Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“Amber? Are you out here?” I’m rushing through the trees now, desperately trying to reach her; my love. She’s been ignoring my texts for days, and every call has gone to voicemail. Her house is empty, she has to be in these woods, she has to. Suddenly I hear a sound, and I fall silent. It’s the sound of muffled weeping. She’s crying for certain, but why is she trying to hide from me? I follow the slowly quieting hysterics as she tries to conceal herself from me, until I reach a clearing with a hideous beast inside. It’s form resembles that of a human, but with it’s face seeming to melt from its flesh, and it’s fingers warping into terrible claws. “Who am I?” Amber asks. “What do you mean,” I respond. She says nothing, but I understand. She’s lost herself. It’s a rare phenomenon in shifters, when they transform one too many times and forget what they look like, and, eventually, who they are. “Here” I say, pulling out my beaten old Android. “This is you.” I point to a girl on my homescreen with beautiful blonde hair and glasses. As usual she’s wearing overalls, muddy from days in the barn. I see a flash of light, and scream, for Amber has transformed again, but she does not resemble herself at all. Her skin is a sickening yellow, and her eyes are circled in red. “Go” Amber tells me. “I’ve lost myself, I will become a brainless husk in this forest, and there’s nothing you can do.” “You can never lose yourself while I’m here,” I say, and then I kiss her, though she initially tries pushing me away, she eventually accepts my embrace, and in that moment, as I hug this sickening creature I’m lucky enough to call my girl, I am certain that all will be well.
