Chapter 1: A Crocodile Out Of Water

Chapter Text

Sebek woke up in a box…

He felt around for where he was as the crawling claws of panic made its way up his throat. He felt the soft velvet cushion against his hand and the silky texture of the ceremonial robes and calmed, if only slightly. He was at Night Raven College, with master Malleus, Lilia and Silver, he was safe.

Sebek felt the coffin he was in start to shake before he heard the sound of a key turning. He closed his eyes as a bright light washed over them.

Once Sebek felt the light dim he opened his eyes to the opulent hall, it was vast with decorative lanterns and marvellous carvings. Sebek left the safety of the coffin as who he assumed to be the Headmage bustled down to the next coffin.

“Over here,” Sebek heard Lilia say as he guided Sebek over to the other first years.

Sebek followed Lilia and watched as the Headmage opened the other coffins. “What’s with that open coffin?” Sebek heard a student ask

“I know right. Its cover in scorch marks, I wonder if the Headmage will see it.” Another student replied.

“Now who!” Sebek heard the Headmage exclaim once he reached the coffin.

Sebek watched as another professor walked over to the Headmage. Sebek could only hear bits and pieces of the conversation before the Headmage left the room.

“Good evening new pups. I’m Professor Crewel, due to unforeseen circumstances I will be the one to conduct your sorting’s. Not to worry, I’m more than qualified.” Sebek heard the man, Professor Crewel, say before he began calling students to the stand.

Sebek zones out until he was called to stand before the Mirror. “Tell the Mirror your name, loud and clear.” Professor Crewel muttered to Sebek.

“Sebek Zigvolt.” Sebek spoke with as clear of a voice he could gather, although even he winced with the volume.

There was a quick moment of silence before,

“The shape of thy soul is… Diasmonia.”

The mirror of darkness proclaimed before falling silent once more. Sebek felt a smile grace his mouth as he was placed into the same dorm as Master Malleus.

As he moved towards the other Diasmonia first years the grand doors leading to the sorting hall burst open. The Headage appeared with the wayward student and… a cat? In his arms, “I have caught our wayward student! And no! I don’t suffer with stomach pain Mister Kalim!” The Headmage shout out at once as he dragged the student to the Mirror of Darkness.

As the student was placed before the Mirror Sebek heard the student and Headmage whisper to each other before, “This soul is soundless, colourless, shapeless and is utterly vacant.” Sebek heard the Mirror proclaim.

A shocked murmur ran throughout the students. The creature in the Headmages arms broke free “Myrah! If the stupid human cant use magic than make me a student! I’m gonna be the greatest mage there is!” The monster screamed before it puffed its chest and blew a fireball that headed straight towards Sebek.

Before Sebek could think to dodge he was dragged out of the way, as he looked up he saw Silver. “What were you doing,” Silver shouted, “standing around like that. You could have gotten burnt!”

Sebek heard Silver continue to fret and lecture him as he looked around the hall, watching what he now assumed to be a dire beast run amuck. Sebek heard Silver sigh as he was dragged over to a corner that wasn’t in flames. “Just, we’ll stay hear until that beast is caught alright.” Silver said to Sebek, Sebek could feel the warmth radiating from Silver has he kept Sebek close to his side.

Sebek nodded in recognition as he continued to watch the dire beast ruin the great hall, ‘I wonder where Malleus and Lilia are,’ Sebek wondered as the beast was finally caught.
