Poaching of all kinds

1.

Earth Fighter landed in a forest clearing. Inside, Fred and Kara rechecked their equipment, as did other 4 BPP operatives in the main room. One Spix Macaw that was going with them mimicked it by checking his feathers.
-Alright, everyone, remember our priorities - Kara said. - Priority one is to recover his mate that these poachers are holding for an “exclusive” sale. Priority two is to arrest those involved. If his mate dies, this mission is a failure, no matter what happens next. Do you understand?
-Yes, captain - everyone said.
-Let’s go - Kara said and 6 humans and 1 Spix Macaw left the fighter. They quickly drew their weapons and looked around.
-Clear - someone said.
-For now - Kara said. - Proceed, standard jungle formation. If you have to fire, use stun setting. Let’s move!
They proceeded to move into the jungle. The Spix Macaw was perching on Fred’s shoulder. The bird was very impatient and anxious.
-I know that you miss your mate - Fred said. - Just a little longer, ok? We have to get there on foot, as these poachers have a scattering field that blocks transporters…
-Against us? - the bird asked.
-I don’t think so - Fred said. - I think their primary concern is competition. Other poachers.
-Why did my mate become a commodity to be traded and stolen? - the bird said. - By what right…?
-By none, and we are here to enforce this - Kara said. - And cut the chatter, you two.
Soon, they reached a wire fence that was surrounding the poacher’s hideout.
-Activate jump rockets - Kara said and they all jumped above the fence. They proceeded toward the building.
A guard soon saw them, but Fred stunned him before he could do anything. They broke into the building and stunned everyone who stood in their way until they reached the main room, where poachers were having a good time “taming” their captive Spix Macaw.
-This is the BPP - Kara said as all operatives raised their weapons. - You are under arrest for poaching endangered species and animal cruelty. Put your hands over your heads. Now!
Shocked, the poachers did as Kara said.
-Good - Kara said. - Now, step away from the table. Slowly.
The poachers did that.
-Fred, you turn - Kara said. Fred approached the table and opened the cage. The female Spix Macaw inside slowly got out of the cage. When she saw her mate, she quickly flew to him and nuzzled into him. Both birds touched their beaks.
-What a touching reunion - one of the other BPP operatives said.
-What is it that you are touched about? - one of the poachers said. - They're just stupid birds!
-They feel like we do - Fred said. - And how would you feel if someone took your wife just because he can? Or any other human man had his wife ripped off from him like that?
-It is different with humans - the poacher said.
Fred sighted. Some people just could not be argued with.
At this moment, Kara’s communicator beeped. Kara took it and a small hologram of director James Turner appeared before her.
-What’s your status, captain Kara Dune? - he said.
-We’re finishing here, director - Kara said. - We have the bird and the poachers secured.
-Excellent, because I need you here at Beckfoot as soon as possible. Finish your operation and get here.
-Yes, director - Kara said. - Alright, people, let’s not waste time. Move it!

A few hours later, the same Earth Fighter touched dawn on the Backfoot lawn. This time, only Fred and Kara disembarked from it and it soon took off.
Kara and Fred went to the Beckfoot’s basement, where the current BPP HQ was located. Director Turner and a few other agents were there.
-We are here as you ordered, director - Kara said.
-At ease - Turner said.
-Why are we here, director? - Fred said.
-We’II get to it - Turner said. - Two days ago, the wormhole went active…
-What? - Fred said. - It’s been dormant for years now…
-Yet it happened - Turner said. - Our sensors managed to register what was on the other side of the wormhole before it closed. Here it is…
He moved them to a nearby screen.
-I see human lifesigns - Fred said. - And an indicator of another universe… What’s unusual here?
-That’s only the start of it - Turner said. - Take a look at these readings…
-Wormholes? - Fred said.
-Artificial, stable wormholes - Turner said. - Whoever is here, they can do it. I don’t have to tell you how advantageous having such a capacity would be for us.
-But if the wormhole has closed itself, how can we get to that universe? - Kara said.
-I know the exact number of that universe - Turner said. - And I have an Earth Fighter here with a multidimensional drive installed. We can get there. But I want you two with me, as you are some of my best people, best people that I can spare right now.
-Why not your niece and her friends? - Fred said.
-They are… now available - Turner said. - Most of them are still grieving… and Roger Walker is on his honeymoon. You’II have to do.
-Very well - Kara said. - Let’s go.
They went to a small pond where the Earth Fighter was landed. They got aboard and found the pilot and 3 other BPP operatives already aboard. They quickly took off and soon reached Earth’s orbit.
-What coordinates should I input? - the pilot said.
-Set for SG-100 - Turner said.
-Setting for SG-100 - the pilot said. - Hold on…
The fighter shook as it dematerialized, leaving this universe.

