A Furry Friend

Summary:

Hornet just wants to find a place to sit, fall asleep, and never wake up again. Her siblings have other ideas.

Notes:

Hello folks :D

My very first Ao3 post! For some context, My English teacher had our class write a short story based on the Lotus Eaters during our Odyssey unit. He gave us pretty much complete freedom with it which was totally awesome. My friend wrote his about the dog Pibble (I don’t even know man) and obviously I wrote mine based on Silksong :D

This was a while ago when I was deep into my Hollow Knight phase, so I don’t remember too much of it or anything but I wanted to post it here anyway :) enjoy :D

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Weak, tired, and very annoyed, Hornet trudged through the Citadel with her siblings, Hollow and Ghost, dragging their feet behind her, ogling at the same structures that they had already passed by at least five times.

“Where is that damn bench?” She growled. “I’m all out of tools and I do not want to be jumpscared by a group of enemies.”

“Ghost keeps getting distracted,” Hollow responded. “Hollownest is a lot more desolate than Pharloom. They haven’t seen structures like these before.”

“I think you need to get your facts straight,” Hornet snapped. “You’ve been just as distracted.” How was he this irresponsible? He was the oldest of the three of them, in Wyrm’s name! Although, thinking about it, she couldn’t really blame them for getting distracted. Their journey had been long and weary, and they’d only just arrived at their destination. They still had to find answers about why she had been kidnapped by those strange bugs for her silk.

“I wonder how Sherma is faring,” Hollow pondered. “These lands aren’t quite as holy as they were described.”

“I don’t need another thing to think about. Trying to find a safe place to rest is our focus now,” Hornet replied, staring down at her map for about the 100th time, trying very hard not to think of poor Sherma. Where hadn’t they looked? She needed to update her map.

“Any bright ideas, you two?” Hornet said with a sigh, turning back to her siblings. Except, her siblings weren’t there. She was just about ready to throw herself off of Blasted Steps. Sure, they were all tired, but how did they literally disappear into thin air? That is most definitely not an issue of being worn out.

“What if I just left them?” she huffed, but started trying to listen for them anyway. Wherever her siblings went, chaos was sure to follow. Sure enough, after a few seconds, she heard the sounds of battle. Following the sounds, she quickly found the two of them and a couple of Citadel guards.

“First question. How and why,” Hornet said, pulling out her needle and jumping into battle next to Hollow.

“Ghost heard a flea,” Hollow replied, swiping a guard in half with his nail. Sure enough, little Ghost was bashing around their own tiny nail with a little fluffy flea whimpering atop their head. “I didn’t want to leave them alone.”

“You could’ve at least said something to me,” Hornet grumbled, and Hollow just shrugged.

“You know Ghost. They don’t stop for anybody,” he said, which was annoyingly true.

“Ghost!” Hornet called. They snapped their head towards her, the flea bopping on their mask. “Watch out!” she yelled, and hoping they understood, fired a silk spear towards one of the guards. Thankfully, they jumped out of the way, clutching the flea, and started attacking another guard.

Turning to Hollow, she could see he was having difficulty dealing with the high flying enemies. He may have been big and tall, but he wasn’t fast enough to hit them.

“Give me a boost, would you?” Hornet asked, and he obliged, throwing her up into the air. Hornet dug her needle into the first flying enemy, bouncing off of it as it fell from the sky. Then, turning to the second guard, she fired off another silk spear, finishing off the onslaught.

Gracefully, she landed on the ground, cleaning her needle before tucking it away. Turning towards Hollow, she saw him pulling his nail out of a dead guard, also cleaning it on his cloak before tucking it onto his back. Ghost bounced up to the two of them, clutching the flea in between their little arms, their nail still dirty.

“Ghost, you can’t just put your weapon away without cleaning it,” Hornet sighed with exasperation. Ghost didn’t seem to care, though, simply holding up the fluffy flea, continuing to bounce on his little feet.

“Awoo!” yipped the flea happily.

“Stop trying to use my love for fluffy creatures to persuade me into forgetting what you two did. Also, release the poor thing,” Hornet said. Reluctantly, Ghost released the little flea.

“You two must stop getting distracted. I know it’s hard, especially for you, Ghost, wandering wherever you please, but it’s dangerous here. We need to rest and we need to recollect ourselves. And, to do that, we need to find a bench.” Her two siblings stared at her guilty. Actually, only Hollow stared at her with real guilt. He never liked to displease people. Ghost, on the other hand, most definitely did not regret a thing.

“I promise I’ll stay focused," Hollow said, and Hornet gave him an appreciative look.

“Now, to deal with Ghost,” she said.

“I can carry Ghost so they stop getting into trouble,” Hollow said, and Ghost snapped their head towards him with a murderous glint in their eyes.

“I won’t give you any more candy if you wander off into trouble again,” Hornet warned Ghost. With that said, Ghost immediately climbed up onto Hollow’s head, glaring at Hornet for threatening to take away their precious sugar.

“Alright. Now with that settled, can we please find the bench?” She asked. And with that, the siblings went on their way.
