Having the Volturi learn about the existence of a human-vampire hybrid was never in Carlisle Cullen’s bingo card. But alas, no matter how careful one is with secrets, even the most guarded will be brought to light.
Now his coven, his family, will soon come face to face with the ruling body of vampire society and hope that they will be willing to hear them out before condemning them for the crime of creating an immortal child. Carlisle could understand why Irina had mistaken his granddaughter, Renesmee as one. But the fact that the female vampire didn’t give them the chance to explain did send a wave of sadness through him.
In his study, Carlisle studied the journal he held between his hands. It was where he kept all of his acquaintances’ information, both old and new. He had already gone through a solid third of the list and made a note of whom he could contact and would most likely answer his call. He had already reached out to the rest of the Denali coven along with the Irish Coven through Siobhan, and even his old friend Alistair.
Carlisle had already spent the better part of the day reaching out to them and there was still a handful of names left. As he looked over the remaining names he felt a small amount of dread begin to form.
The remaining vampires on the list were either too difficult to locate in such a short amount of time or were extreme Volturi loyalists who wouldn’t hesitate to try to kill them once they found out about Renesmee.
Just as he was beginning to lose hope in getting another potential witness his eyes stopped on one particular name, one that he hadn’t seen in a long time.
How many years has it been since he’s contacted these particular vampires? A decade? Two? Or maybe half a century?
There was no use in thinking about it now, especially when it came to them. Carlisle pursed his lips as he weighed his odds. There was a good chance he would get immediately rejected and told to, in not-so-gracious terms, to Fuck Off. But there was also a chance that, if one of them was feeling generous, they would be willing to help them.
As eccentric as the pair were, they were gifted vampires and would be valuable allies should the worst come to happen.
Carlisle just hoped that it was the magic wielding one that answered and not the arrogant rose.
Mind made up, he grabbed his phone to try to find their latest contact information. Hopefully, the conversation wouldn’t go too badly.
It was a rather peaceful evening in the city of Munich, Germany. The city was bustling with street vendors, businessmen were hurrying from one place to another, tourists stopping to take pictures of everything and anything, the whole works.
Cold azure eyes tracked the movement of the people in the city from their place inside a luxurious yet comfortable apartment.
Dressed in a luxurious blue robe, Michael Kaiser gazed out the window into the city below as he lounged in the living room with a magenta-haired figure curled up at his side.
Alexis Ness was currently rereading one of his Harry Potter books and by the looks of it, it seemed to be his favorite one. Kaiser almost felt bad for being the one who disturbed him but it was almost dinner time.
“Alexis,” he murmured.
Ness hummed in response.
“I’m hungry.”
The magenta haired vampire let out a small huff of laughter at his lover’s straightforward statement. “I’ll get started on dinner right away!”
He swiftly got up from the sofa, after carefully marking his place in the book before setting it aside, and made his way to the kitchen.
Traditionally, vampires are unable to digest normal human food since their bodies have become hardwired to consume blood upon their transformation. Fortunately for Kaiser and Ness, they weren’t bound by the same rules as the rest of the vampiric race.
Why you may ask? Simple, Ness was a magician in every sense of the word.
It took many years, but Ness was able to assemble the perfect rune combination to make food digestible for them. So every once in a while they indulge in the human cuisine to bask in the nostalgic taste of food from their time as humans.
Now that dinner preparations were underway Kaiser had to only wait. With a sigh, he let his head fall back on the plush cushions. The blond closed his eyes as he let the sounds of food cooking and dishes clinking wash over him.
He was beginning to fall into a peaceful meditative state before the loud sound of his phone ringing broke the blissful moment.
Fuuuck
Perhaps if he ignores it the ringing will go away eventually right?
The phone stops ringing only to immediately start again. Kaiser tries to ignore the sound, truly but he really wants to get back to his previous state of nothingness.
Having had enough, Kaiser tsks at the continued sound of the phone ringing and swipes the phone from the stand to answer it.
He was about to tell whoever called him off before the voice from the other side beat him to it.
“Good evening, I assume I have the right number?” A smooth voice from the other end. It was a voice he hadn’t heard in a long time but instantly recognized.
With a cold grin, Kaiser sneered, “Well if it isn’t the vegetarian doctor.”
A chuckle, “Indeed it is Kaiser, indeed it is.” The sound of a body shifting around came from the other end before he spoke again. “I must say it has been a long time since we last spoke. Tell me, how have you been? Anything interesting going on?”
“Well,” Kaiser drawled, “I’ve been doing amazing as always, Ness has been working on his little passion projects as usual, and let’s be honest no one who values their pathetic life would dare venture into my territory.”
“You don’t say,” Carlisle replied conversationally.
“Oh, I do say. But enough of this nonsense Carlisle, you and I both know that there’s no use beating around the bush. What’s the real reason you called?” Kaiser inquired.
A beat.
“I see you’re still sharp as always Kaiser.” The older vampire stated, voice taking on a serious tone. “I need your help.”
“Oh? The high and mighty paragon of restraint and morality needs help from little ol’me?”
