i’d slit my own throat just to see if you’d mourn me

Summary:

“Ah… are you the new Maester?”

Truthless Recluse blinks, slow and hollow. For a fleeting second, confusion ripples across his otherwise blank expression. A dream, he decides—too quick. Then he looks up. And the thought dies where it stands. Because the face before him is one he knows in a way that curdles—impossible, untouched by everything that should have ruined it. The sight of it alone clogs his throat, words refusing to form, his useless fat tongue left limp in his mouth as if even it has given up.

…He really, /truly/ does not want to be here.

It’s only when he bites down hard on his own dry tongue, pain sharp and grounding, that something colder settles in. This isn’t a dream. Somehow, impossibly, Truthless Recluse has been dragged backwards—into a time before ruin took root, when the Beasts were still Virtues, when the world stood at its most sacred and unspoiled… and when he still existed as something whole. And now the Virtue of Knowledge is looking at him with such eyes...

…Witches.

He feels sick.

Chapter Text

“You will listen.”

“This is not a request. It is the shape your path takes.”

“A story, then—so you remember what you are being placed inside.”

“A Maester and his King.”

“They loved each other.”

“Carefully—like glass carried in both hands.”

“A devotion that learned its own limits, and still chose to grow.”

“Something rare. Something that should have been left alone.”

“But fate does not leave things alone.”

“It lifted its cleaver clean.”

“And it cut.”

“Time did the rest.”

“Arrogance settled in where wonder used to live.”

“Eons stretched thin, until even eternity felt stale in the mouth.”

“The Maester watched.”

“The King forgot how to be small.”

“And on a New Year’s night, when the world pretended to begin again—”

“—the Maester’s knife found the King’s heart.”

“As if it had always belonged there.”

“. . .”

“You know this story.”

“You have lived the echo of it.”

“You have worn both hands that held the blade.”

“And still, you do not understand it.”

“So listen again.”

“Listen properly.”

“Wake up, Pure Vanilla.”

“Your virtue is waiting for you.”
