Sieun always thought he was going to be alone for the rest of his life.
Until his baby brother, Jooyoung, was born.
''Sieun-ah, your brother is cute, isn't he? You can take care of him while I'm at work, can't you? You're a big boy now. A big brother.’’
It was what his mother had told him, while Sieun was staring down at his brother in the crib.
Jooyoung was born just a few weeks ago, but he already resembled Sieun so much. Everyone who visited their house and met Jooyoung said the same thing.
Jooyoung had Sieun's pretty doe eyes, his plump lips, and his little button nose. The family was sure that once Jooyoung got older, they'd look like twins with Sieun.
Both of them were also male Omegas and had similar scents.
Sieun's Omega scent was a peachy scent, while Jooyoung's scent was a strawberry scent. Both of them smelled like sweet fruits, and they also shared the same face.
''Sieun-ah, here's the milk bottle. The diapers are also in his room. Take care now,'' Sieun was only 10 years old when his mother practically turned him into Jooyoung's babysitter. He was a 10 year old pup, barely 130cm tall, barely weighing 30kg, and was abandoned in the house to look after his newborn baby brother.
It felt strange.
Sieun found it very strange.
When his mother's pregnancy was announced, Sieun was happy. He thought they were finally going to be like a normal family again. He thought his mother was finally going to pay attention to him.
But he was very wrong.
He felt like crying while staring down at his baby brother, who was now making grabby hands at him. He just sniffled, holding back his tears, and awkwardly picked up Jooyoung so he could feed him.
It was very awkward at first. Jooyoung was quite heavy for a 2-month-old baby. Sieun was a kid himself, but after a few minutes, he found a position that was comfortable for both.
Only Jooyoung, eagerly suckling on the milk bottle, echoed in the nursery room.
Sieun almost fell asleep during the feeding. For some reason, having his baby brother on his lap had soothed him. Was it because they were both Omegas, and he felt comforted by his sweet strawberry scent?
Either way, Sieun had come to like feeding Jooyoung, even if Jooyoung felt so heavy on his lap.
Every day, after school, Sieun rushed to prepare the milk for Jooyoung.
He was struggling at first. His mother kept pressuring him to be a good student at school, while also taking care of his infant brother. How did she expect a child to look after a child himself?
Either way, Sieun was slowly adapting to it and was even looking forward to taking after Jooyoung. It filled his lonely, neglected heart and made him happy.
He grew to love Jooyoung's cute little babbles and the way his chubby hands always reached to scratch his cheeks. Sieun loved taking care of Jooyoung, even if he had to change the diapers that grossed him out.
He didn't mind, even if Jooyoung often puked on him after his feedings.
He grew to love his baby brother. Jooyoung was so cute, after all.
Perhaps, because he was raised under Sieun's care, he'd grow up to be very adorable.
Sieun just didn't know it yet.
How important he would be for his baby brother.
''Jooyoung-ah, let's read this picture book together. I bought many for you.’’
It was another day, with Sieun having his baby brother on his lap. Sieun often did his homework and then played with Jooyoung for the whole evening.
He enjoyed reading picture books with him or playing with toys together.
On Jooyoung's first birthday, their mother was absent again. Their father also kept using the same old excuses of being busy with the important team he coached. Sometimes, Sieun felt like his dad loved his stupid team of athletes more than he loved them.
In fact, he was convinced he loved that team of Alphas more than he loved them.
Sieun and Jooyoung were both male Omegas. Sieun was sure it was why his father hated them.
''Jooyoung-ah, it's okay. I'll make the first birthday fun for you,'' Sieun mumbled, while staring down at his brother, who was now dressed in hanbok, looking like the cutest prince. Sieun took many photos, cherishing them in his phone.
He made the picture of one-year-old Jooyoung in a hanbok as his phone wallpaper.
Jooyoung looked so pretty in the pink hanbok robes and the crown on his small head, ''Hm, let's see what you'll choose. I wonder what you'll do in your life...''
