Going home

Summary:

"So, O'Connell. What will you do when we get back to Cairo? Go to America?" Jonathan asked, trying to change the subject. But he regretted it when he saw the panic paint Evy's face.

Rick seemed surprised by the question and looked shyly at the sand. "Actually, I... Hm, want to stay," and turned to Evy with a hopeful look.
The woman approached him and said seriously, "Then stay with me, O'Connell. I mean, Rick." Rick smiled broadly when she corrected herself, "I've never felt anything like this for anyone before. I..." she rambled on as she watched Rick stand up and move closer.

Work Text:

Evelyn, Rick, and Jonathan left Hamunaptra exhausted, heading towards Cairo, but stopped to buy food and blankets from nearby merchants. Rick had some money in his pockets, and the Carnahans promised to pay him back, but he said it was no problem. He was more worried about Evelyn, who hadn't eaten anything since the previous night and had lost her robe.

So the three sat down and ate. Evy usually talked, but this time she focused on eating and drinking water while her brother and O'Connell told her how they managed to rescue her.

"As soon as we get to Cairo, I will call a doctor to check your injuries," Evy told the two of them. Jonathan was about to say that wouldn't be necessary, but she gave him a look she'd inherited from their mother and agreed. O'Connell tried to ignore the pain, but he knew a doctor was needed. Rick's chest had several cuts, and he had been thrown around multiple times by Imhotep.

"And you, Evelyn?" Rick asked. "Are you hurt?". Evelyn made a funny face and said no in the least convincing way possible. Jonathan was indignant. "Come on, old mum! You talk about our injuries but not yours?" and stood up to look for scratches on his sister's face or arms.

Evelyn looked at him and Rick, who was worried, and explained, "Oh! It's nothing serious. I hurt my knee when Imhotep threw us." She lifted her dress, showing her left knee. It was a small injury, but it would probably leave a scar.

It was then that she noticed she was showing her bare leg to Rick and pulled down her nightgown, embarrassed. O'Connell was blushing too, but smiled. "I'm glad you're okay." Evy smiled back, and Jonathan rolled his eyes but was smiling too.

"I feel the same way, Evy," said Rick, resting his forehead against hers before kissing her. Jonathan ventures to think that these two won't take long to get married and even give him a nephew or niece. O'Connell is a decent guy and his baby sister is happy, so he approves of their relationship. Although, their displays of affection are a bit too much.

"Come on, you two!" Jonathan called as he mounted his camel. "I want to get back to Cairo as quickly as possible and sleep for days." Rick and Evelyn mounted their camel, with Evelyn resting one arm on his waist, and rode with Jonathan towards home. And Rick knew that his home would be wherever Evelyn was.
