Summary:

Sprout and cosmos first meeting

(Decided to keep as one shot)

Notes:

I’ll say it once and I’ll say it again,SAM IS CANON NONBINARY.

Oh and also sprout is a bit unregulated

Work Text:

Sprout had no idea where Sam was taking him. They just said to follow them, and wouldn’t answer when he asked to where. So he was a bit frustrated.

He tried to think what this was about. He’d heard Delilah was trying to make more toons. Maybe he’s meeting another main? He couldn’t really remember any, though. Maybe it’d come to him when he saw them. He wasn’t sure if any of the other characters were going to be made, probably only the popular ones.

“…Sam?” Sprout asked.

“Are we going to meet another main?”

“…not exactly,” Sam vaguely implied.

“I you should be on your best behavior, though. We’re going to be meeting up with Delilah, too.”

Sprout paused for a moment, before quickly catching up again with Sam.

“Delilah?” He asked.

“What are we going to see here for? I thought I had my last check. Is there something wrong?”

“Everything’s fine, sprout, calm down,” Sam said, rolling their eyes.

“We’re just meeting up.”

That didn’t help. Sprout still had some nerves, but it should be fine, right? He’d gone through all his checks, so he wouldn’t have to be remade again. Right?

The two stopped. There was Delilah.

“Hey sprout!” She said, grasping her ichor stained, gloved hands together, smiling that too wide smile that never really matched the coldness her eyes held.

“How are you? You’re settling in alright?”

“…I’m fine,” He said, refusing to take his eyes off her, like prey would a predator.

“Good! That’s good, I’m glad to hear that,” she replied.

“There’s someone I’d like you to meet. I’m starting off making the side characters, so I thought why not start off with your best friend?”

She didn’t mean…?

“Sprout, meet Cosmo.”

His gaze tore away from Delilah, looking at the pastry boy she’d stepped aside to reveal. He looked a bit nervous at this meeting.

“…hi, sprout.”

“…hi. Hi! Hello!”

After a moments hesitation, sprout quickly approached Cosmo.

“Hi! It’s so nice to finally meet you!” He beamed.

“…what do you mean?” Cosmo asked, tilting his head slightly.

“We’re best friends, we’ve met before. Shelly introduced us!”

“Right, I’ll explain that to you later,” sprout brushed off.

“You wanna go do something? You wanna bake something? Oh- actually I should probably introduce you to the others first!”

“Hehe, yeah, sure!” Cosmo giggled.

Sprout started to run off with Cosmo trailing behind, but stopped for a second once he left the room. He could vaguely hear Sam and Delilah talking.

“And you’re sure everything’s going to be ok?”

“He’ll be fine. Sprouts a leader, it’s lot like he’ll become dependent on him.”

“Hey, are we going or what?” Cosmo coaxed.

Sprout hesitated for only a moment longer before smiling.

“Yeah, let’s go!”

——————————————————

Cosmo and sprout found themselves sitting in the tree in the lobby. Sprout had encouraged Cosmo to climb up so they could see the stars.

“So, you’re telling me I wasn’t alive until, like, three days ago?” Cosmo asked.

“Yep,” sprout said.

“The memories you have aren’t real, it’s from a TV show we’re from, called dandy’s world. Every toon has them.”

“…that’s so weird, so we just remember stuff that never happened?” Cosmo said, with. Slightly concerned look on his face.

“…so, are we, friends?”

“I mean, we just spent an entire afternoon together, clearly we bond well,” Sprout reasoned.

“True,” Cosmo said.

“Well, all in all it’s pretty nice to finally be hanging out with you then!”

“Yeah, I could say the same here!” Sprout replied cheerfully.

A comfortable silence settled over the two. Sprout got lost in thought for a bit as he stared up through the leaves at the stars above.

Nothing seemed wrong with Cosmo. No breathing issues, he can walk fine, he can talk. That’s good. He wouldn’t have to be remade. He was safe. It’s a bit odd how he was already so worried about him. They’d never even met before today. But they still knew each other for what felt like years. Those false memories really screwed with his head, maybe he shouldn’t think about it so much.

“…hey, cos-“

He paused. Cosmo fell asleep against the tree branch. Cute. But also probably pretty dangerous. He picked up Cosmo, and started climbing down the tree with him. Once he reached the bottom, he sat Cosmo at the base of the tree, since he probably didn’t have a toon room yet. He sat down next to him, and let his mind wander a bit.

…it was, oddly comforting, to be here. To just, exist, in this moment. Just him and his “best friend”. Maybe they could actually be friends.
