him the controller. The two brothers were constantly butting heads no matter what age they were. The boys spent most of their childhood wearing the get-along t shirt. Their mother wanted them to be close seeing as she didn’t have any siblings growing up, but for the boys it seemed impossible. When Sam went away to college Dean got jealous, he couldn’t help it. Who wouldn’t be jealous that their baby brother got into such a prestigious college while they wasted away working at a McDonald’s flipping burgers and getting yelled at by 60 year old ladies who would “do anything” for their grandbaby. Definitely sounds like my kind of Friday night! Dean hated working there, there was never any hot chicks at McDonald’s, they all spent their time in the mall across the street or at the Cafe next door because it was a small business. Most of those girls just went it, took pictures, then walked out. Not even ordering anything. What’s the point of going to a coffee shop just to take a few selfies. Dean couldn’t wrap his head around it.

Dean was closing up for the day when his phone rang, he reached in his pocket and pulled out his old ass blackberry. “Hello?”
He didn’t hear anything on the other line for a bit until finally someone spoke.
“Dean?”
God it was Sam. Dean tried his best to sound nice but that was always hard for him. Probably the reason why he couldn’t get an actual job.
“Hey Sammy..what’s up? I thought you weren’t talking to me” Dean snickered and continued getting ready to close the store, squishing his shoulder up to hold the phone against his ear while he did so.
“Dean..look I’m sorry about all the stuff I said. It was childish and I’m really sorry”
“Would you look at that, Sam Winchester apologizing! I thought I’d never live to see the day. Hell I thought you’d never live to see the day.” He laughed and giggled to himself while Sam rolled his eyes and scoffed to himself.
“Yeah yeah laugh it up..”
and so Dean did, he laughed. Pretty hard actually
“O-ok Dean you can stop now”
“Ok ok I’m sorry..”! He slowed down his giggling and took a final breath before he stopped
“So why’d you call?”
“Look Dean I don’t know what’s going on but a few guys went missing a few blocks away from my dorm. Good friends of mine, they’d never run off, they’d never get drunk I swear.”
“Ok get to the point Sam…are you in trouble? Is that what you’re trying to say?”
“I think so. When the police found them they were in a tree, their stomachs slashed open. I dunno the cops….the cops say that it was a bear or maybe a mountain lion but…I’ve seen bear scratches and they don’t look anything like that…it was like..something I never heard of.”
“So what you think there’s a Bigfoot roaming around?”
“Well there’s another thing..”
“What is it..”
“When they found them they said their hearts were missing, just gone like almost surgically removed..”
“Sounds like a creepazoid. So what do you want me to do?”
“Could you just..maybe come over and spend a couple days with me”
“Aww little Sammy’s scared of a wittle monster”
“Shut up!”
Sam hung up the phone and couldn’t stop smiling, he loved his brother. He hated him but he loved him. He was glad to see his brother after being angry with each-other for a while. For now he just hoped Dean made it over safely.
While Dean was folding his clothes to drive on over there he heard a tap at his window, probably nothing, in fact he didn’t even notice it the first time it happened. Maybe hail, or rain, or a bird throwing rocks. Whatever it was it didn’t really scare Dean. This stomach opening, heart taking monster Sam told him about earlier did however.
How he could protect Sam from something like that without possibly getting himself and other killed. If it were human, which Dean was hoping, then he could call the police and tell them he’s white so maybe they’ll come in time. Yeah that’d work. He heard the tapping again. He looked over at his window and saw nothing. He grabbed his suite case and dragged it down the stairs like an idiot when he could’ve just carried it to take it down the stairs like all normal people do but he didn’t have the time. He unlocked the trunk and shoved his suite case in there along with his gun and his Nintendo ds. What? A man’s gotta play games on the toilet, ok.

He drove for a few hours before he started to get an eerie feeling. Like something was stalking him. He stopped at a gas station to hopefully have enough gas to get him all the way there. When he saw it. It looked like a big black dog but buffer. It made Dean kinda jealous. Why couldn’t he have big boxy shoulders like that.

