Work Header

I’m gonna sleep ‘cause you live in my daydreams

Summary:

Buddy didn’t know how to explain it.
But every time he looked in the mirror, he hated his body.

And not because he Was insecure.

It didn’t feel right.
At all.
This couldn’t be who he was, right?

But this was the body he was born in.

Mom always called him her “sweet little boy”
Dad always talked about his future, with him meeting a sweet girl, and having kids just like him and his mother.

But it just made him feel uncomfortable, and gross.

Why?

Notes:

I feel as though it is important to note that I am non-binary, not trans. So if I get anything wrong about trans identity, i deeply apologize

I have had this idea for months at this point, it’s inspired by a convo I saw on the human buddy discord server when buddy was first introduced to the show and 2 people were talking about how they wished that buddy was girl, to which one of them replied “It’s okay maybe they can be transfem”

And it bloomed into this idea!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Buddy didn’t know who he could talk about this with. It seemed like a complete taboo, nobody ever talked about being uncomfortable in their own body. Atleast, not like this.

It was always about other things, like how their nose looked, or their hair, and he didn’t think it was invalid but..

Buddy just wished that they would talk about feeling uncomfortable in this way.

He turned his body to the side to inspect his appearance.

The mirror showed him what he looked like in perfect detail, it almost felt cruel.

His mind wandered off to the girls in his class, he would stare at their bodies, but not in a creepy way.

No, buddy longed to have the same look.

buddy longed to have pretty hair could put hair clips and hair pins in.

Buddy longed to sit at the lunch table with the girls, talking about random, unimportant things. To fit in with them.

Buddy longed to be able to go to the girls side when the teachers separated them by their sex.

buddy longed to be called “she”.

But what would everybody think of him if he said it out loud?

He had never seen or heard of someone being in the same position as him before.

Buddy kicked the football, watching it roll across the grass.

“Who-hoo! You’re getting really good at this, Brain!”

Buddy’s Heart exclaimed, he would’ve clapped If he wasn’t, you know, an organ.

”Are you serious? He plays like a confused puppy who just got kicked in the leg!”

His kidney’s shouted back before they both burst out laughing in unison.

But buddy didn’t have time to respond to the rather rude comment, He was far to focused on finally beating his father

His dad had started playing football with him every since he was a little kid, saying that he was training him for the NBA.

Buddy knew his father was trying to live his lost dreams through him, and, to be honest, always thought it was cringey.

The only reason he continued playing was because, he actually enjoyed playing football; Sure, he had never actually beat his father (much to his dad’s pride but also annoyance). But he was still quite good at it.

The kids at his school would always pick him first for the games they played, and Buddy would feel terrible for the kids who would get picked last, watching the humiliation spread across their faces.

Then in a moment of distraction, Buddy’s father managed to beat Him..Buddy cursed himself and sighed, looking defeated.

His father patted his back and leaned down to buddy’s level; signature black hair and tanned skin invading his eyesight.

“Hey, you can’t win em all, kid!”

Dad Was gone.

Again…

The family doctor had something he needed to do with him.

To Buddy, the Doctor was always strange. He was a literal floating hand! And he had been there, with his dad, long before he himself had been born, and before his dad had met his mother!

…And don’t even get Buddy started on the Doctors Cousin.

Doktor was his name, he was also a floating hand, except he was blue.

He might be worse, or better than Doctor. He had heard the story about how when he was a baby, the Doktor turned his dad into tons of different animals.

That was pretty bad, but the doctor had done terrible things to his father as well.

He made him experience the different death penalties of history, for gods sake!

Atleast it was the more tame ones, but still.

. . .

Maybe being a floating hand runs in Doctors blood line?

Oh who was he kidding??

How could hands reproduce with eachother anyway?

…Buddy didn’t want to think about it.

Chatter filled his senses.

Monday. The start of a new school week.

Buddy tiredly grabbed the tardy slip from one of the school’s staff members who hadn’t bothered to look at him.

He found his locker and took his science textbook out; before shutting the locker and turned around on his heel to his 1st class.

The door was wide open, the teacher standing by the door keeping watch for students who may not be doing what they were supposed to.

He handed the teacher the tardy slip he received and got back a disapproving glare. He cringed and walked away.

Buddy found his seat next to a brunette girl. The seating chart was boy-girl boy-girl.

He wished he could look like her

He wished he had done his homework, yeah! Yeah!…

Oh crap, his homework…

“Mama, am I a boy?”

“Of course you are!” Buddy’s mom chuckled. “What made you think otherwise?”

Buddy looked down at his feet.

”It was…a joke.”

Buddy responded awkwardly.

The sound of a door unlocking interrupted their conversation, effectively saving buddy from the awkwardness.

In walked Doctor who was wheeling in Buddy’s father; Buddy observed that his dad was wrapped up tight in casts on his arms and legs, and he wore a regretful expression.

”and that’s why you don’t try rock climbing without the proper equipment!”

The doctor stated in his per usual sassy tone.

Buddy’s mom sighed and took doctors place. She began scolding her husband for acting recklessly with his own life once again.

Buddy took the opportunity to dash up the stairs into his room, slamming the door behind him.

Buddy pulled a blanket over his head, breathing out slowly.

what a strange experience…

”I’m sooo hungry..! Brain, can we get some food? Prettyyy pleaseee??”

Buddy jumped slightly at the sudden intrusion on his thinking.

His Stomach.

Buddy declined, He didn’t feel like going back downstairs to that mess…

Buddy’s Stomach was clearly upset at being declined and whined for a little before being told to shut up by Liver.

Buddy slowly fell asleep, tired from the events of the day.

Buddy opened his eyes. Light was pouring in through the window.

That meant it was, A, still day, or B, the next day.

He sat up to look at the time on the clock, but was interrupted by something soft smacking against his arms.He looked to see what it was and was shocked (and delighted…) to see he had long hair.

Buddy got up to take a look at himself in the mirror.

He saw that more had changed than just his hair.

He was a girl now!

Buddy couldn’t contain her excitement, she jumped up and down in glee, and!

and-

Buddy woke up.

It was dark out.

”It was just a dream…”

He sighed in disappointment.

Buddy wished it was real so, so, badly it was painful.

He looked at the clock.

2:18 am.

Tuesday.

Maybe someday his deepest rooted desire would become true.

He could be a girl.

He could have the long hair he always dreamed of.

he could be referred to as “she”

but for now he was stuck like this.

Alone.