It was late in the evening, in their apartment. There were various items sprawled all over the fluffy carpet. Sieun was following the first birthday tradition they had in their country. It was a celebration to see what item the baby would choose, which would predict their future.
Sieun had placed various items on the carpet: a book, a pencil, money, a microphone, and a soft ball.
His eyes were on Jooyoung, who was currently crawling, exploring all the items in front of him. He hadn't picked anything yet. Sieun was curious to see what Jooyoung would choose.
But then, Jooyoung ended up crawling back to Sieun instead, tiny hands wrapping around Sieun's waist, ''Jooyoung-ah, you're supposed to choose an item, silly.''
''E...om...mma!'' while still being nuzzled on Sieun's lap, Jooyoung had probably blurted out his first word at Sieun. Eomma. It was typical of a one-year-old baby to call out for their mom. But it almost made Sieun want to cry.
Because he was sure his baby brother was calling him Eomma.
''Jooyoung-ah,'' Sieun gave Jooyoung's body a squeeze, chuckling softly, ''Do you miss Eomma? I miss her too.''
Sieun suddenly became gloomy. He wondered how lonely his first birthday was. Was he all alone, with a babysitter looking after him instead?
Well, he was glad that he had kept Jooyoung company on his first birthday at least. Jooyoung wasn't alone. Sieun didn't want his baby brother to have the same lonely childhood that he had.
''Eomma...Eomma!'' Jooyoung continued calling Sieun mom as the months went by. The pup was now almost 2, and he continued viewing Sieun as his mom. How could he not, when Sieun was the one feeding him in the high chair, changing his diaper, and playing with him every single day?
Jooyoung barely recognized his mother's face or scent.
He only felt comforted by Sieun.
''Jooyoung-ah, I'm not Eomma. I'm your hyung. Try calling me that. Sieun Hyung. Hyung.''
Sieun had Jooyoung on his lap like usual, trying to correct his words again. Now that Jooyoung was 2, he was able to talk and understand things more. But he still called Sieun Eomma. Sieun was trying his best to change that.
Slowly, Jooyoung addressed Sieun as 'hyung' or 'ungg.'
Sometimes, he would slip up and still call him Eomma, though.
''Sieun-ah, you're a middle school student now, so focus on your studies, okay? I'm sure you'll do well.’’
When Sieun joined middle school, he felt all alone again. He was 12 years old, taking care of a 2-year-old baby. He felt like he wasn't a real person sometimes.
Things got worse when he got blood on his underwear one early morning.
Sieun knew what it was. It was something all Omegas his age went through.
But he still felt quite overwhelmed. He couldn't ask his mother about it. He couldn't ask for comfort.
He only said to her, ''Mother, my period has come.' in a monotonous voice.
The only words his mother told him that day were to be careful of pregnancies and Alphas from now on.
Sieun ended up crying all alone in his bedroom that night, with one hand rubbing his aching stomach.
"Hyung~" in between his soft cries, Jooyoung's cute voice calling for him distracted him.
"Jooyoung-ah, " Sieun quickly wiped his tears, sniffling, "Come here. Let's sleep with Hyung. Let's nest. It will be our nest..."
Then, Sieun carefully picked up Jooyoung and placed him on the bed. With many scented pillows and blankets around them, the two Omega siblings cuddled up to each other for comfort.
Sieun still felt quite overwhelmed, but at least he wasn't alone anymore. He had his baby brother by his side.
''Jooyoung-ah, you'll be going to kindergarten next year, so you need to get used to this. Okay? You can't play with Hyung all the time.’’
A few years went by, and Jooyoung had turned 4. Sieun was also in his last year of middle school.
Soon, the two of them would begin a new stage in their lives.
Jooyoung was going to join kindergarten, while Sieun would become a high school student.
''Let's play here, with the other pups.'' Sieun decided to take Jooyoung to the local playground so his baby brother could get used to playing around with other kids. He already hated going to the nursery school, so now, he had to get used to kindergarten as well.
