Work Text:

Clouds shrouded the night sky as the steady ticking of the clock filled the bedroom’s quiet stillness.

Amy was getting ready for bed, dressed in her comfy knee-length nightgown and fluffy white socks. She set a glass of water on her bedside table as she pulled back her blanket, cozy and inviting in the dim light from her lamp.

Just as she was about to climb into bed, a sound stopped her.

Knocking.

But not from her door. It sounded like someone tapping on… glass?

Her attention shifted to her window when another series of light taps followed, confirming her suspicion.

Amy slowly walked over and drew back the curtains.

She gasped.

Before her was none other than her beloved Sonic. Though, he wasn’t his usual self. In place of his familiar blue fur, a brilliant gold shimmered around him, bathing her bedroom in a light like no other.

She pushed the glass up, opening the window and letting the cool night breeze in.

“Oh, good. You’re still up.” He said, breaking into a grin.

Amy, still in disbelief, stared at him in awe. “Sonic…? What’re you doing here?”

He hovered a little closer, propping his forearms on the windowsill and leaning into them. His crimson eyes sent a rush of warmth up her cheeks.

“Just felt like flying around a bit, so I used patrolling the area as an excuse to get the Emeralds.” He gave a small shrug. “But I got bored pretty quick.”

Amy’s smile grew smug, “So you came to bother me instead?”

“Yup, pretty much.” Sonic chuckled.

There was something a little different about him tonight— Amy noticed his usual cocky playfulness didn’t quite feel as strong as it normally did. Something about him seemed gentler.

Even his golden glow, usually piercing in battle, was now a quiet, steady light.

His gaze fell to her attire. “You were about to head to sleep, huh?”

Amy blinked, suddenly remembering the warm bed waiting behind her. “Yeah…” She mumbled.

The moment the word left her mouth, regret tugged at her chest as Sonic slowly began to back away from the window.

“Well, I better let you get to it, then.”

As he turned to fly off, Amy suddenly called out. “Wait!”

Sonic paused midair and looked back at her.

Amy smiled up at him. “I don’t mind staying up a little longer.”

His face lit up. With a quiet laugh, he extended his hand to her. “In that case, come with me. I wanna show you something cool.”

As Amy placed her hand into his, a spark of his Super energy suddenly ran through her, sending a small shiver up her spine. She gasped softly as her feet slowly lifted off the floor.

Sonic carefully pulled her through the window. “Pretty neat, right?”

Amy nodded quickly, eyes bright with excitement. In her enthusiasm, she accidentally let go of his hand and immediately started to lose her hovering ability. She gave a small yelp as she dipped downward, but Sonic caught her just in time.

“Uh… maybe I should just carry you for now.”

Amy let out an embarrassed little laugh. “Yeah, I think that’s a good idea.”

Sonic wrapped his arms beneath her and lifted her to his chest. With a quick wink, he soared upward, carrying her towards the blanket of clouds above.

As they flew higher and higher, Sonic glanced at Amy. “You might wanna close your eyes.”

“Huh?”

“Just trust me.”

She nodded and did as he instructed.

The air grew colder the longer they flew, a slight chill brushing against her skin. She wondered how much time had passed, as it felt like they’d been flying for a while now. Curiosity brewed inside her as she tried to imagine what Sonic could possibly want her to see.

“Alright, we’re here.”

They finally came to a stop. Sonic slowly lowered Amy’s legs, though he kept a steady grip on her hand this time.

“You can look now.”

Amy pried her eyes open. Looking down, she saw the clouds that had once been miles above her now drifting right beneath her feet. “Woah..” She breathed, giving the gray puffs a playful little kick.

Sonic chuckled, lightly shaking his head. Gently, he hooked his finger under her chin and lifted her face towards his. With a little tilt of his head, he gestured for Amy to look to her right.

She followed, and her eyes widened.

The full moon hung enormous before them, glowing brightly against the night sky. It felt almost within reach, as if she could simply reach out a hand and touch its illuminated surface. Its light spilled across the darkness, accompanied by its glittering star friends.

