Work Text:
The grey skies of Tokyo as seen from the terminal at Haneda Airport felt reminiscent of the first time Anon had returned from aboard, the gloomy overcast a mirror image of London's skies.
However, unlike that experience, Anon's return to Japan this time around wasn't prompted by failure and she could keep her head high as she walked past the troves of people commuting, taking in the once familiar environment around her.
She lifted her carry on bag onto her shoulder as she headed towards the exit since her other belongings had been sent back earlier, ready for her return.
8 years had passed by since Anon had left.
As she walked outside, the slight chill in the air hit Anon, brushing through her pink hair while she looked around, thinking back to that time.
Anon's decision to return to London was received with mix reactions from those closest to her, but she had set her mind to it, determined to complete her studies and embrace a culture unlike her own. It should have remained as such, graduate in London and then return home, but that didn't happen.
Her career in fashion took off quicker than anticipated, her foot in the door with associates and friends she had made which allowed her to rise up as a renowned fashion blogger in a notable company where she managed content creators, as well as organised events.
Eventually, Anon had settled into her life, but an amalgam of professional opportunities and a subtle but latching longing for the life she left behind ambushed her once those opportunities were offered, along with the choice to return back to Japan.
So here she stood, back where everything started.
Anon wasn't quite sure how she felt yet but some of that doubt would be effaced when she saw a familiar fractious face leaning back against a vehicle in the car park and Anon grinned at the sight.
"Same as always, huh?" she thought before calling out to her, "Rikki!".
Anon laughed when the scowl on the woman's face deepened but her widened purple eyes counteracted the vexation as soon as she saw Anon bound up to her.
"Wait, not here-".
It was too late as Anon launched herself at Taki, drowning her in a hug, "Long time no see! You're still as small as ever!".
Taki resigned to her fate and embraced the woman back, patting her on the shoulder before Anon let her go and they took each other in, seeming the same but both were not the people they used to be, at least not entirely.
"Disappears for 8 years and still as annoying as ever when she returns" Taki smirked.
"Missed you too, Rikki" Anon smiled as she looked on softly, "It's good to see you though, and thanks for picking me up".
"It's fine" Taki insisted and took her bag, placing it in the car, "Honestly, I thought you were messing with me when you said you were coming back".
Anon walked around and got into the passenger side, "I still can't believe I'm back" she chuckled, "I can't wait to see everyone though. Well, anyone who still wants to see me".
Another surly individual crossed their minds and Taki could see that Anon was pensive about seeing her again, but there was no telling how the reunion would go so she told Anon not to think about it for now.
"I don't know about her but Tomori and Raana are looking forward to seeing you, Anon".
"I didn't know Tomori was back in Tokyo".
Taki hummed whilst watching the road, "Yeah, for a few years now. She's working on her new book".
"Oh, that's amazing! I can't believe our Tomorin is an author" Anon grinned, "Well, I can but you know. How's Raana been?".
"She's living with Umiri and me".
Anon almost whipped her head to the side, silver eyes expending, "Like, living with or living with you both?!".
"I don't even know what that means but whatever you're thinking, stop" Taki glared at her friend, "She's playing guitar as always though".
"I'm guessing at your live house?".
The former drummer nodded, "You haven't been yet".
"I'm looking forward to it, Rikki" Anon said earnestly, "Even though the band broke up, I'm glad you're all involved in music in some way".
As much as Taki wanted to ask if Anon was the same, she refrained from doing so, aware of Anon's career, and she knew that Anon felt responsible for breaking up MyGO!!!!!.
Nobody blamed her but she knew Anon well enough now.
Taki turned the car onto the main roads and drove away of the airport as Anon stared out at the scenery, a sense of wonder and nostalgia overtaking her now that she was back home while Taki updated her on what she could.
The revelry between the two continued as they exchanged parables of each other's lives, catching up for the duration of the drive.
The omitting of Soyo's life wasn't accidental and Anon appreciated the consideration from Taki.
While she was glad to be back, her ever ambiguous relationship with Soyo and its fiery end would be a challenge to navigate.
***
After a few days of settling in at her apartment, Anon grew too restless as she hadn't met up with Soyo yet, but she had messaged her saying that she was back.
It was received with a lukewarm response that bordered facetious while the abandoned MyGO!!!!! group chat became active again.
That reaction alone made Anon feel apprehensive but she decided to visit Soyo in the evening, hoping that she was going to be home. Anon had no idea how their reunion was going to go but she had no choice but to do this now before she backed out again.
So there she was stood at Soyo's new address, an apartment similar to the one before but in a different part of Tokyo, close to where Soyo worked as the president of the company, taking over from her mother.
Anon rang the bell and quickly checked her outfit, brushing the black jacket down over her dress whilst shuffling in her brown ankle boots. The bag on her shoulder was being pressed down while Anon fixed her hair as much as she could after it being tousled in the wind.
Then she realised it was just Soyo she was seeing, but that phrase alone amped up her nervousness, so much so that she didn't have time to calm down when the door opened.
Stood in front of her was Soyo, her expression briefly shifting from surprise back to her usual froideur but Anon saw it.
She smiled at the brunette, "Hey, Soyo".
The normal use of her name caught Soyo off guard, "Anon" she said, looking the woman up and down, "I take it Taki gave you my address?".
"No, Tomorin actually. If Rikki gave it, you'd be mad at her and nobody can be mad at Tomorin" Anon chuckled, albeit nervously, "Can I come in?".
It was odd that Anon still referred to Taki and Tomori with their nicknames, yet hadn't done so with Soyo, a thought whirling around her mind.
Not even 5 minutes in Anon's presence and Soyo was feeling irked by her attempted repartee.
Regardless, Soyo opened the door fully so Anon went in, changing out of her shoes, her silver eyes on Soyo's back.
She was imminently captured by the certitude Soyo seemed to carry herself with, dressed in a blouse and skirt while her hair was tied in a low ponytail and to the side, still curled. The simple gesture of her hands being in her skirt pockets felt intimidating yet captivating, indicant to the woman's meteoric rise.
Walking further into the apartment, Soyo had evidently downsized despite the same finery interior remaining, and still lacking a warmth that lived in homes retained.
The darkness of the evening was visible from the floor to ceiling windows and Anon felt herself drawn to the balcony door, staring out.
"It's a nice place you have here" she commented, "What a view".
There were less buildings around which allowed more of the scenery to be seen, not that Soyo spent much time here.
"Thank you" Soyo said simply, "I'll make us some tea. Anything you want in particular?".
Anon turned and gave her a little grin, her fang visible, "I think you already know".
The brunette stared at her for a moment but then relented and so, a few minutes later, the two were seated on the sofa next to each other, the scent of earl grey emanating from the teacups.
There was a brief silence as they both enjoyed the first sip of the tea, along with the nostalgia it brought.
Anon observed Soyo from the corner of her eyes, the woman now the formidable president of the company her mother herself had climbed up the ladder, setting the benchmark to see her own daughter's success.
