Chapter Text

The 360 stage was always chaos, but tonight felt especially bad.

Not bad for the fans, obviously. The stadium was alive in the way only BTS concerts ever were. Seventy thousand fans singing lyrics back at them beneath oceans of purple lights, colorful confetti still drifting slowly through the air from the last song of the first half while fireworks echoed faintly outside the venue roof. The members were all walking, running on adrenaline and exhaustion at the same time, which usually meant absolutely nobody behaved normally.

Jungkook was already on his second water bottle of the night, chasing Jimin across the stage while laughing so hard he could barely stay upright. Taehyung had stolen someone’s ARMY bomb and was using it as a microphone during J-hope’s ment, adding fake backup vocals every few seconds just to annoy him. Yoongi looked one inconvenience away from leaving society entirely.

Namjoon should’ve been paying attention to literally any of that.

Instead, he was watching Jin.

Not in an obvious way. At least, he hoped not. Jin simply had a way of pulling attention toward himself naturally, especially onstage. He knew exactly how to work a crowd without looking rehearsed doing it. One smile and entire sections of the stadium would lose their minds.

“ARMY!” Jin shouted suddenly, spinning in a slow circle near the center platform. “Are you having fun tonight?” He says in an english accent.

The scream that answered him was deafening.

Jin grinned brightly at the reaction, shoulders shaking with laughter as he held one hand dramatically over his heart. “Wah, seriously? This much?”

Namjoon smiled despite himself.

Maybe that was part of the problem lately. Smiling around Jin had become too easy.

The ARIRANG tour in Tampa had only just started, but somehow the long rehearsals and constant traveling had shifted the group dynamics into something softer, less guarded. They’d all been together for years, obviously, but tours always did this to them, blurred personal space, too many sleepless nights, emotional conversations at three in the morning after concerts when everyone was still buzzing from adrenaline.

And Jin had been attached to Namjoon’s side through most of it.

Not intentionally. Or maybe intentionally. Namjoon genuinely couldn’t tell anymore.

Jin leaned on him constantly backstage now, stealing his hoodies because rehearsal rooms were “cold,” stealing drinks because apparently his own water tasted worse, sitting close enough during flights that their shoulders stayed pressed together the entire time.

Nobody else seemed particularly bothered by it.

Which honestly felt insane to Namjoon because every single interaction had started affecting him far more than it should.

“Hyung.”

Namjoon blinked, realizing Jungkook was talking to him now.

“What?”

“You zoned out again.”

“I did not.”

“You’ve been staring at Jin-hyung for like thirty seconds.”

Namjoon immediately looked away on instinct. “That’s literally not true.”

Unfortunately, Jungkook’s grin only widened.

Before Namjoon could defend himself further, Jin jogged back toward them from the opposite side of the stage, slightly breathless and glowing under the lights. Sweat dampened the edges of his hair, strands sticking to his forehead while his oversized tour jacket with purple butterflies on it hung half off one shoulder from moving around too much.

He looked unfairly good.

Namjoon hated himself a little.

“What are you two talking about?” Jin asked, reaching automatically for Namjoon’s water bottle sitting beside the monitor speaker.

“Nothing,” Namjoon answered too quickly.

Jungkook made a suspicious choking noise.

Jin blinked between them before shrugging and taking a drink anyway. The crowd instantly reacted the moment the camera screens caught it.

The screaming got louder.

Namjoon stared at the bottle in disbelief once Jin handed it back. “You have your own.”

“But yours was closer.”

“That’s not the point.”

Jin smiled lazily, entirely unbothered. “You’re so dramatic lately.”

“Me?”

“Yes, you.”

“You literally steal my things every day.”

“Because you love me.”

The sentence landed so casually that Namjoon almost missed it. Almost.

His brain stalled for one horrible second while Jin wandered away again without a second thought, already waving toward another section of fans. Meanwhile, beside him, Jungkook physically turned away to scream into his mic silently.

Namjoon kicked the back of his shoe without hesitation.

“Ow!”

“Act normal then.”

“You act normal!”

“I am normal.”

Jungkook looked genuinely offended by the statement. “No you aren’t.”

Before Namjoon could threaten him properly, the members were being herded back together for final ments. J-hope immediately threw an arm around Yoongi’s shoulders despite Yoongi clearly wanting freedom, while Taehyung leaned against Jimin dramatically like he’d lost all physical strength.

Jin drifted back to Namjoon’s side without hesitation.

Like always.

“Okay,” J-hope announced loudly, “before we end tonight-”

“No speeches longer than five minutes,” Yoongi interrupted immediately.

“Why are you killing my artistic freedom?”

“Because we have another concert tomorrow.”

The crowd laughed while J-hope sulked theatrically into his microphone. Beside Namjoon, Jin bumped their shoulders together lightly.

“You should talk first,” Jin said quietly.

Namjoon glanced over. “Why me?”

“Because you’re the leader.”

“That excuse stopped working years ago.”

“Still works on me.”

There was something unfair about the way Jin said things sometimes. Completely sincere. Completely casual. Like he had no idea the effect he had on people. Or maybe he knew exactly.

Namjoon looked out toward the audience instead, trying to collect himself before speaking. Thousands of lights shimmered back at him across the dark stadium, beautiful enough to ground him slightly.

“This tour…” he started slowly, voice softer now, “it’s honestly been overwhelming already. In a good way.” The crowd cheered.

Namjoon smiled faintly. “We worked really hard on this album, and seeing everyone here tonight makes me feel like maybe that effort reached people the way we hoped it would.”

Halfway through the ment, he heard Jin humming approvingly beside him.

Not even jokingly. Just listening.

Namjoon’s chest tightened unexpectedly.

He finished speaking to applause before stepping back again, letting Jimin take over while the others clapped dramatically around him. Jin leaned closer during the transition.

“You did well,” he said quietly. Simple words. Still enough to affect him more than they should’ve.

“Thanks.”

Jin smiled softly before looking back toward the crowd again, and Namjoon found himself watching for half a second too long. Not even intentionally.

His attention just caught on details sometimes, the curve of Jin’s smile under stage lights, the way his lipstick had faded almost completely by now, the tiny crease near his mouth whenever he laughed. Small things. Dangerous things.

As if sensing it, Jin turned suddenly. Their eyes met immediately.

“What?” Jin mouthed, amused already.

Namjoon shook his head fast, looking away before his expression betrayed anything embarrassing. Unfortunately, the movement made his gaze dip downward briefly first, catching on Jin’s lips for the shortest second imaginable.

Tiny mistake. But Jin noticed everything.

His smile changed almost instantly, subtle enough nobody else would catch it. Just slightly softer around the edges. Slightly more entertained.

Namjoon felt heat climb into his face immediately.

Oh, unbelievable.

Thankfully, the audience was distracted by Taehyung and J-hopes arguing over who cried more during rehearsals, meaning nobody seemed to notice Namjoon actively losing psychological warfare against one man standing three feet away.

Except Yoongi.

Of course.

Yoongi looked between them once, deeply tired already, then muttered into his mic, “Some of you are making this concert difficult for me personally.”

The crowd screamed like they understood exactly what he meant.

Namjoon wanted to walk directly into traffic.
