Minnie was on live with her fans when she made the promise.
She was sitting in the dressing room before a performance, just chatting casually with everyone who was watching. Someone had asked her to take a selfie, and without thinking, she'd agreed.
"Yeah, I'll take a selfie for you guys," she said, grinning at the camera. "I'll send it later today. Promise."
The comments flooded in immediately, hearts and excited messages from fans who were thrilled at the prospect of getting a selfie from her. Minnie laughed and waved at the camera before ending the live.
But as she was getting ready, she realized something. Today was a big day for Miyeon. A solo showcase performance that she'd been preparing for weeks. Miyeon had been nervous about it all morning, quiet and a little withdrawn.
Minnie had kissed her forehead before they left the dorm that morning. "You're going to be incredible," she'd whispered. "I already know it."
But she wanted to do something more. Something special. Something private that would remind Miyeon that Minnie believed in her, that Minnie saw her.
So after the performance, Minnie snuck away for a few minutes. She found a quiet corner backstage, away from the chaos and the noise. She took a moment to fix her hair and makeup, but more than that, she took a moment to think about Miyeon. About how brave she was. About how much Minnie loved her.
And then she took a selfie. But this one was different. This one was just for Miyeon.
In the photo, Minnie wasn't performing for the camera. She was soft. She was smiling gently, her eyes warm and full of affection. There was tenderness in every line of her face. She looked like someone who was completely and utterly in love.
She took the selfie and immediately texted it to Miyeon with a message: "You're going to be amazing today. I believe in you with my whole heart. Go get them, baby. I'm so proud of you. I love you."
Then she remembered her promise to her fans. She took another selfie — this one more polished, more camera-ready. She posted it on her Instagram story with a caption: "As promised! Thank you for always supporting me. I love you all so much."
The fan selfie got thousands of likes within minutes. Comments poured in from all over the world, people expressing their love and excitement. Minnie felt the warmth of that support, and she was grateful for it.
But her phone buzzed a few minutes later, and that made her heart skip in a completely different way.
It was Miyeon responding to the private selfie. "I love you so much. Thank you for this. I needed it."
And then: "I'm about to go on. Wish me luck?"
Minnie immediately typed back: "You don't need luck. You're incredible. You're talented and brave and beautiful and you're going to absolutely shine out there. Go show them who you are. I'll be watching from the wings, cheering for you. Always."
She sent it with a heart emoji, and then she made her way to the wings of the stage. She wanted to be there to watch Miyeon perform. She wanted to see her shine. She wanted Miyeon to know that no matter what happened on that stage, Minnie was there, believing in her.
And when Miyeon came out on stage, she was radiant. She was confident and poised and absolutely stunning. And Minnie knew that the private selfie had helped. That knowing someone believed in her, that having that moment of affection and reassurance, had made a difference.
But more than that, Minnie saw the moment Miyeon found her in the wings. Saw the way Miyeon's eyes softened when she looked at her. Saw the small smile that was just for Minnie. And Minnie's heart felt like it might burst right out of her chest.
After the performance, Miyeon found Minnie immediately. She was still in her stage outfit, her hair and makeup perfect, but she looked vulnerable and open in a way that made Minnie's breath catch.
"Did you see?" Miyeon asked softly.
"Of course I saw," Minnie said. She reached out and took Miyeon's hand, pulling her closer. "You were perfect. Absolutely perfect. I'm so proud of you."
"I was so nervous," Miyeon admitted. "But then I got your text, and I read it right before I went on. And I looked up, and I saw you in the wings. And it helped. You helped. Everything just... made sense after that."
"That's why I sent it," Minnie said. She squeezed Miyeon's hand and then pulled her into a gentle hug, careful not to mess up either of their makeup. "I wanted you to know that I'm always going to be there for you. In the big moments and the small ones."
Miyeon held on tight. "Thank you. For the selfie. For the message. For being there. For everything."
"Always, baby," Minnie said softly. She pulled back just enough to look at Miyeon's face, and then she kissed her forehead. "I'm always here for you. You know that, right?"
"I know," Miyeon said. "I feel it."
Later that evening, after they'd gotten back to the dorm and changed out of their stage clothes, they lay in bed together. Miyeon was curled against Minnie's chest, her fingers tracing lazy patterns on Minnie's arm.
"Can I ask you something?" Miyeon said softly.
"Anything," Minnie said. She kissed the top of Miyeon's head.
"Why did you send me that private selfie?" Miyeon asked. "I mean, I know you said it was to wish me luck. But... it felt like more than that."
Minnie was quiet for a moment, her hand stroking Miyeon's hair gently. "Because you needed to know that I see you," she said finally. "Not just as a performer or as someone who's supposed to be perfect. But as a person. As someone I love more than anything. Someone who gets nervous and scared and needs reassurance sometimes. Someone who deserves to know how incredible they are."
"And the fans?" Miyeon asked gently.
"The fans are important," Minnie said. "And I love them. But you... you're different. You're mine. And I wanted you to know that I'm always going to show up for you in the way that matters most. Not just the public stuff. The private stuff. The stuff that's just for us. The stuff that's real.
Miyeon tilted her head up to look at Minnie, and Minnie could see the love there. So much love.
"I love you so much," Miyeon whispered.
"I love you too, baby," Minnie said. She held Miyeon closer, breathing in the familiar scent of her. "So much. More than I know how to say."
They were quiet for a moment. And then Miyeon said softly, "Can I tell you something else?"
"Of course," Minnie said.
"I looked at that selfie like a hundred times today," Miyeon admitted. "Every time I got nervous, I'd pull it up and look at your face. And it was like... you were there with me. Like I could feel you believing in me. And it helped every single time."
Minnie felt her heart swell to impossible proportions. She kissed Miyeon's forehead again, then her temple, then her cheek. "Good. I'm glad. Because that's exactly why I sent it. I wanted you to have a piece of me with you. I wanted you to know that no matter where you are, I'm there too."
"The fans are going to be so jealous when they find out you sent me a private selfie," Miyeon said with a small, teasing laugh.
"They don't need to know," Minnie said. She took Miyeon's hand and brought it to her heart. "That one is just for you. That one is just ours. This is ours."
And Miyeon understood what Minnie meant. There was a difference between the public Minnie and the private Minnie. There was a difference between the selfies she sent to thousands of people and the selfie she sent to the one person who mattered most.