Sonic watched warmly as Amy stared at the view, her jade orbs glistening like gems in the moon’s reflection.

She turned to him, wearing a wide grin, “How’d you know there’d be a full moon? It was cloudy all night.”

Sonic rubbed the back of his head.

“Well, someone I know has a weird obsession with the sky,” he said with a playful eyeroll, “so I flew over the clouds while on my patrol to check for anything interesting. And whaddya know…”

He spread an arm towards the moon, “Something interesting! Figured I had to show you.”

“It’s gorgeous…”

They both watched in comfortable silence, taking in the moon’s wonder a little longer.

Amy glanced over at Sonic. Moonlight traced across his features as he gazed at the sky, its silver luster mingling with his golden radiance, turning him into something luminous against the dark. The midnight breeze swept through his upturned quills, stirring their glowing tips like ripples of gold.

He looked like he belonged among the stars.

Her heart jumped. A sudden impulse tugged at her.

Amy suddenly lifted their hands above her head and twirled beneath them, careful not to let go. Her nightgown fluttered around her as she spun weightlessly through the air, laughter escaping her lips.

“...What’re you doing?” Sonic asked, raising a brow.

“Dancing!” she replied brightly.

“Out here?”

She gave his hand a tug, urging him closer.

“Why not?” Amy beamed, a twinkle in her eyes. “We’re floating above the clouds in front of a giant full moon! This feels exactly like the kind of moment you’re supposed to dance in.”

Sonic stared at her for a moment, before huffing out an amused snicker as he spun her once more under his arm.

“You’re really weird, y’know that?”

“And yet, you came all the way up here to hang out with me anyway.”

Sonic smirked before drawing her in, one hand settling at her waist as his fingers interlocked with hers. “You got me there.”

With the moon as their spotlight and the clouds as their stage, they gently began to sway— spinning and twirling to a rhythm of their own. Their dance wasn’t perfect, not even close, but the joy and laughter shared between them made perfection feel unimportant.

There was no one else around to judge anyway. It was just the two of them, and an audience of stars.

As their short performance came to an end, the motion between them faded into stillness. Their noses were left mere inches apart, as if neither of them had quite decided to step away just yet.

Amy gazed into Sonic’s red eyes, the tenderness in them wrapping around her heart.

Sonic didn’t speak right away. He quietly watched her through half-lidded eyes. As though he wished he could keep this moment suspended among the stars forever.

Amy’s smile softened the longer he stared. Reaching up, she cradled his cheek in her palm before leaning forward and brushing a tender kiss against it.

Sonic blinked in surprise. A crooked, bashful grin slowly crept onto his face, faint pink glowed across his cheeks beneath the moonlight.

“Thank you, Sonic.” Amy whispered sleepily. Her voice began to melt with drowsiness as she curled closer, resting her head against his chest. “I had so much fun… yawn…  being a star with you tonight...”

A quiet snicker rumbled from him, soft as a lullaby against her ear. His arm drew around her a little more snugly as her grip began to slowly loosen.

“Yeah?” he murmured. “Good.”

He gingerly patted her head, soothing enough to make the heaviness in her eyelids impossible to resist.

Amy tried to stay awake a little longer, refusing to let the night end. But sleep was already beginning to pull her under as her eyes drifted closed.

Sonic looked down at her with a fond smile.

“Sweet dreams, Ames.”

Morning light filtered through the curtains.

Amy stirred awake and slowly sat upright in bed, blinking away the remnants of sleep. The recognizable sound of the ticking clock filling the emptiness.

She turned to the shut window, as though it had never opened.

Her heart flickered with a bittersweet disappointment. Had it really only been a dream? Had that night above the clouds never truly happened at all?

She sighed wistfully to herself, hugging her knees to her chest. Even if it had been a dream… it was the loveliest one she’d ever had.

Reaching for the glass on her bedside table, Amy suddenly froze.

A single rose rested in the water.

Its petals glowed crimson beneath the morning sunlight, homely and familiar, like a little piece of the night left behind just for her.

Amy giggled softly as she held it between her fingers.

Maybe she really had been a star for one night after all.
