Work Text:
A long time ago, before the first humans or even the first dinosaurs, there was Mater Pangaea. Born out of the fusions of the land itself, she sought nothing more than companionship and company of similar beings. Prior to her existence, there were many other fusions and dissolution of the very land she walked on, but no being ever came to form. At least, until she did.
Despite the company of the surrounding flora and fauna, she felt alone.
So she waited. Every day near the great blue seas, she stood by the shore and prayed with all her heart for a companion. But nobody came, nobody at all, and this only broke Mater Pangaea's heart.
One day, a miracle happened. As Pangaea prayed as she usually did on the shores, a pair of eyes was seen staring back at her from the depths of the waves. When she went closer to inspect them, assuming it was her reflection, Mater Pangaea realized in shock that those eyes were not her own.
In fact, they eyes were of Mater Panthalassa's, a being born from the great sea surrounding the very land Mater Pangaea represented.
Mater Panthalassa was just as lonely as Mater Pangaea was, never having much company aside from the prokaryotes and eukaryotes in the ocean, as well as the small aquatic creatures that evolved from them. She was merely curious when she heard the cries and prayers from above the surface, following the source of the sounds to the shore.
When Mater Panthalassa reached out her hand, Mater Pangaea clasped it, feeling a cool rush of water. Mater Pangaea grabbed the hand tightly and pulled Mater Pantalassa out of the sea. When Mater Pantalassa reached the ground, she appeared as a puddle before slowly morphing into a more humanoid form.
After that, the two embraced for the first time, finally knowing what companionship truly was like. Thus, the first friendship between Countryhumans and Oceanspirits was formed, resulting in a prospering bond leading up to the foundation of Neo Pangaea.
Mater Pangaea would perish thousands of years later. As the land started breaking apart, she lost first her mind, and then her body. Cracks began forming on her body, and her tears became crystals as she wailed and wailed. She fell into an eternal slumber one day, and not even hundreds of years later, she was already a pile of dust.
Mater Pangaea's legacy would live on as by then she already had two children, Laurasia and Gondwanaland. And her two children would eventually have their own children, starting two branches of lineage for the beings of continents. It is said her tears, the Seven Stones, could bring prosperity to the one who has them all.
As for Mater Pantalassa, her whereabouts as well as her fate is unknown. However, like Mater Pangaea, her legacy lives on. First in her child, Tethys, and then in her child's children and their children.
