Is bro okay?

Summary:

The kid didn’t follow, he wanted to but he didn’t. Why? He didn’t really know. Instead he kneeled on the floor and reached out, yelling after them.

“Nonononono! PLEASE! PLEASE DONT GO! I DON’T WANT TO BE HERE ALONE! PLEASE! PLEASE!”

But it was too late, they had already gone.

Work Text:

“Please. Please don’t go. Please don’t leave me.” The five-year-old cried, fresh tears spilling down his face as he stared up at his parents with wide, teary eyes.

His mother stood near the entrance of the cave, warm light shining past the long ivy draping over the doorway. She looked almost ethereal, her pale lilac skin tone a contrast to the gold evening sunlight coating the forest outside. Her dark ender dragon wings wrapped around her frame like a shield as she sobbed into her hands, her long hair gracefully flowing in the cool breeze.

His father had been shoving food into a small sack before he took one look at his wife and quickly dropped the bag to go comfort her. He put his arms around her trembling frame, his black skin a clear sign of his voidling bloodline. “I’m sorry son. This is the only way to keep you safe-”

“BY LEAVING ME HERE TO ROT ALONE WHILE YOU GO HIDE WITHOUT ME!? The purple one interrupted, his wings shooting out in frustration. His skin was more purple than his mother’s but his tail was more like his father’s, thin and very expressive which was clear in the way it lashed out now.

He quickly shut his mouth and folded his wings back in as he saw his own mother cautiously step away from him. His heart burned and his breath caught as his eyes filled with tears again.

“Please, @!&$*£, this is for your own good.” His father attempted again, turning to face him.

“HOW!? HOW IS ABANDONING ME FOR MY OWN GOOD!?” The child swiveled to look at this mother. “Mum, please. Why are you letting him do this? Why are you abandoning me-?”

“BECAUSE I DON’T WANT TO SEE YOU GET HURT AGAIN!” His mother finally snapped.

The purple one froze.

His mother’s voice dropped to a whisper, choking on her tears. “Do you know how it feels when you watch your son sprint through your front doors, bleeding and dirty, crying about some people who had chased him through the forest. Do you know how it feels to have to move just so you get the slightest feeling of safety and comfort that your child isn’t in danger? It’s horrible and I don’t want you to be in danger anymore.”

“So you’re just going to abandon me? Like that’s going to make me any safer.”

“It will make you safer. Nobody will have a reason to hunt you.’

“I don’t care about being safe, I just want to be with you! Please.” He sobbed, his chest tightening slowly.

His father shook his head sadly. “You can’t.”

A horn sounded in the distance, not too close but not far enough for their liking.

His mother scrambled to pick up the discarded sack and fill it with whatever they might need while they were gone. His father grabbed his arms and made the little dragon look at him. “Son, we have to leave now, I’m sorry. I love you so much.”

“No. I hate you. I hate you, I hate you, I HATE YOU! DON’T LEAVE ME HERE! PLEASE! PLEASE, LET ME COME TOO!”

His parents ignored his pleading as they walked over to the entrance and brushed aside the ivy, letting gold light fill the small cave. His mother turned back at the last second. “I’m sorry, you’ll understand when you’re older. Goodbye sweetheart.” And then she left, dropping the plants and submerging the cave in darkness once again.

The little dragon shifted to sit on the floor and hugged his knees tightly to his chest, rocking back and forth. His wings wrapped around him and his tail wrapped itself around his calf as he sobbed and sobbed.

Why didn’t they understand? How could they not understand that he didn’t want to be here alone? They abandoned him that easily. WHY!? WHY!? WHY!? HE DIDN’T WANT TO BE ALONE! HE WANTED SOMEONE TO HUG HIM, TO LOVE HIM, ANYTHING!

He struggled to breathe as his throat constricted and refused oxygen, his heart seizing painfully in his chest almost as if a hand had wrapped around it and was trying to crush it. Soon enough, his head started pounding and his heart, hishearthurtsomuchandnownobodycaredabouthim-

So he just lay there, struggling to breath as his heart ached and he drowned in his tears, his home slowly turning into a lonely house.

Because what else could he do?

Now he was truly alone.

Wemmbu jolted awake, tears already streaming down his face.

It was the same memory he had been reliving over and over recently, a memory that he desperately wished was nothing more than a silly, meaningless nightmare.

However, something was different this time, something that made his blood run cold.

He hadn’t seen their faces this time.

He was starting to forget them.
