Work Text:
It was the quiet space of the kitchen, the one that they had rushed to. Into hiding not able to get into another country, not able to get a flight for where they were going. Clint had offered but Steve had declined, stating to lay low to not cost him anymore harm that had been dealt him: from mind control or otherwise.
Instead, they were housed in a small house close to the airport, somewhere that a family was away in and Wanda had spelled the neighbours into thinking they were house sitters. They were after all, the spell barely needed anything, she just smiled saw the group and said “College people” shaking her head before leaving. The spell was a joke by Scott, or who they began to know him as Antman. At least he said, he would race to the best bedroom, Sam took the coach and Wanda had a nice room. Steve had joked about the bunk beds before they went to Scott and Wanda. Sam was taking the coach and Bucky and Steve would have the one with the two beds.
At least that was the idea, instead they were not in bed like everyone else was. They were in the kitchen, the pastel kitchen. The small music blasting from a CD player, something that Bucky had grabbed. Stashed in that bag he carried with him everywhere.
The familiar trumpets sunk into the room, accompanied by violins. If they squinted enough they could pretend there was no dishwasher in the room.
“Can’t help but dance?” Steve had commented leaning against the window and relaxing as the small tune player
“Only with you, you Punk!” Bucky had shot back, washing up the last remaining cups. In truth, it was the factor that this building had been abandoned, an rented property that could barely get anyone in there. This was the cups there as a house warming gift, the pasta was in Bucky’s bag so they laid low. Tommorow there would be a battle over a jet, they could go there now but night, night would lead to mistakes. So morning would be best, rumour has it that they would make Tony have the policy for it. To have that fight in an airport, the once he knew they were targeting.
Then it was Steve watching from the doorway, arms folded in front of his chest.
“Once again, It’s been a long, long time…” hummed the radio.
“Come on then, like old times.” Steve had leaned out “After you washed that thing? He squinted the last cup”
“Oh do you need glasses now?” Bucky teased but that smile was all he needed to know. To see the world in his eyes.
It was the sound of running water, the last cup being placed on the drainer Bucky drying his hands before turning to extend his hand. He was wearing a red long sleeve top and Steve in a long sleeved blue.
“Funny coincidence” Bucky laughed, all he got in response was a confused face a moment of puzzlement. The pinch of Steve’s brow before he laughed. Placing his oddly soft hands onto Buckys, feeling calloused hands and another snake round his lower back. Same height and yet old habits die young.
Steve only laughed feeling the press of his own hand onto the muscular lower back, as he allowed himself to be spun hearing the tunes playing round them.
“You’ll never know how many dreams l dream about you, Or how empty they all seem without you”
The small twirl before they nestled like they were hunting the warmth. Steve feeling the space between them weaken, the string connecting them grown thin and stronger in its elastic. Pressed so close, they could feel one another’s body heat as they twirled.
“It’s been a long, long time.”
The song flooded into his mind, its orchestral filtering modernity out of the room and festering within to bring a bright smile on his face. A smile that he was sure Bucky was marching see it reflected on one of the kitchen mirrors, his face under his neck.
It was as the song began to slow the familiar beat pressing to a small filter. The distance from them, only inches away. Steve felt his arms want to wrap Bucky to be under his chin again, to hold him close and whisper to him his best friend was safe in his arms.
Then it was the brush of a hand at Steve’s jaw, the more confident hand, brushing at Steve’s face where some cuts were nestled there. The pout of concentration upon Bucky’s face, a splash of something in his eyes that had Steve’s smile falter and crumble.
The flash of pain in his eyes, brushing away the stars to make space for clouds, clouds heavy with darkening blue. Then it was soft hands smoothing out around stubble, brushing long hair back. The snap of electric eyes finally meeting, not casted onto the floor or dashing to look away.
How gravity seemed to work on them. No there own gravity, strong and prominent as it brushed away the world around them.
The gripping of Buck’s hand on his arm, the way that it only twisted. There lips inches from one another, the melt of honey onto their minds, sweet and so natural. How Steve slid his hand only a few inches until it was creeping into Bucky’s hair.
It was the jump of the CD, how it tangled back to the lyrics, singing sweet and soft -“So, kiss me once, then kiss me twice. Then kiss me once again.”
Eyes slowly closing not before looking at one another. Pupils blown. But not from anything of great worry no concussion or numbing agent. Pure amazing love sealed in a beautiful diamond kiss.
One they had been wishing for, after their dances like this in the kitchen, before that war. Before the fall, before the winter solider, before the serum, before the-
“Oh god Sorry!” Scott yelled, making his way to scramble for his face, Wanda was frozen her mouth open, her arm still frozen as she had just been talking.
Sam “Oh so this is why we are fighting the world” the for you two was unheard, but it was loud from the people at the door.
“Sleep.” Steve seemed to say “We should sleep”
His eyes were not locked on those with fond looks at the door, it was on Bucky. A small smile graced his face, the small smirk, that usual manner of his voice “Sure Stevie” he commented, smoothing his hand down the man’s shoulder like brushing off dust before turning to the door.
“Excuse me” he muttered the usual edge to his voice that Steve had remembered was almost gone, stringing to the edges of his words was a small chucked.
Then it was the other’s slightly frozen, Wanda with a hand over her mouth laughing, Scott a tomato muttering out “Good for you!”
Sam was the one, the only one no longer at the door frame staring as Steve and Bucky moved to go to their room “No, well yes…” he went quiet for a second watching as Steve seemed to stare him with a small smile, the one he had when muttering that line on those runs. “I support you both but l don’t want to hear you both please” he gestured to the other room behind theirs, the coach in perfect view. “please”
“Ok” Steve smiled, slipping back into the room, the sound of the door shutting and something like a back hitting the wall.
It was the scoff the turning to have the kitchen, the kitchen that just after the archway had no door but enough distance from that.
“Fighting for those idiots” Sam scoffed, chucking lightly under his breath. Scott offered him a small smile still as red as a tomato.
“It’s bigger than that, l know but seriously how will the other people not notice tomorrow, l knew from that moment Sharon kissed him”
“Wait Steve kissed someone else”
Scott exclaimed.
Wanda knew he was a romantic.
“…well kind of, it looked like it was one sided, like he was kissing her but not for himself, more her feelings”
Wanda only sighed as they left to go into the corridor, “idiots” she muttered, finding both Sam and Scott attending to the bunk beds. She took the coach, happy and of course her usual ear muffs. She usually slept with them in but it was comforting to know she would not hear anything, if anything happened. She was certain most would be well rested for the battle in sleep: for the body, mind and most importantly the heart and soul. The two hearts and souls bearing as one in the room so close to hers, she sighed, turning to sleep a version name on her mind, at least she could see him tomorrow.
THE END!
