Work Text:
It came around that time in the year like it always does for highschoolers, a dance. This was the highlight of every high school year, so it had to be good, and this was the time for everyone to ask their date out to the dance. Notes being passed around and will you go to the dance with me signs everywhere.
The sun was shining through the windows in the classroom, Okuyasu sat next to the window like any smart person would and Josuke sat behind him, they were both zoned out, Okuyasu thinking about what he’s going to eat when he gets home, and Josuke doodling on his paper, when actually they both were supposed to be paying attention. It was coming to an end of the school year and everyone was so excited, and very very impatient, the teachers had had enough of these students. But before the students could be released for the day, the teacher had to hand out papers.
“Attention class! I know you all are excited for school to get out, but there is just one important, well to you guys, thing happening that happens at the end of every year. Okuyasu! Will be handing out the papers.” The teacher exclaimed.
Okuyasu was still dozing off, looking out the window at who knows what, but Josuke wasn’t.
Josuke touched Okuyasu’s shoulder, “Hey, dude, that’s you, go pass out the papers.” He whispered loudly.
Okuyasu sat straight up in his seat and got up quickly, walking over to the teacher. The teacher handed Okuyasu the papers, glaring at him. The teacher didn’t really like Okuyasu, not because he was a bad kid or anything, but he didn’t get good grades in this class, on top of that, Keicho kind of left a big impression of the Nijimura family, when Keicho was still in school, all the teachers hated him because of his bad grades and somewhat lack of respect.
Okuyasu stared down at the papers, hm a dance? Oh right we have one every year, eh whatever I don’t usually have anyone to go with so, I guess if Josuke is going with a hot chick then I’ll just be third wheelin’. He thought. Okuyasu never got hit on, like at all in this school like his best bro Josuke did, but he couldn’t complain because he had to admit Josuke was shockingly pretty. But Okuyasu found it weird that Josuke always turned down all the girls that confessed, he wondered why, does he have someone else in mind?
After Okuyasu finished handing out the papers he handed the teacher the extra and smiled at her, trying to get on her good side, but it never worked. He tried too hard, and for what, the teacher won’t ever like him unless he got his grades up, which will never happen so, he kind of gave up trying to be the teachers favorite, it’s not like Josuke was her favorite either, but he does get good grades in this class.
Okuyasu sat back down in his chair.
“Hey, dude, you going to this?” Josuke laughingly asked.
Okuyasu turned around and raised his brow, “Are you?”
“Of course I am bro.”
“So am I then.”
They both shared a smile, not too long, not too short, and it was calming, almost relieving. The bell rang, and everyone eagerly got out of their seats and out of the classroom to gossip with their friends who they want to take out to the dance, which half of them probably will ask Josuke out.
Okuyasu and Josuke were never in a rush, they always took their time, well, they always got caught off guard talking about stupid things, and Josuke always had to answer Okuyasu’s dumbass questions.
On their walk back home together they were talking about if you turn a building upside down than the ceiling is basically the floor and the floor is basically the ceiling, Okuyasu came up with that prediction and Josuke tried to make him think that that is not how that works. But it never clicked in Okuyasu’s mind. Okuyasu never ceased to amaze Josuke. Josuke never got why no one asked Okuyasu out, yes he was loud, and dumb, but those were the best parts about him, and his looks were so sharp, natural beauty. Josuke caught himself smiling at Okuyasu for too long, but before he could look away Okuyasu caught it too.
“Dude, you’ve been smiling at me for a long time.”
“Haha, sorry bro.”
Okuyasu shoved it off and continued with his prediction, “But I’m telling you, that’s how it works!!! Ask anyone!!!”
“If I asked anyone then I'm pretty sure they’d think I was dumb.” Josuke jokingly said.
“Are you calling me dumb!!?” Okuyasu complained, shoving Josuke’s shoulder.
Josuke laughed.
He waved his arm, “Well dude I’m over here! See ya tomorrow!”
“See ya!!” Okuyasu waved back.
Okuyasu opened his front door and walked inside, shutting it behind him.
“Hey, what’s up Oku! How was school?” Keicho waved, while preparing food for the dinner they were going to have tonight. Okuyasu would always cook the food, but Keicho would prepare it, to take up time since all he did was stay at home and do the occasional shopping.