It was a struggle.
Jooyoung was quite clingy and only wanted to stay by Sieun's side.
But in the end, he ended up approaching some young pups in the playground.
Sieun was sitting near the benches, while watching his baby brother fool around with the other pups. There were three pups that were currently playing in a sandbox together. Jooyoung was giggling while babbling something about the sand to them.
Sieun just chuckled, watching them from afar.
Even though Jooyoung often complained about the other pups, he was always pretty good at making friends. He barely met them a few minutes ago, and they were already hugging and giggling together.
One could say that Jooyoung was all cute and bubbly, unlike Sieun, who had no friends in his whole school life.
Yes, Sieun led a very lonely life at school. But he didn't mind so much. It was pretty peaceful.
''Hyungie~play with Joongg!'' Suddenly, Jooyoung began to wave at Sieun across the sandbox, urging him to join them. Joong. Jooyoung called himself that. He still struggled to say his name properly.
Sieun just chuckled softly and did as he was told. He joined Jooyoung and the other pups in the sandbox, helping them build a sandcastle. It was a normal morning in the playground...
Until...
''Yah, Geum Sugang. Just stay on the fucking slide. Don't piss me off. I'm going to abandon your ass here, got it? You'll be an orphan. A lame orphan!''
A bit further away in the playground slides, there was a tall Alpha that was around Sieun's age. Sieun could only see his back, but he could tell they were the same age. His voice was as loud as ever, which made Sieun and the pups gaze in his direction.
The Alpha was also hanging out with his younger brother in the playground, the way Sieun was doing.
But their dynamic was...completely different.
''Fuck...you!'' the young pup that was currently stuck on top of the green slide had just cursed at his older brother. Sieun softly gasped and instantly covered Jooyoung's ears, completely scandalized by what he was hearing.
''Jooyoung-ah, don't listen to them. Don't look. Let's go somewhere else, hm?'' Sieun then gently grabbed Jooyoung's hand and began walking further away from the playground with him.
The Alpha's voice continued to echo in the playground. Sugang...was definitely a name Sieun would remember.
Sugang was a little devil pup for sure.
Sieun hoped they'd never meet the two brothers ever again...
But fate had other plans for them.
''Hyuuung, I like this!'' Jooyoung was pointing at a backpack that he liked while browsing through the store with his older brother. It was time for Jooyoung to join kindergarten, so they were buying all the essential items.
''Sure, let's buy this one, Jooyoung-ah.'' Sieun slightly smiled down at his baby brother and patted his head. He grabbed the backpack that had a cute baby chick on it, and then they browsed the store some more.
With their mother's money, Sieun was able to spoil Jooyoung and buy him many things.
Jooyoung, at that age, loved plushies and dolls, so Sieun ended up buying him a few things like that. He was going to add all the scented plushies to their nest.
''Sieun-ah, I hear this school is nice. Make sure to do well now, hm? I think you should go for Economics. It will suit you, getting a job at the bank,'' later in the evening, Sieun felt as awkward as ever.
For the first time in a while, the four of them were having dinner as a family. Sieun could tell that Jooyoung still barely recognized his mother's face and felt uncomfortable around her. Their father was no different.
Jooyoung only felt comfortable around Sieun.
''Y-yes, mother. I'll do as you say,'' Sieun mumbled, gazing down at his soup.
Jooyoung was also trying to eat the soup with the spoon, but he had already spilled most of it on the table. His mother just sighed, watching him, ''And Sieun, you'll be joining cram school. Someone needs to look after Jooyoung for a few hours. I've signed him up to an after-school daycare, okay?''
''Oh...okay.''
Sieun simply nodded to his mother's words and then continued playing around with his soup. He kept staring down at the spicy soup, not in the mood to eat. He felt like things would change from now on.
He'd be a high school student soon.
And his baby brother would slowly spread his wings as well.
''Hyuuuung,'' of course, on the first day of kindergarten, Jooyoung was clinging to Sieun, not wanting to go without him. Sieun gently let go of him and told him to be a good pup for Hyung.
