Info Dump

Summary:

I wrote this info dump because I was hit with an idea that I really like. But, this is not necessary to read at all, it is just for if someone wants context for the world this is in!

So if you want world building then boy do I have a lot to tell you…

Edit: This was originally a chapter from Thirteen Reasons to Kill that was uploaded awhile ago.

Work Text:

Abilities/Quirks

Quirks are genetic mutations of Abilities. Although they are weaker, they are still superpowers and are powerful in masses. Because of this, Ability users are often undermined and even forgotten because of how common powers are. To the point that history books that mention Abilities often consider them myth. And those that think that ability users are/were real are often called conspiracy theorists or people investigating the origin of quirks.

Quirks have a different name in Yokohama than in Japan. In Japan, they are called: Quirks. And in Yokohama they are called Mutations because of research done by Ability users. Since worldwide these gifts are called different things it isn’t too out of the ordinary but since the countries are close together and speak the same language, one would think that they would call it the same thing. But they really couldn’t be more different.

And those that are well aware of Ability users are now only those secluded in Ability organizations, which are often labeled as cults. But that is not a welcomely statement to say in, I don’t know, Yokohama? Where ability users thrive and are known? Where Quirkless work without discrimination? No, that would be a terrible idea.

Yokohama

Yokohama is a special case, it always has. It broke off from Japan in an oddly peaceful fashion unlike many. The reason for removing themself from Japan was that ability users were in a way underminded and thus invisible to the government, even after many protests. So many of them banded together with many nonability users, and broke away from Japan to make a government on their own.

Japan and Yokohama was a big shock world wide at the time since it had been a while since any countries broke off. And this was all around the early 2010s, and at the time, Yokohama became a very popular topic and many assumptions were made about the new country.

Such as and not limited to:
“Yokohama has a high crime rate.”
“The government is unorganized and corrupt.”
“They have some of the best fish in the world!”
“Yokohama is a rather beautiful place to live.”

These assumptions ran wild throughout the world before Yokohama declared that they would close their borders for an unknown amount of time. Then the rumors about the place became much harsher and negative until the split state became old news.

The reasons why the borders were closed is that there was an influx of foreign terrorists and many internal issues the government was fixing like making an alliance with the then Port Mafia. The amount of complex issues needed to be solved caused the border to be closed for around a decade. And since they closed their borders for so long many people didn’t want to go there and the few that did either needed a place to hide or came out of curiosity.

Oddly enough, as if Yokohama could not get any weirder; the streets are silent and menacing. As if they knew that a single word could get them all killed.

Hero Culture

Hero culture spawned when people needed a more elite version of the police to deal with all the new superpowered criminals. And when the government said that they were working on it. People got anxious, "What if I get killed because of this shit?” So, some people in costumes took up that job even though that had been, well, illegal. But because of huge public approval the government decided to legalize heroism.

And from that country to another the idea spread and laws around quirk use formed. But, Heroes were at this point only government workers nothing more nothing less. Til Mustafu made them idols.

Mustafu

Mustafu is known for two things. One: UA the only hero school in the world and Two: For being the beating heart of hero culture and hero idolization. They treat heroes as idols more than many but at this rate the trend is spreading to more cities close by. So, really, their idols may be more normalized soon.

Otaku culture along with Hero culture has been widely accepted despite all of that Mustafu is not widely acknowledged and is called “a forgettable city” to visit. So, besides the heroes, people really don’t care much for the city itself and it shows.

Notes:

Most of this is just politics about the world and history. I had fun writing it even though it sounds a lot like a lecture. But I hope you all enjoyed this chapter and I hope you have a good day/night!