Soon, it materialized in another universe.
-Are we in the right place? - Fred asked
-Approximately - the pilot said. - Right universe, just a few star systems over.
-Well, I’d consider that a success - Turner said. - Set course for Earth.
-Director, I’ve got a ship incoming - the pilot said. - Lifesigns are pretty similar to humans… In fact, some are human.
-Open a channel - Turner said. - Human vessel, this is director James Turner of the BPP. We’d like to ask you for…
He couldn’t finish it as something hit the Earth Fighter.
-I doubt they are interested in talking - Fred said.
-We’ve been hit, no damage occurred - the pilot said.
-Get us out of here - Turner said. A moment later, the Earth Fighter jumped into hyperspace.
They exited hyperspace near Earth pretty soon.
-Director, wormhole readings seem to be concentrated beneath one mountain in North America - the pilot said. - Cheyenne Mountain.
-Take us there - Turner said. - Carefully. The Earth Fighter began its descent toward this alternate Earth. Its shields were activated, just in case anyone would show any hostility.
As they approached the mountain, they spotted a landing field and touched down there.
Nearly immediately, soldiers started scrambling to surround the Earth Fighter.
-It’s a military base - Fred said. - Should I put the shields back up?
-No, they seem to be only armed with kinetic weapons - Turner said. - And I want it to go peacefully. Activate exterior speakers.
-Speakers on - the pilot said.
-This is director James Turner of the Brazilian Protection Police - Turner said. - We are humans from another universe. We came here to talk. Can you get us to your commanding officer?
The soldiers spoke among themselves for a moment.
-This is Colonel Jack O’Neill - they heard someone outside saying. - You may come out and I will take you to general Hammond. Come out unarmed or you will be shot.
-Very well - Turner said. - Fred, Kara, you’re with me. Rest of you, stay here and do not do anything stupid.
Turner, Fred and Kara disarmed themselves and disembarked from the Earth Fighter.
They were immediately surrounded by soldiers. The man who introduced himself as Colonel Jack O’Neill led them into the mountain, to the military base that was here.

After a long walk, they reached a room where a man of about the same age and similar mannerisms as Turner was standing.
-General Hammond - Jack said to him. - Here are those who just landed on the airfield. They want to talk to you.
-General, I am director Turner and we have detected some interesting energy readings here - Turner said. - Readings that may indicate something that would be very advantageous to the BPP. We are willing to share some of our data…
-I think we should discuss it between the two of us, director Turner - Hammond said.
-Very well - Turner said.
-Colonel, take these two somewhere not too important - Hammond said. - Maybe to Dr Jackson's office.
-Come with me - Jack said.
He led them through the base to another room, where a man with glasses was sitting behind a desk.
-Daniel, keep an eye on them and keep their attention - Jack said to him. - They are our… guests and their commander is now talking with General Hammond.
-Of course - Daniel said and started talking to them about things they could barely understand.
Fred took a look at the desk. It was mostly filled by some papers and a few artifacts (or replicas, he couldn’t be sure) but he noticed something else there. It was a picture of a young woman with long, dark hair and golden skin. Daniel noticed that he was looking at the picture and stopped talking. Kara also looked there.
-Who is she? - Kara said.
-She was…. Is… my wife - Daniel said with sadness and a bit of anger in his voice.
-What happened to her? - Fred said.
-They took her, like a… thing - Daniel said with cold fury.
-Who? - Fred said.
-Goa’ulds, of course - Daniel said. - Apophis wanted a new host for his… queen, Amanuet. So they came… I wasn’t living on Earth then. I wasn’t there when they came… But I know they have chosen her, because of her beauty… They liked it, and so they took her. Took her as host, just… possessed her because they wanted. She cannot do anything herself now. And they took her away from me, ripped her away… They didn’t care that she was… is my wife. They think that their desires are more important than our bond, our love for each other! Just because they wanted a pretty thing… Like she is a thing, not a person, an individual… who loves me, and whom I love more than anything else.
Everyone went silent for a moment.
-Damn, doesn’t that sound awfully familiar? - Fred finally said.

-Did you also lose someone to the Goa’uld? - Daniel said.
-Not the Goa’uld, and we didn’t lose anything - Kara said. - But preventing such things, and saving those taken like that is, in fact, our job. So far, we were only doing it for birds…
-Birds? - Daniel said. - How can that compare?
-Macaws - Fred said. - Where we live, they feel… as strongly as we do. I heard desperation in Spix Macaw’s voice when poachers took his mate… Because she was pretty, they wanted it and they could. It was the same desperation I’ve just heard in your voice. Species are different, but the principle, and the damage… are not.
-These Goa’uld are exactly like these poachers we regularly hunt - Kara said.

