But love can make us suck less

Summary:

Octavian realises that he doesn't need much to be happy, just his friends.

Work Text:

Octavian basked in the rare December sun as he drank his slushie. Reyna sat next to him, drinking a chocolate milkshake that she’d insisted on buying with her own money. Jason, being a hyperactive ten year old, was running in circles around them. Literally. At some point, he’s taken off his t-shirt, which didn’t surprise Octavian considering how long it’d taken to convince Jason to put on a t-shirt in the first place. It was near freezing outside, but that didn’t bother Jason one bit.

Reyna rested her head against Octavian’s shoulder, sneakily reaching over to take a sip of Octavian’s red slushie. He noticed. He didn’t say anything. He’d already given up his large winter coat for her as she’d grown out of her jacket from last winter. He was always quite warm anyway, being a legacy of Apollo. Jason made some kind of teasing remark as he stopped running, moving his focus to Reyna and Octavian who were practically cuddling on the bench. Octavian didn’t hear him properly, only hearing his heartbeat in his ears as his face reddened deeply. He could probably pass that off as being cold, though. After running around for a while longer, Jason became tired, climbing onto Octavian’s lap and promptly falling asleep.

Octavian looked at both of his friends, and he thought that this was definitely the best birthday he’d ever had.
