Work Text:
Zam opened her dorm door to a familiar sight.
She blinked down at the… aplleyance, was it called?
“That… belongs in a bathroom, does it not? What’s it doing out here?” She goes to glance around, but is interrupted by a strange voice coming from the aplleyance.
“Ooh! Let me in!” It says in a strange voice.
“What— you can talk?” Zam responds, bewildered. “Can all of you talk? Have we been washing our hands in living beings this whole time?”
The aplleyance does not respond, but Zam does hear giggles. Zam gives it a double take. “Are you… laughing at me?”
Just then, Squiddo comes rushing down the hall, in full uniform as usual.
What is less usual is the fact they are clearly bursting into tears of laughter. “Squiddo?”
“Zam! Zam you gotta—“ she hiccuped, “Zam you gotta let that sink in.”
“…The sink? Oh, that’s what it’s called! You won’t believe—“
“No, do you not— do you not get it?” Squiddo asked, clearly confused. Now Zam was confused. Why were they confused?
What.
“Oh! Right!” Squiddo looked like she just remembered something important, “Alien from Mars, you wouldn’t get it.”
She withered at those words. Stupid Zam, always missing something ‘cause you’re different.
Squiddo seemed to notice her upset, “Uh— I can explain the joke if you like?” Zam softened at this.
“Uh— yeah if you… if you would that would be really nice… but I don’t wanna be a bother—“
Squiddo was already barging into her room, waving her off, “No problem, not a bother! I can’t have my jokes wasted on you— I’ll explain this one and next time I’ll figure out one that works!” They grinned at Zam and her heart warmed.
The humans here weren’t so bad.