And, as fighting such poaching is our job, I feel that it is our duty to help you get your wife back, and punish those who took her away from you. It really is no different to what we do at work normally.
-Well, good luck with that - Daniel said. - I have been searching for her for over a year… I only met her once, and lost her again. I don’t even know where she can be!
-Our ship’s sensors are very advanced - Fred said. - Maybe we could track her down…
-There’s no reason not to try - Daniel said. - Really, I would do anything to get my wife back. But, even if we have her psychically, we would still have to remove that snake from her head.
-Our medical technology is advanced too - Fred said.
-Very well - Daniel said. - I just have to not get my hopes up… In case it fails.
At this moment, director Turner walked into the room.
-How are talks going, director? - Fred said.
-Hard - Turner said. - It’s not really their technology, what we’ve detected, and we are now negotiating what could be shared…
-Director, I think we have a mission to do here - Fred said.
-What? - Turner said.
Kara and Fred explained everything to Turner.
-Well, it does seem to fit our job description - Turner said when they finished. - Although I never thought I would have to fight poachers that poach humans. Animals and even aliens, I’ve seen, but not humans. Nevertheless, it is our duty as the BPP to stop this poaching and reunite those ripped away from each other because of this poaching. We’II do it.

-Very well - Turner said. - We’II meet near our ship.

They went back to their Earth Fighter, where they met up with Jack, Daniel, a black man Jack introduced as Teal’c and a bright - haired woman Jack introduced as Samatha Carter.
They got aboard the Earth Fighter.
-So, how are you going to find my wife? - Daniel said once they were all aboard.
-I need to have something to look for - the ship’s pilot said. - Something distinct enough to lock sensors onto.
-Isn’t my picture of her enough? - Daniel said.
-I need more - the pilot said. - Something unique…
-Well, she was… pregnant while being a host - Daniel said. - But I don’t know…
-Thanks, that should be enough… - the pilot said and turned toward the console.
-Do you have anything? - Daniel said impatiently after a few minutes.
-I think so… - the pilot said. - Strange… It appears that she was aboard that ship that attacked us when we arrived in this universe.
-It’s Abydos - Daniel said. - My wife’s homeworld.
-I can track this ship… - the pilot said. - At least partially… It left Abydos on this course and did not deviate from it, even as it left the sensor range. I am estimating its further course…
The course was traced to another star system.
-It’s the Chulak system - Jack said.
-It is deep in Aphosis’ territory - Sam said. - Are we going to fight our way there with this one ship?
-You have not seen what this Earth Fighter is capable of - Turner said. - Take us up.
The Earth Fighter took off and headed away from Earth.
-Setting course for that system - the pilot said. - Engaging hyperdrive…
The Earth Fighter entered hyperspace.
-They are going to detect our approach - Daniel said.
-No - Turner said. - Engage cloak.
-Engaging cloak - the pilot said.
The bright view of hyperspace on the main screen became slightly dimmer.
-We are now invisible to the naked eye and most sensors - Turner said. - Unless they know what to look for and how, which I doubt, they’II not detect us.
-Especially since they’ve only met us once so far - Fred said.
-The Goa’uld are not very good at adapting - Sam said.
-Then it will make our work all the more easy - Kara said.