She wanted to start the conversation but didn't know how to, somewhat intimidated by the way Soyo was maintaining a polished, almost untouchable façade, so strikingly beautiful but unapproachable.
"So, how was London?".
Not expecting Soyo to break the silence, Anon managed to reply, "It was good".
"Really? 8 years there and that is all you can say? Whatever happened to the girl who would not shut up?".
Anon couldn't be sure if Soyo was teasing her given how this reunion seemed formal and charged with unspoken history which could turn calamitous.
"I don't know how much you want to hear, Soyo. You never replied to my messages back then".
Soyo looked down at her cup, "I suppose I didn't".
The ambience was taking a turn for the dire so Anon jumped into discussing her time in London, her work and how it felt to be back, anything to keep Soyo from thinking about the past too much.
"It was great to see the others again, but I can't lie, your tea is still the best" she smiled.
"You haven't tried Saki's yet".
"Oh, I'm going to meet her soon too" Anon perked up, "I met up with Nyamu and managed to catch up with her. How has Sakiko been?".
Soyo placed her teacup down, "She has been busy as you can imagine, but we've been in touch since she returned to Japan 3 years ago" she said, "We have a few things going on together with the company so I see her often. I'm sure you can catch up with her soon so I won't have to tell you everything".
Maybe it was her imagination but Soyo definitely seemed quite relaxed when discussing Sakiko, but Anon considered that a positive thing based on what had happened in the past.
She was still curious but would bring it up another time when she got a message on her phone, "Oh, sorry, Soyo. I have to check this".
"Work related?".
"Yeah, I haven't been to the Japan headquarters yet so they've scheduled a tour. Plus, there was the campaign we launched with Nyamu from London that needs to be promoted here too".
"Oh, the clothing line she was styling for you? I recall seeing the billboards".
Anon finished her message and grinned at Soyo, "I thought you wouldn't know my stuff".
"It's unavoidable" Soyo feigned and looked the other way, "I guess your dream came true, didn't it?".
There was something forlorn in the tone but Anon didn't know how to address it since Soyo was indefinitely referring to her sudden departure.
It felt like they were skating around the elephant in the room on thin ice.
Still, they managed to converse a bit more before Anon had to leave since she had a feeling that Soyo still adhered to a rigid sleeping schedule. Soyo walked her out to the entryway, watching her put her shoes back on and realised that Anon was the same height as her now which was aggravating.
Anon looked up at her, shuffling forward, "It was good to see you again".
"Likewise".
"Don't I get a hug?" Anon tried, smiling at the woman in a jovial manner.
"I heard that the others didn't get an option" Soyo revealed, "You were glued to Tomori until Taki had to peel you off of her".
Anon laughed and lifted her hand, "I guess..I mean, I just don't know if you'd want to".
"Since when did you care about my personal space? Intruding without my permission and leaving me a mess".
It was a thought that Soyo kept to herself before she moved forward and quickly wrapped her arms behind Anon's back, the other woman reacting immediately like Soyo would change her mind.
Anon exhaled as she felt like she had embraced something that had been missing, a feeling she could never forget, much like Soyo did.
But Soyo was quick to put some distance between them again, her hands slowly moving down Anon's arms before they were away from her.
Anon smiled and stepped back, "Goodnight, Soyo".
The brunette hummed, "Goodnight, Anon".
With one last glance at each other, Anon then left the apartment as Soyo stared at the door, feeling that warmth linger over her, something she had wanted to forget.
It was just like Anon to barge into her life again.

Arranging to meet with Sakiko was a little more difficult than assumed but once Anon and Sakiko had managed to find the time, it gave them a chance to reconnect.
Returning to the Togawa manor was a whole thing on its own accord as she and Sakiko were outside in the gardens, strolling around and admiring the spring foliage which added colour to the area.
"When Nyamu mentioned your return, I was quite surprised".
"Yeah, I've been getting that a lot" Anon replied with amusement, "I did have plans to come back, but I didn't realise I would be gone for this long".
"8 years is a long time" Sakiko said as she glanced up at the woman, "It is interesting, how much you have changed yet at the same time, you still seem the same" she educed.
"I could say the same about you".
They stopped near the gazebo as Anon walked head, her dress swaying against her thighs when she turned and took Sakiko in.
It seemed she had taken her role as the head of her family rather well, the sharpness in her eyes remaining while she revealed a softness only to those closest to her. Anon could admire how Sakiko had changed, the strength in that girl still continuing to this day.
With her hair tied back in a high ponytail, the ribbons were long gone so an air of maturity surrounded Sakiko, dressed in a blazer with a white dress underneath as the heels gave her a few more inches, adding to her height.
Sakiko knew what Anon was thinking, "I have adjusted to it now. Ending Ave Mujica was undoubtedly something I struggled with but I realised it was time back then".
"5 years ago.." Anon recounted, watching Sakiko gaze out into the afternoon sunlight, "Do you miss it, Sakiko?".
"Sometimes. I am glad that I have the memories to hold onto, and I do on occasion play the piano. However, with all the responsibilities that I have now, all I can do is reminisce".
Now, Sakiko's life was a continuous balancing act between her current aspirations and familial responsibilities, neither which she could escape.
But Anon saw it, a covert tension in Sakiko's demeanour, a subtle unhappiness that she picked up on.
She walked up to the woman and stood next to her, "I think that even having the memories is good enough. Things are different now but we're all still here, right?".
"Yes, now that someone has returned from who knows what she was getting up to in London" Sakiko finally smiled again, something more genuine, "Nyamu certainly kept us informed about your escapades".
"She did not" Anon feigned, a hand to her mouth, "I told her not to tell anyone about all the parties and women I involved myself with!".
That elicited a further laugh from the duo as they continued their walk throughout the expansive acres of the Togawa manor, watching the afternoon sunlight start to dwindle in the April haze.
Anon checked the time on her watch a while later, "Ah, I should get going now, Sakiko, it's getting late".
"Nonsense" Sakiko stated, "Stay for dinner, won't you? I feel like we still have much to catch up on".
An offer from Sakiko, especially such an earnest one, was something that Anon couldn't refuse, so she grinned and relented, "There's no saying no to you".
"Many have tried and failed" Sakiko jested.
The dinner was a comfortable affair in one of the smaller rooms as the two continued to catch up, the convenience turning to Soyo.
"We do have a few partnerships in the works, so working alongside her has been rewarding in many ways".
"I was glad to hear this" Anon smiled, sipping her water as she sat next to Sakiko at the head of the table, "You both went through a lot back then and things became kind of unsteady".
"It was to be expected, but a lot has happened since then".
"You know, I've always thought you both were so similar".
Sakiko raised a brow in thought, "Me and Soyo? I do wonder".
"No, no wondering needed" the other woman chuckled, "You're two of the strongest people I know, always so dedicated and sure of themselves. I don't know, I just see what drew you both to each other".