Okuyasu threw his bag down onto the couch, and the dance paper fell out of his bag and onto the ground, “Eh, yah it was okay.”
Keicho walked over into the living room and picked up the pink paper, taking his glasses off the top of his head and putting them down on his face, “Are you going to this?”
“I guess, I mean I don’t have anyone to take out. But if Josuke is taking out a hot chick I’ll just be a third wheel.” Okuyasu sighed.
“Why? Just ask someone out?”
Okuyasu gave Keicho the nastiest glare.
Keicho put his hands up in “defense” jokingly, “Okay Okay my bad.”
Okuyasu walked up the stairs and into his bedroom, only one day until the dance, he thought. “What am I going to do!” Okuyasu jumped onto his bed laying on his back staring at the ceiling. ‘Maybe I’ll ask Koichi what he’s doing, but he’s probably going out with his girlfriend, Yukako.’ He thought.
Okuyasu let his eyes shut and took a quick nap before he had to get up and cook dinner for him and his brother.
***
Okuyasu squinted his eyes open to the yelling of his brother. “Oku!!!!”
“I’m coming, I'm coming!!”
Okuyasu bolted up, making his way downstairs slowly. He smelt cooked food, cooked food? But he was the one who cooked it. Okuyasu walked into the living room and into the dining room to see the table made with plates full of yummy food.
“What’s this?” Okuyasu scratched his head, his hair being all messed up from his nap.
Keicho smiled softly, “Well, you looked tired and bummed out, so I decided to cook dinner tonight.”
Okuyasu ran to Keicho giving him a hug, “HAHA!!! THANK YOU BRO!!!”
Keicho hugged him back quickly, “Oku, the food is going to get cold!” He laughed.
“Right!”
Okuyasu eagerly sat down at the table with Keicho.
Keicho and Okuyasu moved here a little after their mom passed and their dad left them. Keicho couldn’t leave Okuyasu, especially after their mom passed away, and their bitch of a dad, if they could even call him that, left them a month after their mom passed, at the ripe age of thirteen and ten. Keicho made sure that no one would ever leave Okuyasu like that ever again, and made sure he had a great childhood.
“Mmmmm!!! This is delicious!” Okuyasu muffled, with spaghetti stuffed in his mouth.
Keicho smiled, “So, what about that paper? Are you sure there aren’t any cute girls at school…or boys…that you want to ask out to the dance?”
Okuyasu nervously took a big gulp of his water.
“Heh, well, I have one person in mind, but he is probably going out with someone else.”
Keicho raised a brow. Keicho already knew Okuyasu was gay, and he didn’t care, he would support his brother, or anyone else for that matter.
“So do I know this guy?”
“Yah…”
“Let me guess, Josuke?” Keicho crossed his arms smiling.
Okuyasu smiled nervously. You could always tell when Okuyasu was lying, he would always do a stupid smile and turn red. Anyone who was his friend would know when he was lying or not.
Keicho grabbed the salt, “Ah! Well it doesn’t hurt to ask!”
“Yah, true, I guess.”
After dinner, Okuyasu went up to his room and got ready for bed. Now he was laying on his bed in the dark staring at the ceiling thinking about how he was going to ask Josuke out.
***
It was the next day at school and all that was happening was everyone asking their crushes out to the dance, and it got Okuyasu kind of nervous. During lunch Okuyasu asked Josuke a question, and he was hoping the answer would be no.
Okuyasu and Josuke were sitting on the roof for lunch like they always do, to get away from everyone else, and sometimes Koichi would join them but he was eating with his girlfriend. They both sat next to each other on the bench leaning against the fence behind their backs.
“Hey, dude, I have a question for you.” Okuyasu said, opening a box of Pocky’s, his favorite snack.
Josuke turned his head with his mouth full of food, “What’s up?” He muffled.
“Are ‘ya takin’ anyone out to the dance?” Okuyasu asked, scratching the back of his neck and looking down at the ground.
Josuke was waiting for this question but he didn’t know how to say that he wanted to take Okuyasu out to the dance, so he lied on the spot. “Yah, one of the girls from the other class.”
Okuyasu’s heart shattered. His face dropped down and all the sudden it went quiet. But he couldn’t let this get in the way, he’ll just go talk to Keicho about it later.
