Off the Record

Summary:

Japan’s sweetheart is known for one thing: never losing her composure in front of a camera.

Pro-Hero Dynamite is known for the exact opposite.

After a PR disaster threatens his reputation and ranking, their agencies force them into a long-term collaboration meant to “improve his public image.” Interviews, photoshoots, charity events—all carefully staged appearances designed to convince the public they can tolerate each other.

Unfortunately, the public becomes obsessed with them instead.

Notes:

Such a random dynamic I've always wanted to see more of hehe I always wondered what Bakugou would be like with someone who is also extremely well-regarded and excellent but in a field outside of his own. Particularly, someone who excels in the field of entertainment!!

So excited for this story, it's been a while since I've written anything so I hope you guys like it!! Currently in recovery for a biopsy—not a big procedure, but I'm dramatic so I'm calling it recovery—and I've come face to face with my #1 source of comfort during times such as this which is none other than fictional characters.

It'll probably be that way for the rest of my life, but anyway, here is an incoming maybe 30+ chapters of Pro-Hero Bakugou falling for a celebrity reader!!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Trending Again

Chapter Text

The notorious pro-hero Dynamite is once again under scrutiny regarding his most recent public outburst during a rescue operation towards the paparazzi. While he is exceptional on the battlefield, others are starting to question his composure, and in turn, his overall professional capability. As Dynamite is, aside from being our nation’s #2 Pro-Hero, also a public figure….

Sato Hiroshi, the public relations manager of the hero agency Ground Zero, stares at the news reporter on the television with dead eyes, all hope drained from his 30 year old frame. A very bleak contrast to the evidently irritated—seething, almost—pro-hero right next to him, Bakugou Katsuki (also known as ‘Dynamite’), who just so happens to be the exact subject of the segment.

Heaving a sigh, Sato opened his mouth before quickly closing it as Japan’s #2 cut him off before he even got to start.

“No point showin’ me this shit, I don’t give a fuck what the public says. Somebody needed to put those bozos in their place. They were compromising the operation.” Bakugou snaps, already having known that his PR manager brought him over to smooth over his public image. He would feel bad for the guy, but fuck, all he actually cared about was doing his job, not becoming some sort of celebrity.

“Yes… I am aware of that Bakugou-san…” Sato starts carefully, already knowing his boss’ personality and therefore knowing better, “However, there has been a clear strain in your public image, that while the team is extremely confident in your combat skills, we are concerned that such a huge scandal at the start of the year can negatively impact your ranking.” he starts, taking in a breath before grabbing the remote to switch the channel.

“Ha? My job is to save people, not accommodate disrespectful assholes. This’ll blow over anyway, you don’t gotta worry about my ranking at all.” the blonde says, clearly displeased over the fact that his team really thought that this petty scandal would really affect his ranking, that while he does still find importance in his overall standing—believe me, he finds pride in himself for having maintained #2 for 5 years straight—everybody knows that he’s outgrown his previous attachment towards such matters. Prioritizing duty over other things.

“Yes, we are all confident it will blow over. But for what you can call safety measures, me and the others have received an interesting proposal from Amuse Inc., from which we will request assistance regarding the implementation of the uh… safety measures.” swallowing, Sato presses a button on the black plastic material, switching the channel from Reports on Pro-Heroes to What’s Trending? and he pointedly decides to ignore the confusion on Bakugou’s face, continuing his spiel towards the man with a raised eyebrow as he is preparing himself for the man’s impending disapproval.

Noticing his PR manager gesturing towards the television with a slight hesitance, Bakugou narrows his eyes momentarily, wondering exactly what the members of his agency are getting him into, as he looks at the screen before him.

Today on What’s Trending, we will be disclosing the rumored new movie starring Japan’s sweetheart, our untouchable media darling—” The screen flashes the face and name of a celebrity that has been the current talk of the town, having been constantly trending for a few years now with popularity so large to the point that even the very offline and very inactive Bakugou knows who the woman on screen is.

The showbiz reporter continues, “We hear that this actress will be paired with the handsome Tanaka Kenji with sneak peaks from behind the scenes—” before Bakugou turns his attention away from her and back onto his nervous PR manager.

“Get to the damn point, why the hell am I watching this shit?" the pro-hero asks, brows furrowed, already impatient.

Doing a preparatory cough, Sato takes another short breath in before he finally says what he came here to say. “I am sure you are familiar with the lady on screen. She is known for being impossibly composed in public, always sharp in interviews, always having the perfect smile—overall a media expert! The complete opposite of you, Bakugou-san, no offense.” he starts.