Sakiko thought back to that fateful day, the offer for Soyo to join her, the confusion in those blue eyes.
And then to see those exact eyes look at her with so much trust and adoration.
Soyo was undoubtedly someone special to Sakiko, and despite what had occurred, they had managed to remain friends, as well as business partners.
She smiled at Anon, "Well, I can take that to be complimentary as Soyo is remarkable".
"She really is" Anon agreed, hearing a softness return in Sakiko's tone, "So I'm glad we're all back together".
"As am I" Sakiko said earnestly, "We should all meet soon".
Anon was looking forward to it, to returning to the life she had left even though most things had changed.
However, there were still some feelings that hadn't dispersed, and some which had flourished.
***
Over the course of the weeks, Anon would meet with Soyo and Sakiko when the time was available, more so since she was busy preparing her campaign which took up most of her energy.
Through spontaneous meetups and meals, the trio gradually began to fall back into old patterns of comfort and connection, dotted with awkward silences and lingering glances, as well as a subtle inquietude.
Whilst Anon was doing a location search, she would run into Soyo and Sakiko in the area, the two coaxing her into having a quick drink with them at a nearby cafe before she had to leave.
Soyo was somewhat intrigued as she watched Anon rapidly texting on her phone while putting away the location shoots in her bag, her glasses slipping down her nose in doing so.
Before she could stop herself, Soyo moved forward and slid them back up her nose while Sakiko helped to zip up the bag and the actions made Anon laugh wryly.
"I'm sorry, we had a cancellation for a shoot this morning so this next place was found last minute".
"Nothing to apologise for" Sakiko insisted, "Not to mention that we did drag you here".
"Funny since it used to be the other way around" the brunette added.
"Come on, Soyo, don't act like you didn't enjoy it".
"Debatable".
Anon's feigned indignation made them chuckle as she finally relaxed for a moment, but Anon knew she would have to leave soon.
"Anyway, what were you two up to?" Anon asked as she stirred her coffee, "Also, people are staring at you".
Just as Anon said this, the duos presence had garnered attention but neither Soyo nor Sakiko paid much heed to it, especially the latter. The Togawas elusive head and a notable president in the Japanese markets being together was bound to garner attention.
"We had a meeting with a possible company to host our next event, the unveiling of a new service in the entertainment industry".
"It is to be held in July, so time is of the essence for us too".
"Your time management has always been impeccable, Soyo, I have no concerns regarding timing".
Sakiko and Soyo exchanged a glance and it was somewhat startling to see them so on the same page, concinnous in every way.
For a moment, it almost felt like Anon wasn't there as they began to discuss to meeting before catching themselves and stopped the conversation, apologising simultaneously.
Whether it was these abrupt lunches or gatherings with the others, there was something in the air amongst the three, a coalescing of the past and the future.
***
One evening when they were available, Taki, Umiri and Mutsumi joined them for a late dinner.
Anon and Sakiko would arrive first at the restaurant and Soyo would join them, waiting for the other three to arrive.
They were seated in the lobby, the conversation turning to the past 3 years, switching from Anon's time abroad, to Sakiko and Soyo's endeavours when Sakiko touched upon a sore spot.
"So, the two of you were not in touch with each other at all?" Sakiko said, stunned at this.
Anon looked at Soyo who avoided her gaze, "I guess so. I mean, we were really busy and then there was the time difference".
"Anon, you do not have to make excuses for me" Soyo said sharply.
"I wasn't, I'm just saying it how it was" she insisted, silver eyes narrowed, "I get it too, why you couldn't stay in touch".
Sakiko tried to steer the conversation away, now realising that there was something deeper as to why Anon and Soyo hadn't stayed in touch, piquing her own curiosity about something else.
Thankfully, the other trio had just arrived and the topic was dismissed entirely, but the tension was still there.
As they were seated, Sakiko made sure to sit between Mutsumi and Taki while on the side were Umiri, Anon and Soyo.
It was almost too obvious to see how Anon and Soyo were trying to keep their distance, neither chancing a glance at each other while they listened, occasionally speaking. It got to a point where evenTaki picked up on it and followed Soyo into the restrooms after their main course and were waiting for dessert.
She found Soyo fixing her make up as she leaned back against the sink, "How long are you gonna be angry at her for?".
"I am not angry at her".
"Tell that to your face".
Soyo rolled her eyes, "I have no idea what you mean".
"Sure you don't. I don't get why you agreed to doing this if you were going to make it obvious that you and Anon have your issues".
"Saki asked me" Soyo replied, checking her lipstick, "I thought that having you, Umiri and Mutsumi would make things more bearable but clearly I was wrong".
Rubbing her temple with a finger, Taki could only sigh, "Bearable, huh..so you're mad at yourself instead of Anon" she realised, "Because of the last time you talked".
Soyo didn't need a reminder since it was already embedded into her mind; she could envision that deary day and the last time she saw Anon.
Lowering her hands to wash them again, she didn't reply as Taki said, "You're going to have to talk to her about it sooner or later, Soyo. Anon is back so get used to it".
A derisive scoff followed when Soyo met Taki's eyes, "Why? We both know she's probably going to leave again".
"You don't know that".
"We both do".
As much as Taki wanted to offer a rebuttal, she couldn't because she knew that Soyo had a point.
***
"Soyo, may I ask you something?".
The extra formalities had Soyo turn from the filing cabinets in Sakiko's office and look at the woman, "Why so formal, Saki?".
"Well, because it is not work related".
In front of their employees, Soyo didn't refer to Sakiko with her nickname but in private, they could drop some of their masks. It was reassuring for both to be able to do this, away from the prying eyes of others where they could dare to be vulnerable.
Still, Soyo was taken aback by Sakiko's shift in demeanour as she placed the file down and went to the oak desk, taking a seat on it as Sakiko remained in her chair, looking up at the brunette next to her.
"I take it that this is about the other night, that conversation between me and Anon".
Sakiko nodded, "Yes, but if you do not wish to discuss it, we do not have to".
Soyo shook her head, her hands resting on her thighs, trying to keep her fingers on her knees above her black pants.
It had been a while since she had stopped going for her fingers and she didn't want that habit to start again.
"What do you want to know?".
"Your relationship with Anon..it was more than just friends, was it not?".
Soyo stared out at the surrounding buildings, "We never got that far. I suppose you are right that it was more than friends, but there was an ambiguity between us".
One that she had placed herself.
Soyo recalled back to a particularly stormy night in their final year when Anon had stayed over.
She was watching the raindrops crash against her bedroom windows, the blinds open as the thunder and lighting appeared one after the other, causing her to jump.
It was early on the evening and yet, it felt like nightfall given how dark the skies were.
Soyo had her arms around her legs, folded up to her chest, her body tense but as soon as she felt a weight dip in her bed, she relaxed.
More so when arms wrapped around her and body was pressed to her back, that familiar voice close to her ear.
"It's okay, Soyorin, I'm here".
