Beginning

Summary:

every story has a start. that fact is true for Aya, too.

Work Text:

Light in the middle of the darkness, a burst of a dying star.

And so, she was alive.

She had no name. No purpose. No mind to question why she was here.

Stars were born wherever she stepped, the cosmos dancing along with her, singing whenever she did.

But one day, she asked the universe 'Why?'

'Why was I created? What is my purpose?'

The universe reached out, but didn't respond. It couldn't understand like she could.

She couldn't understand it. That couldn't be how it was. So, she went off in search of a greater purpose.

One day, she came across a giant turtle, holding a planet on it's back. 'Excuse me,' she asked. 'Do you know my purpose?'

The turtle hummed, pausing as if it was thinking long and hard about the question. 'Well,' the turtle said, 'a purpose could be anything. I believe our purpose is to love.' She looked away, disappointed.

'That wasn't the answer I came for.' Then the girl continued on her way. 'Silly girl,' the turtle mumbled, before returning to their walk.

Then, she came across a cat and a dog, passing a star back and forth. 'Excuse me, you two,' she asked. 'Do you know my purpose?'

The cat and dog paused their playing, trying to listen. 'My purpose is to make others happy,' the dog said. 'My purpose is to be curious and find the answers,' the cat said. She looked away, pouting.

'That wasn't the answer I came for.' Then the girl continued on her way. 'Silly girl,' the cat and dog mumbled, before returning to their game.

Eventually, the girl made it to the Moon. 'Moon,' she asked. 'What is my purpose? Why was I created?'

The Moon thought for a long, long time, before responding. 'There is no purpose that we are born with, child,' the Moon said. 'We forge our purpose, out of rock and void and spirit. We carve our own path through life, and it's hard, and it's wonderful because we're alive.'

'You. You are alive.'

She thought about the Moon's words, smiling at long last. 'That was the answer I sought.' The girl then danced along the path. 'Silly girl,' the Moon mumbled with a smile, before drifting into deep sleep.

The girl then gave herself a name.

"Aya".