“Ooooo! What a lucky girl!!!!” Okuyasu joked punching Josuke on the shoulder, wishing he was the girl Josuke was taking out.
The rest of the day Okuyasu couldn’t help but think about Josuke taking out anyone other than him, and he was running out of time to tell him anything. It bothered him the rest of the school day.
Josuke on the other hand was worried. Because he lied, to his best friend, that he secretly had a crush on. He needed to talk to someone about this. And he knew just the right person.
After school ended Jouske walked over to Jotaro’s house, they didn’t live far from each other. Jotaro lived with his husband, Kakyoin.
Josuke walked up to Jotaro’s front porch and knocked on the door, nervous to whom would answer the door. Jotaro was very intimidating, but Kakyoin on the other hand was calm and sweet.
The door creaked open, and it was Kakyoin. He had glasses, bright red hair with some gray hairs, and his iconic cherry earrings.
“Hey! Sorry for the sudden incoming but I could use some advice right now from you two.” Josuke said nervously, scratching the back of his neck.
Kakyoin smiled softly, “Ah! Yes! Of course, come in! Come in!”
He opened the door more, motioning for Josuke to come in.
Josuke walked into the house as Kakyoin shut the door behind him. Josuke saw Jotaro, writing something down in what looked like a journal of some sort, in the kitchen.
“Let’s go to the kitchen and I’ll make some tea!” Kakyoin said, letting Josuke walk into the kitchen in front of him. Jotaro looked up from his writing and smiled. Josuke could never tell what Jotaro was thinking, even from the expressions he gave.
Jotaro waved his hand up, “Josuke!”
“H-hi!” Josuke waved, surprised.
Kakyoin pulled out a seat next to Jotaro, “Here sweetheart, have a seat.”
Josuke smiled and nodded, sitting down in the chair.
“So what advice do you need?” Kakyoin asked, filling up the cups with hot water.
“Well, you know, our school has an end of the year dance for all the highschoolers and everyone is asking their crushes out. Heh well yah, I somehow managed to mess up asking my crush out to the dance,” He continued. “and I wanted to ask you guys how you knew you both liked each other.”
Kakyoin walked over to the table holding two mugs of hot tea, handing one to Josuke and pulled out a chair to sit next to Jotaro on the other side.
Kakyoin shut his eyes, trying to remember when they first met.
“Woah, that was a long time ago let’s see.” Jotaro whistled.
Kakyoin took a sip of his tea, “It was the beginning of highschool and let's just say I was a bit of a loser back then and I had no friends, but, Jotaro was the only one who would talk to me. So we would hang out at school and even out of school everyday, so our bond together became very strong. One summer day we were both in Jotaro’s room playing video games when Jotaro blurted out I like you! and of course I felt the same way, you should’ve seen how red he was, but then we started dating from then on.” Kakyoin smiled, resting his head on Jotaro’s shoulder.
Jotaro left a kiss on Kakyoin’s head.
Josuke raised a brow, “Jotaro? Him? Confessed first? No way!” He snorted.
“Right? As crazy as it sounds he did!”
“So how did you mess up? And who’s this lucky person?” Jotaro asked.
Josuke nervously laughed, “Well, I kinda lied to him saying that I was going out with one of the girls from the other class because I didn’t know if I should tell him.” He blurted out.
“Okuyasu?” They both asked.
Josuke nodded.
Kakyoin sighed, “Well you better go make it right.”
“When is this dance?” Jotaro asked.
“Tonight.”
“You better tell him tonight and apologize.” Kakyoin said.
“Right! Thank you! I will do it tonight!” Josuke exclaimed, darting up from his chair, pushing it in and running out the door.
“Young love.” They both laughingly said, looking at each other.
***
Okuyasu was at home in his room, sitting on his bed crying, while Keicho was trying to comfort him.
“He said he was going out with someone else already!” Okuyasu sobbed.
“Did he specify who? Or say her name?”
“No?”
Keicho figured that Josuke lied on the spot. “Well how do you know that he’s not lying?”
Okuyasu lifted up his head, making eye contact with his brother, “What do you mean? Are you trying to tell me he lied to me, bro?”
“Wouldn’t he go into more detail about this girl and tell you more?” Keicho nodded.