Soyo curled within herself and she wasn't sure if she was trying to escape her mood or Anon's embrace, but she still soaked in Anon's warmth, her hair blending with her own as she reached for her hand.
"I'm fine".
"You're not fine, you're shaking".
Soyo tried to still her body but it was too honest with Anon and it scared her senseless.
It had been almost three years since they met, so many ups and downs and yet, Anon never left her.
She took in a quick breath and turned her face slightly to look into silver eyes, so gentle yet caring and Soyo felt like she was melting.
Anon smiled, "I won't let go of you".
They were close enough to feel each other's lips, almost a kiss, just like so many occasions but they never crossed that line.
And they'd never have a chance to since Anon would soon leave.
A hand reached out, bringing Soyo out of her musings to see Sakiko's golden eyes on her, just solicitude in them.
Her heart was twisting around itself while she thought back to certain memories with Sakiko over the last three years, a similar comfort with someone else she cared so deeply for.
"It is in the past now. What happened or didn't happen back then has no place here anymore".
"If that is how you feel, then we do not have to discuss it anymore, Soyo, I do apologise for bringing it up".
"That's okay. It took me off guard since we barely talk about our personal lives".
"Perhaps we should" Sakiko said, moving her hand away from over Soyo's when someone knocked on her door, "Come in".
It was her assistant with some information so Soyo excused herself for a moment, thinking back to what Sakiko had just said.
She couldn't figure out the implications of that and it made her feel unsettled, more so than she already was with Anon's return.
***
Anon would visit Taki's live house one evening in the weekend and it was almost strange to be in such an environment, the nostalgia striking her again.
It was a small and intimate location where Taki oversaw her team of dedicated employees as they all began to set up for the night.
"Never thought that you'd be the kind boss, Rikki".
"Keep talking and I'm going to throw this cymbal at you".
Anon laughed as she helped set up the microphones, "Ah, there she is" she winked, "But you've done really well with this place. It's perfect".
The drummer was cognizant enough to see how earnest Anon was being as she stood up from behind the drum kit and looked around, a fondness swelling in her chest while she recalled all the bands whom had performed here, as well as the many faces in the audience who were always around.
It wasn't easy and with Umiri's help, the dream to own such a place had become a reality.
"You stuck with the blue and white theme".
A comment, not a question from Anon who was looking around with a smile, thinking back to those days where their band had found leverage and a steady following.
She couldn't help the flashbacks to their band days, filled with youthful dreams and unspoken affections.
"We need to get this set list ready" Taki panted after taking a break on the drums when the last song was finished, "Something feels missing".
Tomori and Raana had sat down next to each other whilst Anon removed her guitar and handed them water before taking the bottles to Taki and then Soyo.
Soyo nodded her thanks and opened her bottle, taking a sip before handing it to Anon, "Drink".
"Huh, I've got my own" Anon said and motioned to the bottle near her hoodie on the floor.
"It's almost finished".
Anon tentatively took the bottle, her actions almost shy, "Thanks, Soyorin".
She took a sip whilst Soyo addressed Taki's query, "It's autumn now, why don't we add ‘Yokaze'? That always has a feeling that matches this time of the year".
"Hm, it's gentle" Raana said, her guitar in her arms.
Taki mulled it over and realised that Soyo was right and gave her a look that Soyo shook her head at, "It's just a suggestion".
The drummer smirked at Anon as they exchanged a glance, at how far Soyo had come.
As testing as the years had been, MyGO!!!!! had become the home they had all dreamt of.
Anon smiled as she snapped out of her reverie when Taki spoke up, "I couldn't have it as anything but that".
"Sentimental Rikki is adorable".
That earned a punch to Anon's arm as Anon laughed while they continued with their work until opening time.
She had made friends in London but her bandmates and Ave Mujica's, and the connection they all shared couldn't be replicated.
The live house became packed as the hours went on and Anon stayed for drinks, enjoying the bands on stage and thinking back to the last time she had played her guitar. It had been too long, occasionally strumming it in her apartment in London but never daring to play it fully.
As she was sat near the bar, arms snaked around her shoulders and a body pressed onto her back.
"Anon!".
It was none other than Nyamu and Mutsumi, surprised to see the duo here and already their presence was attracting the attention of others.
"Hey, Nyamuchi, Mutsumi! How are you both?".
"Good" Mutsumi said softly, "Used to being back?".
Anon grinned as they both sat in front of her, "Not yet, but its been nice so far. Are you guys together to shoot that new drama?".
"Yeah, she's playing my love interest" Nyamu winked, pointing at Mutsumi, "It's about time that we get to be sweet with each other on camera and off camera".
"Nyamu fought for the role".
"I heard there was a lot of tough competition" Anon recalled as Nyamu bought them all drinks.
Nyamu put her arm around the other actress's shoulder, "Well, I can't blame them since Mutsumi would be their co-star. Too bad, that role always belonged to me" Nyamu said, and then moved her lips closer to Mutsumi's ear, "Like you do".
Even in the dimmed lights, Anon could see that Mutsumi was blushing a tad which was endearing, and it made her wonder if the public had figured out that they were dating yet.
Anon smiled as the next band caught their attention and the crowd was on their feet, moving along which resulted in Anon being pulled to the floor by Nyamu while Taki kept Mutsumi company.
It was like Anon's return had brought back the spark to reconnect the group.
"You're happy she's back, Taki" Mutsumi simply commented, "What about Soyo?".
"They seem okay, but you know how it is with Soyo, you can't tell even though she doesn't do what she used to" Taki said, "She was pissed when Anon left".
Mutsumi did have the vivid memories of Soyo at an almost loss when Anon went to London, like she had reverted back to the Soyo of their first year.
Slowly but surely, Soyo had adjusted to life without Anon, more so when she worked up the ranks of the company, along with working with Sakiko.
She wondered if things would change now that Anon was back, especially between Sakiko and Soyo.
***
If someone asked Soyo why she felt inclined to attend a meeting set up by someone at Anon's company with hers, one that she herself didn't need to attend, Soyo wouldn't be able to give a direct answer.
It was the kind of correspondence that someone in the advertising and marketing team would take as opposed to the president herself.
And yet, here she was being given a tour by one of the managers who was eager to stay on her good side in order to form a contract with Soyo's company who would provide the funds for a new line.
"Here we have the costume design department. Our designers work alongside the influences to create an outfit for their video, ensuring that everything is in order".
Soyo and the manager walked into an open space with many people around, workstations set up and lines of clothes and wardrobes situated on either side of the room.
"The current theme is a spring aesthetic that provides a calming ambience".
When Soyo caught sight of that familiar pink hair, she felt anything but calm.
Anon was focused on her work, talking to a fashion influencer as they pooled over many outfits on the table in front of them, the discussion serious and somewhat tense.
It was difficult for Soyo to believe that this was the same Anon as before.
But as soon as Anon saw her and that silly smile returned to her face, Soyo almost felt relieved.
