The Storm

Summary:

The ocean was a part of her—it had made sure of that, in the way that it stained her skin with hints of blue and green and teal, and in the way that it was etched into her skin like scars that ached whenever it rained and glowed whenever she used her powers.

It lived in her, now—in her mind, in her memories, in her heart, in her lungs.

OR: Nya doesn’t have the best time, nor does she have the best relationship with the sea

Work Text:

Nya wasn’t scared of the sea.

She was the elemental master of water, that would be ridiculous.

It was as if the stars had decided that either she was part of it or it was part of her.

Sometimes it would whisper to her, beg her to come back. Other times it would scream, roaring and gnashing like a wild animal.

Then, sometimes, it was painfully silent. And she was alone.

(Nya did not like being alone. Alone meant she was on her own, with her thoughts. Her thoughts weren’t always very nice.)

Hello again, Auwai.

Nya froze, her head snapping up and every muscle in her body tensing as she took in a sharp breath.

The voice wasn’t really a voice. It didn’t make a sound to anything but it’s puppets, and it just couldn’t seem to accept that she wasn’t its anymore.

Her fingers curled, nails digging into the palms of her hands. “Get out of my head,” she scowled, voice shaking ever slightly.

Why did you leave?

“I—what?” She blinked. That…that hadn’t been what she was expecting. “You—I was trapped, I had to leave,”

You chose to become Endless, Auwai. You were whole; we were whole.

“I was trapped,” she repeated, but she knew that it was right. “And—and I had no choice, I had to Merge, I had to save my home, I—”

₩Ɇ ₩ɆⱤɆ ɎØ︎ɄⱤ ⱧØ︎₥Ɇ!

And it hurt. The scars pulsed a deep blue, and the water in her lungs suddenly felt there. She staggered back a step, hands flying to her throat as she sputtered and coughed, her body trying desperately to dry out her lungs.

Nya wasn’t in her room anymore.

She was on the edge of the sea.

It moved with her as she tried to breathe, the tide ebbing with each uneven breath.

You chose to be Endless. You were meant to stay Endless.

“That wasn’t a choice!” She snapped, and the sea rumbled. “I had to! Everyone would’ve died if I hadn’t!”

Everything was shaking.

Oh. She realized. It’s me. I’m the storm.

She closed her eyes for a moment, and took a step back. When she reopened her eyes, nothing had changed. She doesn’t know if she was expecting anything to.

“People are supposed to end,” she said quietly. “I was supposed to end,”

Nya didn’t let the sea respond.

She turned away from the water, closes her eyes, and reminded herself of where she really was.

Home.

No, Nya was not scared of the sea. She was angry with it. She wanted it to suffer the way she had suffered.

The sea should be scared of her.
