Work Text:
To be fair, it wasn’t colt’s brightest idea.
Court was at work and the twins had the day off from school, so while Ryland was busy sticking his nose in a book or doing some other nerd stuff, Colt thought he would try baking weed brownies. Y’know normal ‘rebellious teen’ stuff -at least as far as Colt was aware .
There was just one major oversight in his master plan (plans were more Ryland’s thing anyway) and that was his twin pattering into the kitchen, obviously hungry, and seeing freshly baked brownies and taking them for a ‘study snack’.
That was how he got here: a red-eyed, highly emotional Ryland, anxiously grabbing at Colt’s sleeve, sprawled on the couch as Colt held his head in his hands next to him “shit… Court’s gonna kill me.”
Ryland giggled from his spot on the couch “whaddya mean Colt, Court would never do something like that”
“Figure of speech, Ry,” Colt sighed preparing to say goodbye to social media for the next like… month
That’s when a new master plan struck him, this one was a certified Colt Grace special; “c’mon Ry how about we get you to bed” before Ryland can even answer he’s already being supported with an arm around his shoulders and guided up the stairs on shaky legs, yeah there was no way court was seeing his baby brother like this.
Stumbling up the stairs and into the twins shared room, Colt lay Ryland down in his bed; under glow in the dark stars arranged into some constellations Ryland had rambled on about before. Pulling the sheets tight under his twins chin with a careful grace, Ryland mumbled something Colt had to lean in closer to hear,
“Colt is it just me or is the sky falling?”
“Just you, Ry,” Colt chuckled “Now, if you go to sleep I’ll be a very happy man…”
After a little back and forth, Colt was finally satisfied Ryland wouldn’t be going anywhere- and just in time as a second later he heard the rattle of keys in the door
“Boys? I’m home. Colt have you done your homework?”
Colt inched the door to the twins’ room closed, throwing a final shushing motion at Ryland on his way out. Then he waddled down the stairs, ready to put on the performance of a lifetime.
“Heyyy Court, I missed you, how was work” Colt breathed through an anxious smile
“You’re acting odd is everything alright… and where the hell is Ryland?” Courtland gave a skeptical look
“ oh yeah yeah umm… Ry said he was doing practice tests and not to bother him, but I’ll bring dinner to his fortress of solitude once it’s ready!”
Colt moved into the kitchen, ready to help Court prepare dinner when he saw it, the empty brownie tray with crumbs left behind… shit.
Colt ran ahead into the kitchen scrambling to throw a cloth over the dish, praying Court didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary.
One successful ruse, a few insistent ‘everything’s fine court you worry too much’es and subtly moving a covered tray out of the kitchen later, dinner was on the stove and Colt sat in the kitchen watching court cook
The smell of food wafted through the house, wrapping Colt in a brief sense of domestic comfort and washing away the anxiety his twin always seemed to bring with him. Until a rattling sounded through the kitchen and in the doorway, clutching the door for support and rubbing at a bloodshot eye with his other hand stood Ryland
“Sorry… I’m starving”
Colt’s heart plummeted to his feet, court was absolutely *not* going to be amused.
