RE: TO DIRECTOR HUGHES

Summary:

Glenn was a man of logic.

What they saw did not conform to logic.

Notes:

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

"I don't think I've seen Williams that maniacal before,"

Glenn picked at the slice of potato on the plate with his fork, idly, just something for his hands to do.

"It's ehm... a bit jarring."

His eyes trailed upward from the shoddy piece of food to Joan.

"Well... can you fault him?"

She spoke, voice lightly tinged with a humorous tone, her own gaze directed towards an ecstatic Williams.

"...No. No, I don't think I can."

"Hey, that reminds me,"

She shifted in her seat, glancing his way.

"Don't you have that report letter to write?"

"Oh, yeah, that one to Assistant Director Ruprecht... Argh. I'll get on it, I totally forget. Thanks for reminding me."

Glenn stood up, grabbing his tray.

"See you around."

"Mhm."

To Assistant Director Ruprecht Myecroft:

Our research & archaeology endeavors into the Starling Sector have turned up a myriad of anomalous results, most interesting of which however is the "Doorway". This "Doorway" is a ~2 meter tall, ~1 meter wide arch of polished marble.

It immediately stands out from the location in which we excavated it from, simply being dirt in which it was buried in.

While, at first, appearing to be nothing more than an unusually placed and created work of "art", as we were investigating the base of this arch, Junior Researcher Edward, out of boredom, threw a rock through the Doorway. Subsequently, the rock seemed to collide against nothing, right before our very eyes.

Fascinated, Head Researcher Williams immediately repeated the unintentional experiment, throwing another rock at the Doorway, with it seemingly colliding against mere air.

At last, Williams decided to attempt to press his hand against the "invisible wall", and reported that he felt "solid, compacted dirt". At once, Williams took out his pickaxe, and mined at the "invisible wall". Immediately after, what appeared to be dirt and rock seemed to materialize out of thin air, falling to the floor.

As a man of the scientific method, a follower of logic, and a nonbeliever of folktales, it is of my, and of Research Team Spring's, conclusion that this Doorway simply defies reality and logic. It quite literally appears to be some sort of Doorway into another place, of which the whereabouts are undetermined. As of this letter, Williams is already requisitioning extra heavy duty digging equipment.

Ruprecht, I am aware that I am simply the Assistant Head, but I must include my personal thoughts on this matter.

What we are dealing with is something impossible, obviously enough. But Williams and most of my fellow researchers are too blinded by their own gleeful curiosity to think of any potential repurcussions. I am asking of you to send additional security detail.

My paranoia, however unbecoming, is warranted in such a case, I believe. With the grand total of the three guards we have for our eleven man research team, not to mention that only one of them has seen actual combat, if something... maliciously minded were to be encountered, our safety would be at severe risk. Veterans would be preferred, with better weaponry than service revolvers.

If you are still unswayed by my worries of the supernatural, do think of the realistic threats, such as bandits. We are on the outskirts of the conflict. The closest Nation or Empire base is hours out, and the closest Solace Outpost is still more than thirty minutes.

That is all I have to impart you with.

-Assistant Head Researcher Glenn Kamiński

Notes:

soooooo I finally got around to writing this cuz I just couldn't stomach how bad the first version was

More chapters will be added when I get off my lazy ass
