Work Text:
Looking up at her son, Jubilee wasn’t sure what to do next. Shogo had turned into a dragon about an hour ago, after lunch. He needed to go down for his nap, she knew. But there was no way she could get him inside for naptime when he was in his massive, scaly form.
“Shogo? Please? Turn back into a human for mama?!”
She was desperate at this point. The last time he missed nap time as a dragon, he started a small fire that Professor X had been very upset about.
Shogo tilted his head, tired and confused.
“Uhhhhh…” Jubilee panicked. “What if I told you a fun story?!”
He seemed to be alright with that, judging by how he settled down and curled up around her. She took that as a win, because you really do have to see the bright side in everything. Now to make up a story…
“Ok, so once upon a time, there was a little girl. This girl lived in a magical land full of stars. She walked between the fallen stars each day, hoping to find a way to glow as bright as they did.”
“The other people in the Land of Stars thought she was strange. They would say, ‘A human isn’t a star! She should have her feet on the ground and focus on being human like the rest of us.”
Shogo chirped a bit, curious. Jubilee kept going.
“But the girl knew she wasn’t like that. She wasn’t like everyone else. Maybe there was something about her that told others she wasn’t just a girl. Maybe that’s why they were so convinced that they had to tell her she was.”
“It’s hard to be different. You feel like there’s an invisible wall between you and others. So this girl stayed up all night, looking at the stars as they fell to the ground. But eventually, she found something weird.”
“One star kept falling, but never landed. It would swoop back up just before it hit the earth. And the girl knew what she had to do.”
“She followed this star and finally caught up with it. And when she came to the place where it almost touched the ground, she grabbed onto it.”
“It wobbled a bit under her body, but she clung on. Soon enough, she was riding the star. It took her higher than she had ever been, and she could see her town below her. And then the star spoke.”
“It said, ‘Why did you want to find me? I’m just another star in the sky. There’s nothing really special about me. I don’t even have the courage to land.’”
“The girl replied, ‘Do stars not want to land?’”
“‘All stars want to land and find a home,’ the star said. ‘Except for me. I don’t feel like being in one place. I want to travel, to see what the world has to offer.’”
“And the girl knew she had found someone who understood. They continued traveling until they couldn’t see the girl’s house anymore. That was ok. Something told the girl that she was finally home.”
Jubilee looked at her son. He was finally asleep. Still a dragon, but peaceful and content.
She took out her phone and texted her friend Kira. She had a feeling she was going to be sitting here until Shogo woke up.
But at least he was finally asleep.
