Work Text:

Tango woke up with a backache.

It's not an unbearable pain that he should worry about.

He thought he had just slept awkwardly, and ended up waking up like this.

He thought he shouldn't worry about it.

So his day quickly began.

He got dressed, had coffee, and left to go back to building Desk Out 3.

As he was finishing building the outside, Impulse appeared.

He would usually show up to check if Tango wasn't overexerting himself.

"Tango! There you are!"

Impulse lands right behind Tango.

Tango makes a small noise as he turns to Impulse; his back still ached quite a bit, and moving his body only makes it hurt more.

However, this noise does not go unnoticed by Impulse.

"Are you okay? You seem to be in pain."

Impulse makes a worried face and extends a hand in case something happens.

"Yes, I'm fine, I just slept awkwardly and now I'm suffering the consequences."

Tango makes a slight grimace of pain when he moves again.

"Well, let me see, maybe I can find where it hurts."

Impulse doesn't even wait for Tango's response and quickly moves to Tango's back.

Tango tries to push him away at first, but knows he can't pick a fight with Impulse right now, so he ends up letting him go.

As he groped Tango's back, Impulse felt a slight bulge on his hand.

"Tango, I found something here, I don't know what it is, probably the reason for your pain, but I'll have to lift your shirt, okay?"

This time Impulse awaits Tango's response. Impulse is very concerned about consent, especially when it involves removing someone's clothes.

"Yes, sure, go ahead, it's not like there's going to be anything amazing there."

With his consent, Impulse lifts Tango's shirt, just the back, enough to see what's there.

Impulse's hands disappear when the shirt is already fully lifted. Tango expected the hands to reappear to check more closely, but they didn't.

"Impulse?"

Tango turned his head to look at him.

Impulse looked shocked and frightened, his hands still suspended in the air as if he were paralyzed.

His reaction definitely scared Tango; what else could it be about him?

"Impulse, what's on my back?"

Tango was now looking Impulse in the eye.

"Uh... well... how... how can I explain this to you?"

Impulse was moving her hands anxiously and looked like she was sweating.

"Impulse, you're scaring me, just say it already!"

Tanfo was now on the verge of a breakdown. Why on earth was his friend so nervous? What was behind him?

"Tango... since when do you have wings?"

"Impulse, I don't have wings"

"Well... now you have it."

Impulse's nervousness was now fading, but Tango's was only increasing.

"What? Are you kidding me? Is this some kind of joke, whatever it is..."

"No, it's not! I swear to you! You have wings now! Orange wings!"

"I need to see it, now"

Tango tried to turn his head enough to see, but his head wouldn't rotate 360°.

"Here, let me take a picture."

Impulse flips Tango over, grabs the communicator, and takes a picture.

The moment Tango heard the click indicating the photo had been taken, he quickly grabbed Impulse's communicator.

And there it was, beautiful orange wings, still growing, that was probably the reason for the pain.

Now Tango definitely felt like he was going to faint, his heart was beating too fast, his hands were sweating.

"Tango, you need to stay calm, come on, follow my breath."

Impulse took the communicator from Tango's hand and grabbed his shoulders, making him look at him.

Tango was really trying to stay calm, but he couldn't. How could he? His whole life he thought he was a complete blaze, only to get here and start sprouting wings.

Tango looked back at Impulse, who was trying to get him to follow his breathing.

When Tango calmed down, Impulse sat him down on a large rock that was there.

I was thinking about who to call. Impulse doesn't have wings, he doesn't know anything about wings. He had already fixed Skizz's wings, but that's all; he doesn't know anything else about the subject.

Grian

The answer hit him hard; Grian has wings, he understands wings better than anyone.

Impulse quickly grabbed his communicator again to message Grian.

Impulse > Grian

Impulse > Is it busy?

Impulse > It's urgent.

Impulse > Please reply

Grian > Hi Impulse!

Grian > No, I'm not busy.

Grian > What happened?

Impulse > Can you come to the entrance of Decket Out 3?

Impulse > Can you come quickly?

Grian > I'll be there in 5 minutes.

Impulse now stared at Tango while waiting for Grian, making sure he wouldn't have another panic attack.

Grian appeared sooner than expected; had 5 minutes really already passed?

"Okay, I'm here, what's up?"

Grian lands beside Impulso, alternating his gaze between Tango and Impulse.

Impulse approaches Tango and pulls him by the hand, bringing him to where Grian is. He turns Tango around and lifts his shirt again just enough to reveal his wings.

"That"

"Oh, Tango, I didn't know you had wings!"

"I didn't have wings until yesterday..."

Grian looks at Tango, startled and perhaps a little surprised as well.

"That's why I called you, I don't know anything about wings."

Grian looked back at Impulse as he spoke.

"Wait, these wings just appeared out of nowhere, overnight? Just like that?"

Grian was so confused; normally wings started growing when they were babies, but Tango, besides being Blaze, shouldn't have wings only appear now.

"It's not exactly out of nowhere... my mother was a bird, but my father was a blaze, I inherited everything from my father, everyone thought I was a complete blaze, even I thought so, I didn't know that wings would grow now."

Grian is now a little less confused; he can understand a bit more now.

"But even so, wings grow when they are still babies; their wings should have grown a long time ago, not just now."

"But then, what do we do now?"

Impulse lets go of Tango's t-shirt, letting it fall to his back.

"Tango may have had a delay in developing his poultry traits; perhaps that part of him is only manifesting now, that's the only explanation for it."

"But that's not the point, how am I supposed to live with this now?! I've never had wings in my life, I don't know how to live with this?!"

Tango now turned to confront Grian.

Grian simply gave him a kind smile.

"Tango, those wings have always been there, they just decided to appear now. You've always lived with them, and besides, it's not difficult to live with them, you learn quickly. I'll help you, you won't have to learn on your own"

Tango was so confused, scared, so many emotions at once.

"Let's go inside for a bit, it's getting cold in here."

Impulse was getting ready to fly, waiting for Tango when he was ready too.

"I think... I think I'd rather walk this time... I need to think a bit, I'll get back to you guys later."

Impulse and Grian soon left, leaving Tango alone there with his thoughts.

He needed to leave quickly, think a little, besides, it would be a long walk.

I was inspired by a Captain_Blue fanfic that I found amazing and I had an idea, nothing more :)