The Earth Fighter exited hyperspace far away from the planet Chulak.
-I am reading the enemy ships ahead, in orbit of the planet - the pilot said. - The target is aboard.
-The target? - Daniel said. - It’s my wife you are talking about!
-Why are humans more difficult than Macaws? - Fred aid.
-Calm down, all of you - Turner said. - It’s just a designation we use in our operation language. Take us into transporter range to that ship.
The Earth Fighter slowly closed on the Goa’uld ship.
-We are within transporter range now - the pilot said after a while. - However, I cannot get a transporter lock on the target. There is a scattering field in the place of the ship where she is.
-Of course - Fred said. - It would be too easy… Things can never be too easy.
-We’II have to go there and disable that scattering field - Turner said. - And secure the target. Colonel, will you lead the group to find the target? I will lead the group to disable the scattering field.
-Very well - Jack said. - But you’II have to take Sam and Teal’c with you. You are not familiar with Goa’uld ships.
-I will - Turner said.
Eventually, Turner’s group was composed of him, Sam, Teal’c and the three other BPP operatives. Jack’s group was composed of him, Daniel, Fred and Kara.
-Remember, this is a rescue operation - Turner said. - Proceed as normal in such operations. Set your weapons to stun. If the target dies, this mission is a failure.
Everyone acknowledged it. Both groups then beamed to the Goa’uld ship.
They materialized in an empty corridor.
-There is no one here - one of the BPP operatives said.
-They think they are safe - Sam said. - And they have every reason to.
The two groups split up. Thanks to data from the Earth Fighter, Fred and Kara could track the target’s location and so, carefully, they moved toward her. They managed to evade all enemies on their way.
Ammonet was in her… chamber, with a few servants. Daniel and Jack split up from Fred and Kara, prepared their weapons and went in.
-Do not move - Daniel said once they went in. - Do not call anyone.
-That’s a surprise - Ammonet in Sha’re’s body said. - It’s brave, but foolish. You managed to get here undetected, but you will not get away now!
-I am leaving, and you are going with me - Daniel said.
-Your wife is gone, human - Ammonet said. - I am all that remains.
-You’re lying - Daniel said.
-It’s irrelevant - Ammonet said. - You will not fire. You will not hurt me…
At this moment, she was stunned by a shot from behind her. It was Kara and Fred who did it. After that, they did short work of her servants.
-Why didn’t you just stun her? - Kara said as she went to pick up Sha’re.
-Fred to Turner, we have the target - Fred said to his communicator.
-Excellent - Turner said. - We are disabling the field generator… now. Earth Fighter, beam us out.
They beamed back to the Earth Fighter, taking Ammunet in Sha’re’s body with them.
-Now what? - Daniel said. - She is still not fully free.
-Wait a moment - Turner said. - Pilot, get us out of here.
The Earth Fighter flew away from the Goa’uld ship and soon jumped into hyperspace.

-Now, get that snake out of my wife! - Daniel said.
-Lay her down here - Turner said. - Fred, take the transporter.
Fred went to the transporter controls.
-Don’t let her move - Turner said. - Fred, do you detect this…
-Goa’uld is like a snake - Daniel said. - It is in her head…
-I’ve got it - Fred said.
-Get exact lock on it, on molecular level - Turner said. - Careful…
-I’ve got it - Fred said.
-Beam it out - Turner said. - Kara, monitor her life signs.
Everyone heard a low hum as the Goa’uld parasite dematerialized from Sha’re’s head.
-I’ve got it in the transporter buffer - Fred said.
-Hold it there for now - Turner said. - How is Sha’re?
-Weak, but I am not detecting any bleeding… - Kara said. - Wait, there is a small rupture in the upper spine, where the parasite was… I am injecting her with regenerative fluid…
-Will she be alright? - Daniel said.
-Rupture has been sealed - Kara said. - She is stable. But I doubt she will be “alright” after what she went through.
Daniel went silent for a moment.
-You’re right - he finally said. - But I will be there for her.
Sha’re stayed unconscious for most of their trip back to Earth. They opened her eyes about the time they entered the Solar System. First thing she saw was her husband near her.
-Dan’iel? - she said. - Where are we?
-We’re… aboard a ship going back to Earth - Daniel said. - We have… visitors and they helped us find you and rescue you. Ammonet is gone from you.
-I can feel it… - Sha’re said. - But… I remember what I did… what she did. Dan’iel…
-Yes, Sha’re? - Daniel said.
-Hold me, please - Sha’re said.
Daniel embraced her and she nuzzled into him.
-It’s always nice to see when our missions end like this - Fred said.
-Yes - Kara said. - But it’s even nicer when it’s our own species that we save.
-It sure is - Fred said as he looked at Daniel and Sha’re rest in each other’s arms.

Daniel and Sha’re went to the infirmary as soon as they landed again. Turner went to talk with General Hammond and they decided that they’II give turner some data and he’II leave for now, but they’II keep in touch.
Before leaving, Fred sent Ammonet to the containment room in the base.
-So, are we going to go home now? - one of the BPP operatives said when they all were aboard their Earth Fighter, and no one from this universe was aboard.
-Yes - Turner said. - Take us up.
The Earth Fighter took off. It soon cleared the atmosphere.
-Set course for home - Turner said. - SH-002. Engage the multidimensional drive.
-Engaging - the pilot said. The Earth Fighter dematerialized, leaving this universe.
It materialized near Mars.
-It gets better - the pilot said. - This time, it put us in the same star system.
-Take us home - Turner said.
The Earth Fighter headed toward Earth, a safe sleepy green blue planet in a distant corner of the galaxy.
