Let Love Shine Upon Us

Summary:

"He would never call him kind though. He made that mistake once and the agonised expression he was met with was almost enough for him to vow to never utter that word ever again. He wasn't sure why he was affected so deeply, and he didn't want to pry, so he apologised. Life went on for both of them.

In their world many questions went unanswered. They were walking on a fragile piece of ice that was bound to break every moment, but somehow it always stayed whole. Peace was a delicate affair. "

Chapter 1: enchanted

Chapter Text

When he slithered up the wall, he did not expect to see an angel looking into the distance. Even less so, he did not expect to see a guardian angel without a weapon to guide the garden with. He let his form change, let the scales disappear, let the forked tongue merge, and let his hair loose. His hair was the one thing She had let him keep after he fell. He was still wondering why, but he did not want to raise any more questions (though he did wonder what more She could possibly do to him).

"That one went down like a lead balloon."

"Sorry?"

"I said that one went down like a lead balloon", he enunciated a little more.

Afterwards they talked of Adam and Eve, of flaming swords, or lack thereof, and of Her. The angel was glowing with heavenly light, while he watched Adam fight off a lion with the flaming sword.

"What are you going to do for the rest of the day?"

"Probably just going to watch over them, make sure that they are safe and sound.", said the angel with a pinch of salt in his voice.

"Why don't I join you? It must be lonely being the only celestial being around and all that."

So the angel accepted the offer. Then he went on explaining why She was doing it to them and why they had sinned. Why what they did was going to have to plague humanity for the rest of their existence. He turned to his companion and smiled sadly saying, "I don't have to explain sin to you though, do I?"

"No, I suppose you don't," and with that they fell into a silence neither of them could say was uncomfortable.

In his head that one angry voice was shouting that She was going to punish them, just as She had punished him. He must have furrowed his brow, as the angel asked whether he was alright. He looked at him and nodded, tears covering his yellow eyes. It was the first time he wanted to tell the full truth and shout from his lungs that no, not everything was alright. He felt so much love for Her still, he wished to be forgiven. Begged to be allowed back into Her embrace. Dreamed of being able to feel Her, but She denied him.

So the angel just told him that it was okay. That things were going to fall back into place. That whatever was bothering him couldn't possibly hurt him. This sweet tale of the angel's words quietened the voice and reduced it to something barely above a murmur in the back of his mind.

The angel spoke of divine will, and how She knew how to steer humanity into the right direction, even if that meant that a certain serpent had to intervene in the Beginning.

And so, the first day of the rest of the world was coming to an end, and as the angel was worrying over the Adam and Eve, the serpent of Eden worried over how enchanted he was with him.