The dog just started and looked like it tried to catch its breath. Dean felt surprisingly not scared of the dog at all. It was creepy as hell but he wasn’t scared of it or anything. He actually kinda wanted to pet it. “Here doggy. Come here! Just one second ok!”
The dog hesitantly walked into the light, looking more and more like a regular tall black dog instead of the mysterious shadow dog he saw before.
“Can I pet you buddy?

The dog growled, he could see its teeth, sharp, stained a rusty yellow, he looked to be foaming at the mouth but Dean didn’t really care. He always wanted a dog. Slowly the dog inched close to Dean, he held his palm open above the dogs head hoping it would either bite him or nudge its head against it. The dog made an almost whimper sound and rolled onto its back, waiting for Dean to scratch it. Dean excitedly got to his knees and rubbed the dogs belly.
“Aww look at you! Who’s a good dog!” He smiled and patted the dogs stomach while it panted and barked happily. It rolled back up onto his feet and wagged its tail.
“Do you know sit? Sit!”
The dog sat.
“Cool. Do you know get me a beer” He joked. But the dog walked into the gas station and to the cooler section, Dean followed it in and saw the dog laying by the fridge with cans of beers in it. “The fuck…you know English?” The dog walked out the gas station and towards the impala. “Woah woah hey, get away from her” The dog scratched and the cars passenger door nuzzling the door handle. “Ohh I see..no way. Why would I ever let you in MY car, you’d drag mud in it! Get it all dirty. NO WAY!” The dog gave him those sweet puppy eyes and tilted its head. Dean couldn’t say no to something so cute. So as always he folded and let him in “…ok fine. But I swear if you chew on my seats or get so much as a scratch on my damn car I’ll kick you to the curb” Meanwhile Sam was anxiously waiting for Dean to get there, he half expected Dean to already be dead. Whatever was out there was clearly dangerous and he knew it was risky to even suggest that Dean come over and stay with him but he couldn’t help it. He was scared. He was that sacred little kid again who would cry out for his mom when he heard something fall over in the closet. He trusted Dean would make it safely though, he always did. Somehow. There was a knock at the door and Sam rushed to answer it. “Dean..it’s late, what took you so long?” His question was answered not a second later when he looked down by Dean’s right leg seeing a tall grey dog. “You rescued a dog on the way here??” “Dude it practically forced me to take it in..his name is Frank. He’s a cutie.” “He doesn’t look like a Frank…” “Well he’s a Frank to me” The dog walked off and disappeared into the forest behind the campus. The dog slowly started to creep in and the moon got just a bit brighter, it looked like a scene from a horror film but to Sam it was almost calming. He had so much going on lately, with him and with his relationships. He couldn’t explain any of it and was scared to reach out for help so he confided in the quiet of the night and beauty of the moon. Or that’s what he likes to think. The real reason is probably more to do with him missing his mom reading him bedtime stories under the soft lit moon when he was kid. “Guess he’s outta here. I heard dogs can sense stuff. Maybe he senses your depression..heh” “Yeah real funny” Sam rolled his eyes and walked over to his kitchen. “Well I’m just glad you’re here…I thought you were dead or worse..” Dean furrowed his brows and smiled “Worse? The fuck could be worse than dying” “You forgetting to come over here and I die!” “Why did you want me to come so bad anyways, I mean aren’t you an Jess still together?” Sam closed the fridge and stood for a second thinking about what to say. Was this the right time, the right moment. No. He just scoffed and walked towards his water jug that he kept in his house for some reason. “N-no…she..Dean that’s not important right now!” “Well I mean we’re just standing here, I’m trying to make some small talk! You could at least make me some food or something. Or better, turn on the TV” Just as Dean went to reach for the remote the power shut off throughout the entire building. “What the…” “God damn it…” “Someone behind on bills?” “No I paid them yesterday, probably just a power outage” The boys decided to head to bed it’d been a long night and it’s not like they could do much anyways with the power being out. Sam fought with Dean about who got to sleep in Sam’s bed, Sam said something along the lines of “It’s my house I own the bed I get to sleep in it” but all Dean could hear was “Dean blah blah blah I’m angry for some reason blah blah blah” And so he kicked him off the bed and forced him to sleep on his couch.