At Soyo's request, Anon would then take over the tour after taking Soyo to get something to eat in the cafeteria where other employees were taking their breaks too.
"I thought I was seeing things" Anon said as she and Soyo walked to a table, each with tray of their food and drink, "I was told that the marketing director would be coming by, not you. How did that even happen?".
Soyo prepared her tea, "Considering that this would be a new company we do business with, I thought it would be better to see for myself just how it operates".
"And, how did we do?".
"Well, some of the staff could do with some work".
Soyo's little smirk was present and Anon had to laugh at the woman's attitude, "Wow, sounds like our contractor is a harsh judge of character" she said, "Guess I'll have to watch my back in case she sends me back to London".
"Would you want to go back?" Soyo asked, even though she didn't intend to.
Perhaps she wouldn't like the answer which is why she didn't want to hear it, knowing it wouldn't redress what had happened.
Anon sat back and stirred some sugar into her tea, her eyes still on Soyo, "Maybe one day? I can't say I'm thinking about it now since I only got back a few weeks ago. I'm not sure I'm even used to being here yet".
"Really? You seem at ease".
"Maybe it's different with you" Anon said and then quickly added, "And the others".
Soyo didn't look away, "I see. Knowing your impulsive side, who knows when you'll decide to disappear".
"Soyo, I didn't disappear".
"Close enough".
Anon grit her teeth and leaned forward, "I'm sorry, okay? I didn't think that me leaving would bother you this much..I mean, you always kept me at arms length".
"I had my reason. That aside, would you have stayed even if I asked?".
The accusatory blue eyes were sharp, almost cutting Anon to the core and this was the last place she wanted to have this conversation, "That's the thing, you never would ask".
As much as Soyo wanted to rebuff the remark, she could see the lassitude take over Anon's expression as she focused on the steam emitting from the coffee in front of her as she brought it to her lips.
Even Soyo herself couldn't deny what Anon had said, but it still didn't efface the betrayal she felt when Anon left.
"But you know..".
Soyo wasn't expecting Anon to continue the conversation, watching a flicker of a smile form but there was something lugubrious about it.
"I missed you, Soyo. Not a day went by that I didn't think about you".
It wasn't an admission that the woman was expecting, but Anon had said it clearly.
"Hey, was it the same for you?".
Soyo's brain was scrambling to stay behind her guards, to make sure she wouldn't say something that she would regret but Anon wouldn't look away, needing to hear it.
Yet, Soyo couldn't bring herself to say it, "I have to go".
With that, Soyo stood up and left as Anon's gaze followed her out of the building.
"Who is running away now?" she thought to herself.
Perhaps it was wishful thinking on Anon's part to hope that she would receive a direct response from Soyo, and yet, she held onto the idea.
***
It was inevitable how in her long absence that things had changed drastically, but there were certain details about Sakiko and Soyo's renewed friendship that Anon was becoming too aware of.
In the three years that Soyo and Sakiko had become close after Sakiko's return, what exactly had changed between them?
The answer would be both discomfiting and painful for Anon when she was finally illuminated to it but when she reflected back, Anon would realise that it had always been there.
She arrived at Taki's live house one night when most of the former bandmates would be free, including Sakiko and Soyo whom were hidden away in a booth to not draw any unwanted attention.
When Anon greeted the others at the bar and then made her way to the booth, she was surprised by how close the two were sitting next to each other.
Two individuals that Anon knew to prefer their personal space.
"Sorry I'm late" she said and sat down on the other side of Soyo, keeping some distance.
"It's okay. Did something happen at work?" Soyo asked.
Anon sat back after taking a swig of her drink and she noticed that neither women were drinking anything alcohol as she went onto cavil about her dilemma, "The usual last minute headaches. We're almost finished with Nyamu's campaign so the focus will soon be on the joint project between us in preparation for the event" she said, "You haven't been to any of the meetings lately, Soyo".
"I have been meaning to but we have a few things going on elsewhere in the company".
"Not to mention the projects you have aligned with us" Sakiko added, her golden eyes on Soyo when she glanced her way, "With so much to do, please ensure that you are getting rest".
Soyo smiled, "I am" she insisted, "More so since you are keeping me in line, apparently".
"When you word it like that.." Sakiko chuckled, tone lowering, "I have no choice but to continue. By no choice, it means that I want to, Soyo".
Under the eclipsed lights of the live house, Anon was suddenly all too aware of Sakiko's intense, almost possessive gaze towards Soyo.
She took a moment to process what she was seeing, the vibrancy of gold almost pulsing, drawing Soyo in.
It made Anon feel uncomfortable so she tried to deter the conversation, maybe remind the two that she was still here as she spoke up.
"Well, Soyo's birthday is in like a week. Hopefully she'll be able to relax for that day at least".
Soyo faced her way, expression soft, "I didn't think you would remember".
"How could I forget?" Anon replied, "It's you".
The brunette had to take a quick sip of her water to clear her head as the words from both Anon and Sakiko were sticking to her mind.
She didn't know what to think but tried to remain composed, "I'm not sure I'll be able to do much on the day due to work".
"Come on, you're allowed one day off" Anon grinned, wanting to nudge Soyo but refrained, "It will be good for you".
"Soyo's unwavering dedication is unmatched, Anon, which is why she was able to achieve her objectives effortlessly".
While it would have been a simple comment from Sakiko, to Anon, it felt too loaded.
"I get that" she managed to reply, "I'm just saying it would be nice to be able to see her that day. Especially since we haven't celebrated any birthdays together since I left".
Sakiko's smile was a little devious as she looked at Anon, "Soyo has been able to celebrate them with me, rest assured".
The implications were as clear as day which furthered the unsettling feeling Anon's in chest, more so since there was no denying it from Soyo.
This conversation alone would lead Anon to suspecting the scope of Sakiko's feelings, and perhaps, their mutual history since she had been gone.
***
Anon would fall deeper into her own realisations in regards to her feelings for Soyo as the days went by, occupying her mind far too often as much as she tried to inveigh it.
What she had assumed to have been buried away to fade into nothingness wasn't the case at all, and not even 8 years apart had effaced those feelings.
As she wiped the steam from the bathroom mirror after taking a shower one evening, Anon stared at her own reflection, the strain etched into her features, the thoughts of Soyo breaking apart the walls that had been secured and bound after graduation.
"Even now, I still can't forget what we could've been, huh".
She said it in a diminutive tone as she left the bathroom and went to her room where she got changed, leaving the towel around her neck while she wrestled with these dormant thoughts which were now erupting free.
Maybe it was a response to Sakiko, perhaps she felt like she was losing what she had with Soyo because of her close proximity to Sakiko, thus leading to her recalling what they had.
How easy it would be to dismiss everything via that excuse but that wasn't the case.
Being in Soyo's presence again, basking in her quiet strength and intelligence, now amplified by her success, drew Anon in even more and it was a force that was nonpareil.
