★ HOUSEBROKEN ★ (HIATUS)

Summary:

South Dakota, out of her siblings, has always been the carefree one with no problems. No matter what happened.
Everything that happened to North Dakota.
Everything that happened to Washington.
Everything that happened to Montana.
None of it mattered. And why should it matter?

She'd wait it all out. Like she always did.
But waiting became the worst option every single time.

(name is from the comic book FERAL, where there is a chapter called Housebroken.)

Chapter Text

I sunk further into my bed, tired of arguing with North Dakota over something so stupid. "For the last time... Montana isn't pregnant. She's just chubby. What is up with you and that claim?!" I whimpered.

My sister only laughed. Clearly she found the accusation funny. "What? No!! Clearly she's pregnant. She acts like it too." North Dakota snickered. She was so dumb sometimes.

And then the devil herself piped up from her bed. "What are you guys saying about me?..." She asked, her voice laced with a snarl that scared both me and my twin. North Dakota shut up.

South Dakota, I told myself. You'll get used to this.

Montana usually didn't share a room with us, but of course Mr. America himself had something to do, and he asked her to give up her room for a few days. She had been sleeping on the floor of our room for a few days since North Dakota was a bitch and wouldn't just sleep up here with me. I don't even kick in my sleep, she's making things up.

"... Sorry," my sister mumbled to Montana under her breath, trying to make herself invisible.

"You better be," The Treasure State spat, before curling up in the mountain of blankets on the floor.

I tried to close my eyes. I did not want to face the wrath of my sisters fighting. Finally, when I felt the dreamworld take over my vision, I let it take me there.

"YOU CHEATED!!!"

Huh..? What in the world...

"I DID NOT!" Ohio snapped, and I looked down from my bunk of the bed, my tail curling to my side and over the ledge, thumping against the hard black metal. There was North Dakota and Ohio, playing a game of UNO. I had absolutely no idea why North Dakota was so mad over it.

"You can't stack a plus four on top of a plus two! That's not how it works!" My twin whimpered. I wasn't very bothered. I looked on the floor by the bed, seeing Montana was no longer there. Not surprising. I would've rushed to get up too if I slept on the floor.

"Why are you guys fighting over a stupid card game?..." I yawned, using the pole around my bed to stretch out my sore limbs.

They both looked up at me, and they smirked at me before bursting out laughing.

"Oh my GOD SD! You look like shit!" North Dakota snickered, pointing at me with a finger. I flipped her off and got out of my bed.

Ohio, evermore disrespectful, followed in my sister's footsteps. "Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?"

In a rush I walked out of the room and slammed the door on both of them, going to the living room. God, there were so many times I wished I could just wring my sister's neck. Not like I actually would; I love her and she loves me.

... Kind of.

A hollering of laughter disturbed me. My gaze quickly turned to Wyoming and Idaho, who were currently laughing over something that was unidentifiable to me. Ignoring them, I took a seat on the couch.

"You look pretty today," someone next to me said. I jumped, startled, but then realized it was just Missouri.

"Really? My sister said I looked like shit," I huffed.

Missouri fumbled. "Ah- don't listen to her, she always has a stick up her ass anyways." She pulled me closer against her, then whispered in my ear, “I bet I could make you forget all about her~”

I pushed her away, but I giggled as I did so. “Now you’re just playing dirty.”

“Ew, get a room.” Hawaii said on the other side of the living room, her face full of disgust and some other emotion I couldn't exactly place. She was always really unpredictable.

“Sorry,” I softly mumbled. Missouri, however, smirked at Hawaii, pushing herself up from the couch and sauntering over to her, “what are you gonna do about it?”

The Aloha State’s face lit up with a slight tint of anger, stepping back from Missouri just in case she was about to do something. As soon as I realized, I ran over to Missouri and pulled her back from Hawaii.

“Let's not…” I told Missouri, then spun around to push her in the opposite direction. She rolled her eyes but then walked towards the kitchen to get a snack. Hawaii snickered. “Girl, you gotta control that woman!”

A small chuckle came from me, “hah… I guess I do…”

She came over to me, patting me on the shoulder before leaving. I sighed out of relief, before hearing a noise just below my waistline, “meow!”

Ozzy. The cat. She rubbed against my legs, her smooth fur gently scraping against the fabric of my jeans. I laughed, picking her up in my arms. She was my brother’s cat; well trained and such. She purred as I held her.

“Awe, who's a good kitty!” I chirped, scratching Ozzy under her chin, watching her close her eyes. Ozzy was a name I loved. Ozzy. It was fun to say. But speaking of the devil, Washington was right behind me.

“Having fun with my cat, eh? She’s always been a traitor,” he giggled. I nodded. “Well, she's a good cat anyways.”

Slowly, he took the cat out of my grasp, putting her on part of the counter where her food bowl was so Jet didn't get to it instead. She immediately nuzzled his hand, and he pet her on the head. Idaho watched from a distance for a split moment then went over to Washington. “She not hungry?”

“Ehh, she's hungry when she wants to be,” Washington laughed, shoving Idaho with a hand. Idaho roughly shoved him back. Then Washington maneuvered to get him in a head-lock, and I watched him gasp and squirm out of my brother’s grasp.

“I’m gonna-” Idaho growled, before getting cut off by the shadow behind me. “You guys… why do you always do this?”

Montana’s voice cut through my brother-in-law and my actual brother’s wrestling, and they immediately let go of each other, Idaho earning a soft kick from Washington on his ankle. “Sorry babe,” Idaho huffed, however going over to Montana and leaning up to kiss her. Washington revolted, “eewww!! Disgusting!!”

I decided rather to just let Washington deal with Montana and Idaho; if he’d do anything anyways. Quietly, I snuck back to my room and closed the door behind me, realizing my sister wasn't in the room with me.

This was a good life.

I’d never trade it for anything.

At least, I thought I wouldn't ever.

South Dakota, I once again told myself. You wouldn't trade it for the world.

Notes:

First actual full on chapter fic here lol

This chapter doesn't showcase most of the things that happen later on. Most things in this book will also not be HISTORICAL.

Most events that happen to South Dakota are modern
Only one chapter actually goes more into her past when she was a younger state however it goes past world wars and other important events. Mainly focused after the civil war during the reconstruction era.

South Dakota, while being the main character, will not always be the one in the desperate situation. Montana is a good example. Something bad will happen.