“Yes, I am. I’m also hoping that Ness could also lend his support as well if it’s not too much to ask.”
Kaiser's eyes narrowed at the additional request. “Just what type of mess did you get yourself into? You’re not the type to get into trouble, Carlisle.”
From the other end, the head of the Cullen family carefully selected his next choice of words.
“In a week, my family will be facing judgment from the Volturi under the accusation of creating an immortal child” Kaiser feels his blood run cold at this, “and I’m asking that you and Ness act as our witnesses.”
Kaiser's response was immediate.
“Absolutely not.”
“I know this sounds like treason but I’m asking you to hear me out.” Carlisle pleaded. “The child is a human and vampire-“
“My answer remains the same Carlisle.” Kaiser cut in, tone brokering no argument. “I don’t care if you see the child as your granddaughter or a pet. I have no interest in being roped into a coven war I have no part in.”
The sound of a throat being cleared caught the blue rose’s attention and it turned around to see Ness standing in front of it. The sounds of him arguing over the phone must have caught the magenta haired man’s attention.
Having the blond's attention fully on him, Ness cocks his head to the side in question.
With an irritated scoff, Kaiser takes the phone away from his ear and hands it over to Ness gesturing to the other to deal with the source of his annoyance. With a nod, Ness holds the phone up to his own ear.
“We’ll call you back later Carlisle,” Ness spoke into the phone before promptly hanging up.
He then turns to look at Kaiser, “Food's ready, let’s go eat!”
The pair moves towards the kitchen where Kaiser begins to dig into the food Ness had prepared. A moment of silence passed before Ness decided to breach the topic of the Olympic coven.
“You do know that acting as witnesses wouldn’t immediately put us in bad standing with the Volturi, right?” He hums conversationally.
The unspoken emphasis on us was more than enough for Kaiser to understand what Ness meant to stay.
‘Helping the Cullen Coven won’t put me in danger, Kaiser.’
Kaiser remained silent and continued eating the chicken his mate had lovingly prepared.
Ness sighed at his lover’s stubbornness but continued nonetheless. “We’ve known Carlisle personally since the early 1900s, and he’s not the type to do anything illegal, much less get on the wrong side of the Volturi. He’s protective of his family.”
Seeing that the other man was not going to protest Ness continued, “We don’t have to stay in the Cullen coven's house, we could rent a hotel in Seattle so that we’re near enough to help out but far enough away should anything go wrong.”
Alexis had made several valid points, but it seemed that it still would not be enough to convince his mate.
With a small sigh, he decided not to push the issue further and let the other finish his meal in peace.
After dinner, the pair moved to their shared bedroom that boasted a lavish king-sized bed, fitted with only the best and high quality bedding money could buy. Personally, Ness’s favorite part of the room was the skylight that allowed them to view the moon as it crossed the night sky.
While they did not require sleep, it was still nice to hold onto human habits. It was also an effective way to allow both of them to relax and process the day's events, busy schedule or not.
Ness was quick to settle on his side of the bed, located on the left near the wall. Being sandwiched between the solid barrier and his lover's body gave him a sense of comfort he never got when he was younger. He sat upright, cushioned by a fluffy pillow, and opened his book from its previous bookmark and continued reading.
Kaiser for his part took his time in settling down. He lazily stripped off his shirt, preferring to sleep with just his pants, and slowly climbed into his side of the bed. Once he was comfortable, Kaiser found his gaze drifting to look at Ness.
The blonde vampire takes his time looking over the other's face. Taking in the doe like magenta eyes, the way his soft wavy hair fades from a dark brown to a brilliant fuchsia, and how could he miss the way Ness’s lips curl into the V-shaped smile Kaiser adored so much.
He was fortunate that Ness had decided to stay by his side for eternity, immortalizing their bond until the end of time.
But there had been a time when he thought that such a thing wouldn’t be possible. And it almost wasn’t if Kaiser had arrived just a fraction later. Had things gone differently he would have lost the one thing that had made his living and undead life bearable.
Kaiser knew what it was like to almost lose something precious, something that meant more than life itself. And he knew how much the Coven meant to the doctor.
“Fine,” He grunted, electing to ignore the knowing look Ness sent him. “But as soon as things go south, we’re out. I don’t care if you have to kill someone in the process but we are not staying to play soldier to some entitled leeches understood?”
“Crystal clear!” Ness chirped from his spot beside Kaiser before he conjured his phone seemingly out of thin air and handed it to him.
Kaiser could only give Ness a fond look of exasperation at being read so easily. But wasn’t that also part of the reason he tore himself to the magician?
Taking the phone he clicked on the doctor's contact and held it up to his ear as he waited for the other vampire to pick up.
“Hey Carlisle,” He began without so much as a proper greeting, “We’ll meet you in Seattle sometime in the next two days. Oh, and make sure that our hotel is one of the luxury ones. If I’m going to be vouching for you the least you can do is make sure my mate and I have comfortable arrangements during our stay.”
Kaiser doesn’t even bother to wait for a confirmation before promptly hanging up on the doctor.