She fell back onto her bed after sitting down and blindly reached for her phone, her fingers scrolling through her contact list to find Soyo's number.
It was late but she needed hear Soyo's voice, now more than ever.
Anon waited a few second before Soyo answered and she sounded awake already so that was reassuring.
"Anon?".
"Hey, sorry to call so late".
"Is everything okay?".
Anon paused, scrambled for a response that didn't consist of the words, "No, I'm not okay and you're to blame for it. It's always you, always making me want something that I can't have because you won't let it happen between us".
The woman closed her eyes and took in a quick breath, "Yeah, I won't keep you long but I just wanted to..".
Soyo waited for a response, shuffling before she sat up in bed, "When you're this hesitant, it's usually a bad sign".
"Maybe I'm just being dramatic".
"That is nothing new" Soyo all but scoffed in a lighthearted way.
"I didn't hear any complaints when we spent all those nights talking on the phone like this when neither of us could sleep" Anon chuckled, staring at the ceiling again, "Do you remember, Soyo?".
"I remember".
The nights where she was the loneliest, the nights she was consumed by her own insecurities, the nights she wanted to cry.
Anon was there, be it in person or on the phone, being the torch that she was to bring her out of the dark.
"When you left" Soyo started quietly, "I would think back to those times and it made me realise that they wouldn't be happening again".
"They are happening again" Anon stated and sat up, brushing her hair back, "I'm still here".
A beat of silence passed before Soyo spoke up, "For how long?".
Anon didn't know how to respond to that and she heard a soft laugh from Soyo, like she knew the answer herself.
"Goodnight, Anon".
Before the woman could say anything, the call ended and Anon was left staring at her phone, her eyes on the wallpaper that had never changed despite the change in phones she had had over the years.
A photo of her and Soyo together during a band outing in their third year on a warm summer's day.
Soyo hadn't expected Anon to sneak up behind her and wrap her arms around her waist, flashing her signature smile as Taki was the one to take the photo.
Despite the irritation on Soyo's expression, anyone looking at the photo could see that this is exactly where Soyo wanted to be.
Anon let her phone rest against her chest, wondering if she could be the place Soyo called home again.
***
On the evening of Soyo's birthday, she had managed to leave the office early since she had promised Anon that she would make some time to celebrate despite the way their last call ended.
Not only that, Sakiko had also gently encouraged her to do something, more so since all the band members would be able to attend the party that Anon, Nyamu and Mutsumi had organised at their place.
"I forgot that she does not do small scale" Soyo could only grin as she looked at the fully decorated living area, all sorts of lighting and decorations present.
"Anon doesn't know what those words mean" Taki sighed as she helped Umiri in the kitchen, setting all the food out, "She went all out".
Soyo could see that much as she wandered around the apartment, in awe of how much Anon had prepared as the culprit in question came out from of the balcony, leaving it open since the late spring warmth was lingering.
"So, how did I do, Soyo?".
"Still fishing for compliments? You haven't changed".
The back and forth persiflage amongst the group would continue when Sakiko arrived with Hatsune and Mana, more greetings going around as the celebrations commenced.
Dinner went by smoothly as everyone was engaged in the conversation and a while after, Soyo was showered with gifts.
It was true that the birthdays continued but with Anon's presence, it felt even more fulfilling, like she had brought back something which had been missing.
But it went back to that question, how long would she be here for?
When things quieted down and the alcohol had caused the intended buzz, Anon tapped Soyo's shoulder whilst they were in the kitchen, indicating for her to follow her onto the balcony, so Soyo did as asked.
She herself had drank a little and her cheeks were florid as they stood by the railing, the wind rustling their hair and dresses.
"Did you have fun tonight?".
Soyo wanted to respond sarcastically but found that she couldn't, glancing at the woman next to her, "I did, Anon. Thank you for going out of your way to set this up. It's not often we all got to gather like this".
"Rikki managed to fish Raana out too".
"You make it sound like she collected Raana by rummaging through bins in the alleyway".
"If there was a cat there, you can bet Raana would check".
The brunette couldn't even refute that, laughing as Anon moved closer to her, their eyes meeting.
"You look beautiful tonight, Soyo" Anon said fondly, "And you're smiling too".
The woman glanced away, "Probably the alcohol".
Anon smiled as she reached for Soyo's hand and that was when Soyo noticed that Anon had retrieved a box from her bag that was on the table.
"There was something else I wanted to give you" she said and took out a watch, a simple silver band with a small clock face, sleek in design, "I hope you like it".
Anon carefully fastened in around Soyo's left wrist, clasping it together as she appraised how good it looked.
"Anon, you didn't have to".
"I wanted to" she said, her hands still on Soyo's arm, "I noticed that you weren't wearing one".
Soyo looked into Anon's silver eyes, "Is that the only reason?".
"Maybe" Anon said with a slight grin, lowering their hands, "What other reason could there be?".
Before Soyo could answer, Anon pulled her into an embrace, the two wrapping around each other like it felt instinctive and not even Soyo could refuse this, nor did she want to.
"Thank you" she whispered, lips close to Anon's ear, "Not just for the gift, but for tonight".
Anon held on closer, her eyes closing as she sunk into Soyo's embrace.
It was the perfect moment, just the two of them alone, at least out there because from within the apartment, someone had seen the entire exchange.
She walked away, a hand pressed to her chest where a dull ache had formed, as well as a fear she hadn't anticipated.
***
A few weeks would pass by as the summer commenced, a stifling heat already encompassing the city long into the evening.
Working away late into the night were Soyo and Sakiko at the former's office since the upcoming event was close to being unveiled, a new venture that struck into the construction markets.
This was already one of Togawa Groups ventures so taking Soyo's company under the wing had already made a monumental impact since all eyes were on them. There was a lot at stake for Soyo as she didn't want to disappoint Sakiko as it would be a reflection on the woman herself, so she couldn't afford to be distracted.
The time she spent with Anon had been increasing but she still didn't know what it was that she wanted, so keeping herself busy was the best option.
However, a dire complication would be added to Soyo's life.
Sakiko put her documents down and got up from the table they were working on, needing to steady her head as Soyo called out to her.
"Saki, what is it?".
"I just needed a moment".
Soyo placed her pen down, her eyes laced with concern, "We have been at this for a while so let's call it a night".
Sakiko turned to watch the woman tidy up, her arms behind her back as she took Soyo in whilst the piece of jewellery on her wrist caught Sakiko's eyes.
Seeing the watch made the memories of that night resurface.
The intimacy of that hug was more than any intimacy she and Soyo had ever shared.
Anon was as bold as ever, crashing through Soyo's defences so easily and Sakiko couldn't help the envy and fear crawl thought her veins.
She realised that the prospect of losing Soyo had become far too real.
There was only one thing she could do to perhaps cling onto the iota of leverage she had over Anon.
Soyo stood up and approached Sakiko when she hadn't said anything and just stared at her, the gold of her eyes too pensive and she hated seeing the strain, like Sakiko was going to crumble again.
