Work Text:

You closed your eyes and tilted your head toward the chilly night sky, letting the laughter, music, and warmth of the bonfire wash over you. Your friends had dragged you out to their annual Christmas celebration, insisting you needed “fresh air and human interaction” or whatever nonsense they’d yelled through your bedroom door.

Truthfully, you had wanted nothing more than to stay curled up with a book under three blankets, but alas, here you were. Somehow—despite the chaos, the games, the shouts, and the drunken singing—you found a small, quiet pocket of peace where you could simply exist.

You breathed in the air deeply, thinking about the year you’d survived, the blessings you’d gathered, the way your friends had held you up without even realizing it.

Then your thoughts drifted to the one person who warmed you even with all the icy chill that clung to him like a second skin.

The one whose presence you felt before you even saw him.

You felt your lips curve into a soft smile. Bi-Han sat beside you on the wooden bench, the crackling bonfire painting gold along the sharp lines of his face. He rarely spoke but the way he positioned himself just close enough, the way his arm brushed yours every time he breathed, was his version of an embrace.

You tilted your head slightly toward him, eyes still closed.

“Bi-Han…” you whispered, like sharing a secret with the night.

He shifted closer, the faint tension in his muscles melting the second you leaned your weight into him. You felt him exhale quietly, like your presence grounded him as much as his did you.

Funny how timing worked.

When you’d met him, everything in your life had been unraveling at once. You were still studying, trying to balance school with the exhausting, unforgiving demands of adulthood. And then your boyfriend of three years had tossed you aside like you were nothing, leaving you completely gutted.

You’d been convinced nothing could fix the ache in your chest.

Your friends had dragged you out for a night in the village, promising it’d “help you reset.” They’d insisted you needed fresh air, new surroundings, maybe even someone new to flirt with but the last thing you wanted was anyone near your heart.

You’d stumbled up to the bar, asked for a water in the most defeated voice known to mankind, and plopped yourself onto the nearest stool. Your fingers were pressed into your temples, massaging away the headache that was already blooming behind your eyes.

You barely noticed the icy shift in the air beside you until it made you shiver.

Then you glanced sideways.

Bi-Han sat there, arms folded, a permanent scowl set on his face like he’d won it in a contest. The frigid aura he carried clung to him the way smoke clung to the bonfire outside. For reasons still unknown to you, he actually looked annoyed on your behalf.

Somehow, surprisingly, you ended up talking. One sarcastic comment turned into another, and before long, you were letting this intimidating, emotionally constipated man walk you home “out of courtesy.”

It didn’t stop there.

You kept bumping into each other after that—market stalls, village festivals, late-night walks.

As if the universe got bored and decided to shove you two together until something stuck.

You smiled unconsciously at the memory, leaning closer to him now, shoulder brushing his.

Nothing had been made official yet. You’d told him about your past, about the heartbreak that had gutted you, and how you wanted to take things slow.

He had fully understood and respected it, which made moments like this feel even sweeter when his guard slipped, when he let the softness peek through, when sitting next to you by a fire looked almost like his favorite place to be.

You felt a cool hand brush against your cheek gently, almost hesitant, and your eyes fluttered open. Your chin lifted instinctively toward his touch, and there he was, watching you like you were something delicate and impossibly precious.

The firelight danced across his face, catching in his lashes, softening the hard lines he never bothered to hide.

You looked up at him sweetly, like loving him wasn’t something you chose but something your body simply understood.

His thumb stroked along your cheek again, slow and careful, as if learning the shape of you.

“…You look beautiful tonight,” he murmured, voice low and unguarded in a way that made your heart squeeze.

Heat rushed to your face immediately, and you ducked your head, shyness creeping in before you could stop it. He let out a low, fond chuckle, giving you all the time you needed to hide in your embarrassment.

You peeked up again with a timid smile.

“Thank you, Bi-Han… you look lovely as well,” you whispered, sincerity softening every word.

His eyes softened, looking over at you warmly.

“May I kiss you?” he asked softly, the words so out of character they almost stole your breath.

You nodded, shy and warm all at once, lips parting just enough as you tilted toward him. His fingers slid beneath your chin, guiding you gently, angling your mouth with a care that made your chest ache.

Then he kissed you—delicate at first, like he was afraid you’d vanish if he pressed too hard.

You exhaled against him, melting instantly.

He wasn’t an affectionate man in, not openly, but every kiss he gave you felt rare, precious, intentional, like he was choosing you in a way he didn’t choose anyone else.

He pulled back just an inch, enough to let you breathe, before leaning in again. His arm wrapped around your waist, drawing you closer, the kiss blooming into something sweeter, deeper.

A soft moan slipped out of you, uninvited but honest, and his grip tightened ever so slightly as if the sound pulled him under too.

When he finally broke the kiss, his forehead brushed yours, breath cool against your lips, eyes searching your face with raw sincerity he’d never meant to reveal.

“…I love you,” he murmured quietly, unguarded, almost accidental.

But he said it.

And nothing had ever felt more real.

Your eyes widened for a heartbeat before softening, a blush blooming across your cheeks so sweetly it made something in his chest twist. The way you looked at him so tenderly and undeniably in love hit him harder than any blade ever had.

“…I love you too,” you whispered back, just as gentle, just as certain.

His breath caught before exhaling slowly.

He wrapped you in his arms, pulling you against his chest, your head slipping beneath his chin like you belonged there. His hold was firm, as if he was afraid the world might try to take you away.

You smiled into him, eyes fluttering shut, sinking into the quiet safety of his embrace. In that moment, with the bonfire crackling beside you and winter pressing at the edges of everything else, you had never felt warmer.

Loved, held, and chosen by him.

A small miracle wrapped in soft confession and steady arms.

Maybe Christmas miracles were real. After everything tonight, you didn’t doubt it for a second.
