Work Text:
Dropping his bag on the floor next to the doorway, Subspace flopped face down onto his twin sized bed not paying any mind to the dirty clothes he had been wearing all day. It was a long week with him and Medkit having been forced by their higher-ups to go to a conference together much to both of their displeasures. It was already hard enough to work with someone he greatly despised, but the two were basically always forced to be together whether it be their shared apartment or their joint labs. Administration told him that it was an easier way to ensure their safety but he knew that there was likely another hidden motive under it.
Raising his head from the bed Subspace looks up at the alarm clock sitting on the night stand squinting his eyes to check the time. It was 4:32 he would have to get up in about 4 hours if he wanted to get to the lab on time. Getting up and changing into his pajamas, because he was too tired to take a shower, go ahead and sue him, he headed to his and Medkit’s shared bathroom. After brushing his teeth and doing the rest of his nightly routine Subspace started heading back towards his room, passing a sleeping Medkit on the way. Checking the clock again he saw that he only had 3 hours now… great, wasn’t that just swell. Tucking himself under the sheets of his twin sized bed Subspace found himself unable to fall asleep. The knowledge that he would have to wake up for work soon left him tossing and turning, hoping that his body would eventually tire out enough so he could at least get a blink of sleep.
“Subspace?” a voice deep with sleep spoke from the doorway that was now cracked open. It was Medkit. He entered the room and shoved Subspace aside, greatly confusing the man but he still scooted over. Medkit lifted the blanket and slipped under the sheets lying right next to Subspace causing his entire face to turn red.
“Don’t overthink it. You were being loud and woke me up, that's all,” Medkit said matter of factly. He wrapped his arms around Subspace’s waist as if it was second nature, his teal horns brushing against the side of his face. The man’s warmth greatly contrasted the eternal cold Blackrock had. Despite how cold and angry they may act towards each other every day they both knew that they were all they had. Raising his hand Subspace brushed a few loose strands of his snow white hair out of the other’s face.
“Medkit?” Subspace whispered to the other who slowly opened his eyes. Medkit’s teal eyes glazed over with sleep met Subspaces pink.
“I lo-”
Crash
Subspace jolted awake, the crashing sound having put him on edge. Reaching out next to him, expecting a warm body to be lying there, was a cold empty spot that had long been void of any other life. Right. Medkit left him. Reaching up, Subspace gently touched the rotting side of his face. It was a dream, a reminder of a better time. He knew that he wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep the constant night that Blackrock was always draped in made it difficult for him to go to sleep, his insomnia was also not helping. He used to have…him to help Subspace when it had gotten bad. The man somehow always knew when something was wrong, but the two had not been on speaking terms in years.
Lying back down he let a frustrated grown into the pillow. He knew that Medkit never said those words. They never got to actually be together due to the competitive nature of their jobs causing them to constantly clash. Medkit left him. They had an argument over how they should use their inventions and the other man left afterwards.
Subspace should probably get up and go to his lab since he knew that he wasn’t going back to sleep, so he might as well be somewhat productive. Subspace still lived in the same apartment he shared with Medkit, the only real difference was that the other man's room was barricaded off after an especially bad manic episode he had not too long after their argument. It's fine, as long as he had his work and Biografts he didn't need anyone! Not Medkit; Not Hyperlaser, NO ONE! HE WAS THE GREATEST SCIENTIST IN ALL OF BLACKROCK AND HE WILL SHOW THEM THAT HE DOESN'T NEED ANYONE.