"Something happened, didn't it? Is it about the new project, Saki? Did I mess up somewhere?".
Sakiko shook her head and smiled a little, "I believe I may have been the one to mess up".
The answer perplexed Soyo further but even then, she didn't care and would do what she could do help the other woman.
"Tell me what happened and we can fix this together" she insisted, "You can trust me".
"Together" Sakiko repeated, "Perhaps I realised too late, but together is what I want with you, Soyo".
Sakiko, feeling threatened by Anon's connection to Soyo, decided to make a raw and heartfelt confession of her long-held love for Soyo, no longer able to hold it back.
She reached for Soyo's left hand, "Soyo, back then, it was what you wanted, yes? Along with CRYCHIC, something more to happen between us? To be together?".
The brunette was visibly startled, "Why are you bringing this up now, Saki?".
"Because I want the same too".
It took a moment for Soyo to let those words in, still not quite believing it, "What are you saying?" she whispered.
Sakiko took a step closer to the taller woman, eyes up and staring into blue, "I..want to be with you, Soyo. Not just as friends and business partners. These last three years together, I realised that what I felt for you hadn't really disappeared. Everything from the past has simply amplified into this thing I cannot ignore".
She took both of Soyo's hands into hers and lifted it between them, the sunset being washed away as night fell from the windows behind her.
"I thought that you didn't want to pursue such a relationship with me. I mean, we danced around it for so long".
"You are right, but I needed to make sure because the last thing I want is to hurt you again".
This wasn't something that Soyo had been expecting Sakiko to say and yet, it was happening and what scared her was that there was nothing but sincerity in Sakiko's eyes and words.
"I cannot keep this concealed anymore, Soyo. Tell me, is it the same for you?".
The brunette had been caught off guard, her expression depicting a mixture of shock and discomfort and her usual ability to discern had evicted itself.
She didn't know what she was feeling right now and with the addition of Anon back in her life, Soyo was further subsumed into a chasm of uncertainty.
Slowly, Soyo released her hands from Sakiko's, the watch feeling heavy on her wrist while she gently rejected Sakiko.
"I'm sorry, this feels so sudden and I.." Soyo said, her tone laced with guilt, "I can't do this".
"Is it because of Anon?".
"No, not really. I just never expected you to think of me in that way again and I don't know how to process it".
Sakiko didn't need to hear anymore, nor did she want to see that sympathetic gaze from Soyo, "I see. I shall take my leave now then, Soyo. Have a good evening".
She swiftly moved passed Soyo and packed up with frightening speed as Soyo tried to reach for her.
"Saki!".
But Sakiko didn't listen and left the room, the rejection reverberating in her mind, the words not leaving her even when she reached her car and scrambled to press the unlock button before finally managing to get in.
Her hands gripped the steering wheel as she was shuddering, feeling her pride and heart shatter at the same time.
She was always so guarded, always did what she could to protect herself but for Soyo, she found the courage to open up but it ended up in vain.
***
It wouldn't be till an event hosted by another company that Sakiko and Soyo would see each other again, along with Anon.
Sakiko had delegated any tasks involved in their joint project to others and it didn't hinder the progress, but Soyo had tried to get in touch with her but Sakiko dismissed all attempts.
She couldn't bear to face Soyo again, feeling humiliated and heartbroken, the amalgam of emotions making her feel bitter and it was quietly building.
When Sakiko was talking to some others, Anon approached her after getting Sakiko's attention without interrupting her.
Sakiko wanted to remain on good terms with Anon since she still considered her a friend, and technically Anon was unaware of what had happened between herself and Soyo.
"Good evening, Anon".
The woman smiled, "Hey, I haven't seen you in a while" she said, "How are you?".
Sakiko kept her neutral expression in place, "I am well, thank you. How are you?".
"Busy" Anon motioned at the lanyard around her neck, "We got access to this party for a magazine issue. You know, to see what all the elites are wearing" she chuckled, appraising Sakiko's look, "I hope I can get an interview with you later, along with pictures, Sakiko, you look amazing".
It was effortless for Anon to be honest, something that irked Sakiko as she wondered again if Anon was a reason as to why Soyo said no to her.
Their history was just as intense as hers with Soyo.
"If the time allows, I would be happy to do".
Before she could say anything, Sakiko saw Soyo on the other side of the room and she was walking towards them, looking just as gorgeous in her dress.
Anon clearly thought the same so Sakiko excused herself, "I have elsewhere to be for now, Anon".
"Wait, Soyo's coming over. Are you okay?".
"Yes, why do you ask?".
Anon moved in closer, "You seem upset. And you haven't been meeting with us since a few weeks ago".
"I have been rather occupied, so perhaps we can meet another time".
Sakiko didn't wait for a response and quickly left the area, calling for her delegates who went to introduce her to people whom were eager to speak to her.
"Where is she going?".
Glancing at Soyo, Anon deduced that something had evidently happened between the two, but she wasn't sure if it was personal or business related.
"She didn't say" Anon replied, taking Soyo's arm, "Feel up to socialising or do you want to sneak away for a while?".
The brunette motioned to her pass, "Can you?".
Anon grinned and pulled Soyo away, but not before grabbing a bottle of wine and two glasses and exiting into the patio area of the venue.
Watching, Sakiko saw the whole thing and it was as if the answer could not be anymore glaring at this point.
There had clearly been a shift in Anon and Soyo's relationship, the reason why Soyo had rejected her.
The dusk was just setting and after walking around for a while, the two women found a gazebo in the garden where they settled into, enjoying a few glasses in comfortable silence.
Anon didn't rush Soyo, tackling her own emotions and she was content to just sit here with her.
However, Soyo, still rattled by Sakiko's confession, needed to confide in Anon because she was feeling the immense pressure and loneliness of her position which had been highlighted again.
"Saki confessed to me".
Anon was in the midst of drinking, just about managing to not choke as she looked at Soyo as if her statement was aberrant, "She did?".
"I..couldn't return the feelings".
This was extremely perplexing and Anon could see how rueful the brunette was feeling but she didn't know what to say either, whether Soyo wanted comfort or advice.
Soyo took a long drink before sighing, "It's funny, isn't it? I wanted Saki so much. Whether it was in CRYCHIC or as mine, I would have done anything for her. I did do anything for her".
Knowing what Soyo was referencing, Anon chose not to say it but instead asked, "Don't you feel then same anymore, Soyo?".
"I..don't know. She was all I ever wanted and now I had the chance, but I rejected her".
Soyo finished her drink and stood up, her arms holding onto the wall of the gazebo while the zephyr blew through her hair and the silhouette of her took Anon's breath away.
She drank her glass too and then got up, "I'm sorry".
"You should be" Soyo suddenly said, an anger slithering into her voice and her eyes watering, "Again, you crashed back into my life and changed everything".
"Look, I know I left but this thing between you and Sakiko has nothing to do with me".