Okuyasu bolted up, “Why would he lie?!” He yelled sobbing.
“Maybe he likes you but he just didn’t know how to say it.”
“You really think *sniffle* he does?”
Keicho smiled, “Only one way to find out. You have to tell him tonight.”
Okuyasu slouched, “Yah, that’s great and all but I don’t have any suits or anything, I ain’t like that.”
Keicho got up from the bed, “Give me a minute.” He said, walking out of Okuyasu’s bedroom, and coming back with a black suit, black dress pants, and a dark purple tie, neatly hanging from a hanger.
Okuyasu’s eyes widened.
“You could wear this, Oku.”
“Where did you get that?”
Keicho laughed, “Well, I went to this dance when I was in highschool, and I wore this exact suit.”
“Did you go out with anyone?” Okuyasu asked.
“Yes, well, I had many exes, but they would all cheat and break up with me though. But this particular dance I asked out this one guy and he said yes. We both met up at the dance and hung out, we both had a great time, but the second I looked the other way and back around, I saw him making out with another guy.”
“Damn. What an asshole.”
“So you’re telling me I can wear this bro?!” Okuyasu exclaimed.
Keicho nodded, handing Okuyasu the hanger with the suit on it.
Okuyasu had tears streaming down his face even more, this time, these tears were tears of joy.
“Go try it on you big baby!” Keicho laughed.
“Right!”
Keicho left the room and stood out in the hallway waiting a couple of minutes for Okuyasu to get changed.
The door opened and Okuyasu stepped out of his room in front of Keicho. The suit fit him perfectly, complimenting his unique physique.
“What do we thinkkkk?” Okuyasu squealed, turning around to show more of the suit.
Keicho could almost cry, his little brother was growing up too fast, but he couldn’t cry now and ruin the mood.
“That looks amazing on you! You’re growing up so fast!”
“Stop thattttt” Okuyasu laughed, punching his brother on the shoulder.
It was almost time for the dance, the sun was setting and people started making their way down to the school. The dance was being held in the big gym at the high school.
Okuyasu sprayed some cologne to make sure he smelled good and slicked back his hair. He ran downstairs to put his shoes on quickly. “I’m going to tell him!” He yelled to Keicho in the other room.
“Go get ‘em champ!” Keicho yelled back.
Okuyasu darted out the door and ran down the road quickly down to the school.
****
Okuyasu ran in front of the school, his eyes shut with tears. When he accidentally ran into someone. Josuke.
“Ah! S-sorry man!” Okuyasu said, opening his eyes.
Okuyasu realized who he ran into.
“I have to tell you something!” They both said, looking into each other's eyes. Distant laughter and music coming from the gym. The sky was a pretty red and orange color.
“You go first bro!” Okuyasu blurted out.
Josuke blushed, “I’m sorry I lied to you! I’m not actually going out with a girl tonight! I-I love you! And only you bro!”
Okuyasu’s eyes widened and a wind of relief washed over him.
“I love you too bro!” Okuyasu blurted back.
Silence after that, both just looking at each other.
“Just kiss me already bro!” Josuke cried out.
Okuyasu grabbed Josuke’s face and their lips collided.
Okuyasu had never kissed anyone before, let alone a guy. But it felt nice to kiss someone. Especially the person you love. But it did seem like Josuke kissed many people before, I mean of course, he could pull anyone if he wanted to.
Josuke ran his fingers through Okuyasu’s black slick back and wrapped his arm around his waist.
Their lips separated, with their foreheads together. They both just stood there in silence with faint music in the background, but in that moment, it felt like it was just those two and the world. Looking into each other's eyes, they both shared a soft smile. Josuke’s face started to turn red and tears formed from his eyes.
“What’s wrong, bro?” Okuyasu asked, using his thumb to wipe Josuke’s tears away.
“I-I lied to you.”
Okuyasu laughed, “Dude! That’s water under the bridge! It’s okay! Crying is my job!”
Josuke smiled.
“No more crying, okay?” Okuyasu said.
“No more crying.” Josuke repeated.
Josuke gave Okuyasu one more little kiss on the cheek, “Shall we go have some fun?”
Okuyasu nodded. Someone actually loved him.
Josuke took Okuyasu’s hand intertwining their fingers together, and walked into the gym.