''Jooyoung-ah, you're a big pup now. You must spread your wings and make friends. Listen to your teachers and do well, okay? It will make Hyung happy if you do that.''
Sieun was standing outside the kindergarten, crouched down, hugging his baby brother one last time.
5 years had passed since Jooyoung's birth, and Sieun was still acting like his parent. The kindergarten teacher always cooed at the loving relationship the two of them had, telling them that they looked exactly the same and such. Sieun truly cared about Jooyoung; anyone could see that.
Jooyoung was always talking about his Sieun hyung in kindergarten, while also bonding with his classmates at the same time.
Sieun didn't worry about Jooyoung. He always made friends very easily. Perhaps, because he was an adorable pup, everyone wanted to be friends with him.
Sieun, on the other hand, spent the first year in high school living like a ghost. He only focused on his studies and nothing else. He paid no attention to the annoying Alpha classmates who sometimes glared at him or whispered about him.
But for how long could he avoid them?
They were all young Alphas and Omegas, at the peak of their hormones. Sieun knew that a few of them would soon cause problems.
''Jooyoung-ah, make sure to listen to your teachers and do your homework every day, okay?'' Another year went by like this. Sieun couldn't believe it. His baby brother was a 1st grader by then. He felt a little emotional, seeing Jooyoung with the tiny backpack on his back, entering the classroom.
It felt like Jooyoung was his child instead.
Jooyoung was happily waving at him from the classroom with the brightest smile on his face.
Sieun just chuckled and waved back at him, wishing him good luck on his first day again.
But Sieun didn't know...that this would be the day that would change everything in their lives.
''Jooyoung-ah, how was your first day?’’
It was late in the evening when Sieun returned from cram school. Jooyoung was happily playing on the fluffy carpet with his dolls.
''Hyungie!'' Then, the younger pup latched onto his older brother, nuzzling against his chest.
Sieun just chuckled and gently patted his smaller body, ''Jooyoung-ah, let's see your books together. I want you to be a good student. Be like hyung, okay?''
''Hmm....okayy~'' Sieun could tell that Jooyoung wasn't very excited about studying. It made him laugh a little. But it was still pretty fun, browsing through Jooyoung's school books together. It made Sieun reminisce about his old elementary school days.
He was all alone back then, as usual.
''Hyung, going now!'' a few more days passed. It seemed like Jooyoung really enjoyed going to school, and Sieun wasn't sure why. Jooyoung wasn't very excited about doing his homework every day. But he enjoyed going to school.
Sieun figured Jooyoung had made new friends and was having fun.
Oh well, it warmed his heart.
Sieun only wanted his baby brother to be happy.
But then, one day...
''Jooyoung-ah, what's this in your ear?’’
While Sieun was helping Jooyoung with his homework, he noticed something strange. There was a large bite mark on Jooyoung's earlobe. It looked like it had bled.
Truth be told, it reminded Sieun of a mating bite.
It made Sieun's heart pound in his chest. What if someone was molesting his brother, and he wasn't aware?
Sieun felt like he couldn't breathe for a moment, lots of cold sweat covering his whole body, ''Joo...young...you...is someone h-hurting you?''
''Hm?'' Jooyoung just tilted his head, smiling at his hyung, ''Hyungie, I'm okaay!''
''Who did this to you, Jooyoung-ah?'' Sieun asked again, his voice a little shaky. He kept staring at the bite on Jooyoung's earlobe. He felt like he was going to pass out soon. He didn't know what to do if someone was harming his brother.
He'd probably kill them.
''Sugangie!'' Jooyoung then happily replied, still smiling.
Sieun froze for a moment. Why did the name sound so familiar?
''Who's that?'' Sieun asked again, still feeling out of breath.
''Classmate~Sugangie!'' Jooyoung replied in the same cheerful tone again. Ah, Sieun felt like he could finally breathe again. The one who had bitten Jooyoung's ear was a classmate. It wasn't an adult, at least.
