He won’t use it, he probably doesn’t even have a phone, probably. But gosh he is charming, in his own weird way.
That’s what Marcia thought to herself after giving Two-Bit Mathew’s her phone number, trying to rationalize her decision. She wasn’t thinking, how could she have done this? Her, Marcia Meyrink had given a greaser her phone number.
Cherry and her had a long walk home, they had refused to drive with Bob and Randy while they were drunk, she didn’t mind none, Marcia didn’t like Bob much and she liked Randy plenty, but never felt the way she did for those few hours with Two-Bit Mathews. Marcia twirled the ring that Randy had dropped when leaving the drive-in on her finger, she’d have to stop by his house on the way back to give it to her.
“Marcia, are you listening to me?” Cherry asked, her piercing green eyes staring at her, waiting for an answer.
“No, uh sorry Cherry, what were you talking about?” Marcia answered, gosh she sure was pretty like this.
“I hope Bob doesn’t go after those Greasers, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself, it would be my fault,” The redhead girl said, a strong gust of wind blew past them and she shivered.
Marcia put he jacket around Cherrys shoulders, “I’m sure they’ll be fine, Randy usually keeps Bob under control,” However she didn’t sound very convinced about her statement.
Cherry nodded, and they quickly made it to her house, Marcia walked her inside then went to the Addersons to drop off his ring. However, instead of being greeted by the kind, tall Soc she was so used to, the door was opened by Mrs. Adderson. No please don’t tell me they went after those greasers.Marcia felt a sinking dread in her stomach.
“Hi Mrs. Adderson, is Randy home, or did he stop by recently?” Please tell me they stopped by and they are just watching the stars, or at Bobs watching West Side Story, please.
Randy was different like that, he’d rather watch the stars with Bob than jump some greasers maybe that’s why Bob everyone liked him so much.
“Oh, no I haven’t seen him, I thought he was with you and Cherry? Did you need him for something I could give him a message”
“Oh yes, I have his ring, can you give it to him when he comes back?” She handed Mrs. Anderson the ring and hurried home.
Marcia couldn’t fall asleep. So, she waited by the phone all night, whether for Two-Bit or Randy, even she didn’t know. She was one of the few Soc girls that had a phone in her room, she was lucky that she did. At around three am, she got a call, Marcia practically jumped onto the phone and when she saw Randy’s number appear, her face feel slightly, she had been waiting for Two-Bit to call all night.
“Hey Rand, you okay? Did you get home alright?” Marcia asked gently. She was worried but also mad, why would he call her now? Why wasn’t he home when she went to his house?
“Bob, he’s gone… he wanted to jump those Greasers you were talking with, and we found two of them. The one Cherry was talking with, Curtis, and that scrawny one with that scar” Johnny, Marcia remembers to his named. “We went to jump them, holding Curtis under the water, Bob wanted to drown him, then that scrawny kid, he took out a switch, and killed Bob. I never got to say goodbye, David pulled me away before I could get to him. He’s gone Marcia.” Any anger she felt towards him disappeared at the sound of his voice, Randy sounded different, hollow, like he aged ten years since she last heard him.
Marcia never liked Bob, but he made Cherry happy enough, she knew that she could make Cherry happier though, and she always knew Randy favored him over her, but that was fine.
“Oh Rand, I’m so sorry, have you told Cherry yet?” Marcia asked carefully, like she was talking to a wounded animal.
“No, I was hoping you could, you know her better, besides I’d rather not talk with anyone else.” Randy said in that same voice, not at all like the sweet soft voice she had heard him use before with Bob her.
“Yeah I can do that, did your mom give the ring I dropped off? The one Bob gave you a while back?”
“Yeah my mom gave it to me, listen Marcia I gotta go, I’ll talk to ya soon alright?”
“Yeah, of course, bye Rand”
Marcia didn’t call Cherry after that, she was probably asleep and wanted her to have at least one more night of peace, before her world turns upside down. She couldn’t believe it, Bob, dead? She never liked him, and he didn’t like her, but she thought he would always be there to annoy her, but now he won’t be, never again.
