Three Hearts (And One for You)

Summary:

Ten years later, Nakamura and Hirose finally take their first international trip to Thailand. Between Nakamura’s selfless over-preparing and Hirose’s desire to be seen, a date at the aquarium brings them together. Ridiculous animal hats and octopus facts lead to a realization: after a decade, their love is still growing.

Notes:

I just finished watching them a while ago and I’m already obsessed! I couldn’t stop thinking about what would happen next for them, so I had to write this immediately.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Ten years of history is a lot of weight to carry in a suitcase, but for Nakamura, it felt as light as air. The decade-long journey from "awkward classmates" to "domestic partners" was a slow-burn evolution that Nakamura still hadn't quite processed, even as he sat on their shared sofa, the blue light of a laptop illuminating Hirose’s focused expression.

This Thailand trip wasn't just a vacation; it was a victory lap.

"We should probably just explore on our own," Hirose murmured, his fingers dancing across the trackpad. "Group tours feel too rushed. I want to be able to stare at a statue for twenty minutes if I feel like it."

"Okay," Nakamura responded instantly, leaning back and watching the way Hirose’s hair tucked behind his ear. "I’ll go wherever you want.”

Hirose paused, his brow furrowing as he turned to look at Nakamura. "We should also add things you want to see, Nakamura! This is our first international trip together. It’s not the 'Hirose World Tour.'"

Hirose loved being pampered. He'd be a liar if he said otherwise but Nakamura’s selflessness was bordering on a medical condition. Over the years, Nakamura had developed a "Hirose-first" filter for every decision, from what to have for dinner to which side of the bed had the better breeze.

"I added the restaurants," Nakamura defended gently, pointing at the screen.

"Those are the restaurants I bookmarked three months ago," Hirose countered with a dry smile. "Add something for you.”

Nakamura chuckled, finally typing in a few spots, though his heart wasn't really in the landmarks. His happiness wasn't a separate entity from Hirose’s; it was an extension of it. If Hirose was smiling at a sunset in Bangkok, Nakamura’s mission was accomplished.

"Let’s make the last day our free day," Hirose suggested, leaning his head on Nakamura’s shoulder. "No itinerary. Just wandering."

Nakamura nodded, breathing in the familiar scent of Hirose’s shampoo, already imagining a day where he could just follow the back of Hirose's head through a crowded market.

The flight was a reflection their entire relationship.

Nakamura had packed a "survival kit" for Hirose: noise-canceling headphones, three different types of snacks (sweet, salty, and 'in-case-you’re-cranky' spicy), and a portable charger.

"Nakamura, it’s only a few hours," Hirose laughed, even as he eagerly tore into a bag of dried mango.

They shared a pair of earbuds to watch a rom-com. Halfway through, Hirose’s head inevitably drooped, landing on Nakamura’s chest. Nakamura froze, barely breathing, his arm going numb but refusing to move. He spent the rest of the flight staring at the flight tracker map, content to be a human pillow for the man who held his entire world in his hands.

When they finally stepped out into the humid, vibrant heat of Bangkok, reality hit. They were finally here.

As they navigated the bustling streets, Hirose kept glancing at Nakamura’s hand, which was currently busy gripping the strap of their shared daypack.

Everywhere they looked, couples were woven together. Tourists held hands, leaning in for quick kisses under the shade of temple trees. Hirose wanted that. He wanted the solid weight of Nakamura’s fingers laced through his.

But Nakamura was being... Nakamura.

He was hyper-aware of his surroundings, playing the role of the vigilant protector. He was constantly checking if Hirose was too hot, if he was hydrated, or if the sidewalk was too crowded. In Nakamura’s head, he was being respectful. He didn't want to overstep or make Hirose feel "weird" in a foreign country, fearing that public displays of affection might make Hirose self-conscious.

*He looks so focused,* Hirose thought, watching Nakamura squint at a street sign. He’s so worried about me being comfortable that he’s forgetting to actually touch me.

The final day arrived. Hirose had kept the destination a secret until they reached the entrance of the massive underground aquarium.

"An aquarium?" Nakamura’s eyes widened, his inner child practically vibrating. "Hirose, this is..."

"I know you love the deep-sea exhibits," Hirose said, nudging him toward the ticket counter. "And since you spent the last six days making sure I didn't get a sunburn, today is for you."

The cool, blue-tinted darkness of the aquarium was an instant balm. They wandered through the glass tunnels, surrounded by the silent, graceful swirl of sharks and rays.

At the gift shop, the "awkwardness" of their youth made a brief, hilarious comeback.

"You have to," Hirose insisted, holding up a plush, oversized octopus hat with dangling tentacles.

"Only if you wear the crab," Nakamura countered, thinking he was safe.

Five minutes later, they were walking toward the main tank, Nakamura looking like a confused cephalopod and Hirose sporting a bright red crab hat that sat precariously on his head.

"We look ridiculous," Nakamura whispered, though he was grinning so wide his cheeks ached.

"We look like tourists," Hirose corrected, snapping a selfie. "And you look like a very handsome octopus."

They reached the final exhibit: the Giant Pacific Octopus. Nakamura stopped dead. He stared at the creature, mesmerized by its rhythmic breathing and the way it camouflaged against the rocks.

"Did you know," Nakamura started, his voice dropping into that specific 'fact-telling' register Hirose knew so well, "that octopuses have three hearts? And their blood is actually blue because it’s copper-based?"

Hirose leaned against the railing, watching Nakamura instead of the tank. He’d heard these facts a thousand times. He’d heard them in high school, he’d heard them during late-night study sessions, and he’d heard them when they moved into their first apartment.

"And they’re incredibly intelligent," Nakamura continued, gesturing enthusiastically, his octopus hat tentacles flopping. "They can solve puzzles and even recognize human faces—"

He stopped when he realized Hirose wasn't looking at the tank at all.

"What?" Nakamura asked, suddenly shy. "I’m rambling again."

"You are," Hirose said softly.

He didn't wait for Nakamura to lead this time. Hirose reached out, his fingers sliding firmly into the gaps between Nakamura’s, lacing them together. The contact was electric, grounding them both in the quiet, blue dimness of the room.

Nakamura looked down at their joined hands, then back at Hirose. The caution he’d been carrying all week melted away. Here, in the belly of the aquarium, with three hearts beating in the tank and two beating in unison outside of it, everything felt right.

Hirose leaned in, pulling Nakamura down by the collar of his shirt for a lingering kiss. It wasn't about the crowd or the location; it was about the ten years it took to get to this specific silence.

"I love you, Nakamura," Hirose whispered against his lips.

Nakamura squeezed his hand, his heart the only one he had, despite the octopus facts feeling like it might burst.

"I love you too, Hirose. Always."

As they walked out towards the exit, still wearing their ridiculous hats and refusing to let go of each other’s hands, Nakamura realized that the best part of the trip wasn't the destination. It was the fact that, after ten years, they were still discovering new ways to fall in love with each other again and again.

Notes:

Thank you so much for reading! I honestly think for his character development and from being mature after 10 years, now that they are dating, Nakamura has become so much more intentional in the way he thinks about Hirose. He’s always so focused on making sure everything he does is comfortable for him.

I have so many more headcanons for these two, so I’ll definitely be writing more for them soon. This was just the start! I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments. See you in the next one!