“None taken, but why the hell are you telling me this? She’s a celebrity, they’re all fake. Like damn robots. Of course she’s media trained.” Bakugou retorts, clearly annoyed. Though, he really only wanted to insert his little dig into celebrities—people he has always had a particular dislike towards—before letting Sato continue.

“Yes, you two are extremely different. So would you believe how surprised me and the team were when her agency reached out to us for a long-term collaboration!” For the first time in this one-on-one meeting, Sato looked happy. He was a fan of the celebrity, but also, he couldn’t wait to see all the good this collaboration could bring for his boss that while he is terrified of, he still deeply respects and wishes to prosper.

Bakugou on the other hand looks hardly pleased with his brows creasing even more and eyes widening.

“What the fuck did you just say!?” he barks.

A normal person would flinch, but Sato had expected this (and is also used to it). “Don’t worry, we were very explicit regarding the fact that hero work will always come first for you! You two will only have joint interviews, magazine shoots, charity appearances—they actually even said that you could possibly have a cameo in her upcoming movie with Tanaka Kenji—”

“Like hell I will!”

The blonde in front of him is clearly outraged and frustrated, but Sato knows that his boss is just sort of… ephemerally angry… but eventually comes to reason even for PR matters that he usually deems unreasonable, petty, useless, and whatnot. Only hoping that this time, it’ll take around only 30 minutes maximum before Bakugou agrees to go through with it.

Somewhere else in the city of Musutafu, you are also called into a meeting. Eating your lunch which was really just a clubhouse sandwich your assistant had picked up earlier.

Having just arrived from a photoshoot, your hair still bore the scent of hairspray (a smell you admittedly disliked but soon had to grow used to), face still laden with makeup—you had a blue eyeshadow and nude lipstick on, a look the makeup artist described as ‘editorial’—and mind already somewhat exhausted despite it only being noon.

Your PR manager, Watanabe Ema, stood in front of you with a big smile on her face and you quickly braced yourself for either something really good or something really bad—you could never tell which of the two it was going to be, and with your gut being uneasy, you were not too confident on it being the former.

Taking another bite of your sandwich, she pulled out a list of questions which you assume is for an interview. At this, you feel relief, thinking that was it, however, Watanabe’s face says otherwise as her smile persists, telling you that there must be a lot more.

“So, tomorrow, you’ll be having an interview with Phenomenon and those are the questions. I’m confident that you will prepare for it well, yes?” She asks and you let yourself nod, knowing that you have no choice but to comply.

Watanabe starts, “Now for next week…” from this you quickly think to yourself that whatever she is going to say next is exactly what is making your gut feel uneasy.

“...you will be holding a press conference with no one other than pro-hero Dynamite! Our two agencies have agreed to a long-term collaboration—this will be great for your image, knowing that he is rather… rugged? Rough? Anyway! That’s perfect for your upcoming movie with Tanaka Kenji with your character there being a lot more angsty than your previous roles.” she says, smiling at you, her round silver frames falling down her nose from how excited she is, “What do you think?”

Pausing, you already knew that there was no way this was going to be enjoyable. Dynamite, while you aren’t entirely familiar with him, you’ve heard through the grapevine that he is 1) really hot, 2) extremely hard to work with. Not that you’re surprised as the pro-hero does not conceal his explosive temper at all and appears in constant scandals. This is also probably why he’s a paparazzi magnet because the more people talk, the more money they get. Either way, all you see is a guy whose hero work has been overshadowed by his inability to behave like a normal person on camera.

And now you have to work with him, great!

But what comes out of your mouth is, “That sounds great, I’m excited to see how this’ll go!” you say with a practiced smile, knowing better than to complain about something that as far as you know, is already set in stone. Though, you let yourself show a little concern, awkwardly laughing a little before asking “What does Dynamite think about this, though?”

Watanabe sees your eyebrows turned upward in concern and quickly finds herself looking anywhere but your eyes, laughing awkwardly as well because even though she doesn’t explicitly know your thoughts on the man, she already has a clue as you both are already aware of his current reputation.

“I’m sure he is just as excited! He is a professional, after all. I’m sure he knows that this opportunity will be great for his image.” is all Watanabe says. Is the first part something she made up? Yeah. But is the second part something she knows Dynamite’s PR team is extremely aware of and therefore will result in the pro-hero agreeing to the collaboration anyway? Yeah.

To that, you only nod. Silently sighing to yourself and only hoping that you don’t get killed in the aftermath of all of this.

Later that night, the collaboration was revealed to the public and quickly caught the eyes of several netizens as two popular and familiar faces from different fields coming together unexpectedly. The onslaught of reactions and opinions springing up from the sudden partnership giving exactly both agencies what they were looking for: attention.