''Wait. Why is he biting your ear then?'' and then, it hit him. Why was an Alpha pup biting on his brother's earlobe?!
''Hmm....'' Jooyoung just shrugged, then burst into a fit of giggles, ''Sugangie wants to eat Joong!''
Sieun just let out a soft sigh, rubbing his temple. Judging from his brother's words, Jooyoung wasn't getting bullied. But it still bothered Sieun the fact that his baby brother had a large mating bite on his earlobe.
Sieun didn't know that having a mating bite at that age was even possible!
But it was!
Sieun ended up searching it on Naver, and it was possible for young Alpha pups to give Omega pups a mating bite, even from age 1. Sieun was definitely...shocked.
''Jooyoung-ah, if you want him to stop, just tell him, okay? Doesn't it hurt? It looks like it bled?'' Sieun insisted, still gazing down at the mating bite against the pup's earlobe. The earlobe was a very sensitive area indeed. Sieun wondered about getting infected and such.
''It's okayy, hyungie~'' Jooyoung cutely said and then latched onto Sieun, starting to feel sleepy. Sieun just sighed and ended up tucking Jooyoung to bed. He kissed the pup's forehead and went to sleep in his own bedroom as well.
He hoped this so-called Sugang would stop biting on his brother's ear.
But the following week, it happened again.
And the bite was slightly bleeding. It made Sieun see red!
He called the school and informed them that he'd like to see Sugang's guardian so they could talk about his indecent behavior. Geum Sugang. Sieun found out the pup's name after calling the school.
He didn't let their parents know about this and instead went to confront Sugang's guardian himself. Sieun was more of a parent to Jooyoung than their actual parents anyway.
''You asked to see us, princess?’’
When Sieun reached the school gates, he met with Sugang's (very handsome) guardian. But it wasn't what Sieun expected.
In front of him was a tall Alpha student who was definitely Sieun's age, currently blowing smoke towards them. There was also a young pup that reached up to his waist. They both resembled each other so much that Sieun figured they were brothers.
The Geum brothers.
''Are you Sugang's guardian...brother?'' Sieun simply asked, gazing at them up and down.
''Unfortunately, I'm his brother, yes.'' The older Alpha brother said, letting out a sigh, gazing down to his troublemaker brother, ''Seongje's the name, babe. Yours?''
''I'm not interested in you, jerk. Just tell your devil brother to stop biting my brother's ear!'' Sieun ended up hissing at the Alpha, making Seongje burst into laughter.
''Oh dear, just relax, princess. Want me to bite your ear as well?'' Seongje offered with a grin, throwing the cigarette on the ground. He was about to take a step closer when a high-pitched voice emerged behind them.
''Sugangie?'' Of course, Sieun recognized his baby brother's voice.
''Crybaby!'' Sugang then ran past Sieun and latched onto Jooyoung, as if he were a wild animal. Sieun was shocked to see it happening in front of him. But Sugang's mouth latched onto Jooyoung's ear right away. It was like there was honey in his ear, and Sugang didn't want to let go.
''What the hell is wrong with him?'' Sieun mumbled, slightly horrified, frozen by what he was seeing.
But the worst part was that Jooyoung remained in place, giggling while Sugang was playfully biting him.
''See, princess, these two are just playing. I'm sure they're going to be a thing when they get older, heh. Should we also date? You're so damn pretty. I've never seen an Omega look so pretty while glaring at me before.''
Sieun had the urge to punch the Alpha's face and smash the expensive glasses that he was wearing.
''I'm never going to date you, jerk. And Jooyoung will stay away from your lunatic brother as well!''
After giving Seongje another cold warning, Sieun separated the two pups and walked away. Both Jooyoung and Sugang whined as they got separated, but Sieun didn't care.
Seongje just remained against the school gates, laughing while watching Sieun from afar.
Because of his devil brother, Seongje got to meet the Omega of his dreams.