"You cannot still be that much of an idiot".
"Soyo, don't speak to me like that" Anon frowned, not standing for it but she softened her tone, "I know you're hurting, and I know I have made mistakes too, but I'm not fighting with you, okay? I want to help you, however you need it".
She couldn't stand to see Soyo crying and moved in close, using her palms to wipe away her tears as she looked into blue eyes.
Soyo reached for Anon's wrists, holding them gently, "I'm sorry".
"It's okay, just know I'm here for you, Soyo. I'm not going anywhere".
Anon kept her hands on Soyo's face, her eyes gentle as she smiled, catching another stream of tears with her thumbs.
As much as Soyo wanted to push Anon away, she couldn't do it and instead moved her head forward to rest on the other woman's shoulder, a fragile intimacy beginning to form between them.
Or rather, it was breaking free from the confines that Soyo and Anon had placed it in.
***
I'll do anything.
Those words that Soyo had desperately said to her during that night in the park spiralled around Sakiko's mind as she paced the area of her study, her eyes fixated on nothing in particular.
It felt like those words had come back to devour and encumber her, taunt her before doing so.
Though she had her reasons for pushing Soyo away back then, it was humorous to think that if Soyo asked her that question now, Sakiko could easily say that she wanted her.
Mutsumi was watching the woman, knowing that look on her face, "Saki, you have to let this go".
An email alert from her laptop made Sakiko move around the desk and check what was written.
It was a reminder of the join project between Soyo and Anon, the event that would display the usage of technology with clothing. The event was said to attract significant attention and many of the notable press outlets were going to be there.
Checking the time, Sakiko picked up her phone and at this point, Mutsumi stood up and walked to the front of the desk, her golden eyes laced with concern.
"What are you doing?".
"Taking a leaf out of Nyamu's book" Sakiko replied as the call was answered, "Hello? It is Togawa. Yes, I have a favour to ask of you".
Whatever Sakiko was planning wasn't going to end well because when she was like this, wounded and strategically minded, Sakiko was a force to be reckoned with.
So using her family's influence, she would indirectly challenge and trammel Soyo and Anon's project, not to harm them, but to send a message.
"A diversion is all I need, for severals hours and they can all return after this timeframe. Is this understood?".
The voice on the other end confirmed and then Sakiko lowered her phone down, her hands remaining on the desk.
"Saki, if you do this, you will hurt Soyo" Mutsumi warned, "Anon doesn't deserve this either".
"I just want Soyo to understand" Sakiko simply said, "To do nothing would be impossible".
"No, that is exactly what you should do".
Sakiko scoffed and turned away from her friend, her feet taking her towards the windows and her eyes on the night sky whilst she pondered on what she was doing.
"I can't let it end like this, Mutsumi, I made that mistake before when I should have told Soyo the truth sooner".
"I get that, but this isn't the way to do it".
Sakiko sighed, her expression distant, "I have no choice, I just need her to understand".
With any luck, it would lead to Soyo coming to her for help, giving them the opportunity to salvage the situation so that she could get Soyo to see how suited they are for each other.
***
The following morning, both Soyo and Anon's companies would be in utter shambles when they were notified that the press wouldn't be covering the event, and the venue they were meant to be holding it at suddenly became unavailable due to safety concerns.
Anon and Soyo were in the meeting room with Anon's director, the woman looking as exhausted as they were.
"It's the same answer everywhere" a colleague stressed after taking a call, "Apparently the major news outlets have been given access to some high profile story. Also, the hall we were supposed to be hosting the event in have cited an electrical fault which means we have to move everything somewhere else now".
"Our PR and advertising team said the same" Soyo said, "We don't know how long this supposed meeting will take and the launch cannot be stalled"
"Press or no press, this has to continue" the director agreed.
Anon was focused on her phone and Soyo was concerned by the woman's gaze, "Anon?".
"Give me a second, we can figure this out".
"How?" the manager of marketing said, "These outlets are our main source for exposure".
"True, but they're not the only ones" Anon answered, "Time to call in a few favours".
Given Sakiko's attempt to create professional obstacles for the project, it forced Soyo to rely on Anon's creative solutions and support.
Anon looked at her boss, "We use our own marketing and PR department, Soyo's too, and we contact every other news outlet there is. Big or small. I asked the same of our old friends from the band days too".
"Wait, you did?".
"Yep, Kokoro was on board" Anon grinned, "Pastel*Palettes too" she waved her phone, "Their management gave them permission to perform as a special guest".
Those two names alone was enough to kick everyone into action and Soyo felt like she could breath again.
Anon grabbed her hand, "Let's go" she smiled, "I know we're not in the clear yet, but we've got this, together".
The support and confidence from Anon was infections and it was exactly what Soyo needed right now, showcasing how reliable Anon was.
Sakiko's meddling had inadvertently deepened the bond between Anon and Soyo, the duo working together with their teams to move the event into a venue provided by Kokoro.
Still, Soyo was wondering what could have caused this string of events so suddenly, as in overnight, but she wouldn't have to wait.
Mortis would find her during the event and reveal everything.
***
By the end of the day, after saving the event, Soyo would go to Sakiko's office to confront her gauche behaviour.
She was enervated and irate, but mainly disappointed because this wasn't like Sakiko at all.
Out of the two of them, Soyo knew that she herself was more likely to pull off something as backhanded as this.
She barged into Sakiko's office, ignoring her assistant and shut the door, "What the hell were you thinking?!".
Calmly, Sakiko closed her laptop and stood up, daring to approach Soyo despite seeing the anger in her eyes and the way her fists were clenching.
"I need more information".
Soyo grabbed Sakiko by her blazer, "Mortis told me everything".
"Of course she did" Sakiko said, gripping Soyo's shoulders, "I knew she would".
"Mutsumi tried to stop you.." Soyo seethed, "Is that how far you were willing to go to punish me? Even hurting Anon in the process?".
"There was no lasting damage was there? Soyo, listen to me" she said softly, "I just wanted you to understand that I can do anything for you. I'm sorry for what I did but it was the only way to get you here in order for me to explain".
"Explain what? That you're not above sabotaging?".
"You used the same tactics before, on Anon herself".
"And not a day goes by where I don't regret it" Soyo said, suddenly letting go of Sakiko and stepping back, "I did it for you".
Sakiko could see the cogs turning in the brunette's head, like a realisation, a missing piece had finally clicked together.
It wa something Soyo had never admitted to herself in terms of how she had treated Anon and it was basically brushed under the rug, more so by Soyo keeping Anon at arms length.
But Anon never gave up on her.
Anon's reason for leaving had many layers to it but Soyo knew that she was the most detrimental.
The crushing feeling of emptiness had disappeared the moment Anon had returned.
Soyo glanced at Sakiko, her voice resolute but tired, "Saki, I'm sorry for hurting you, for not feeling the same but this ends now. If you try to do something to Anon-".
"She was not who I wanted to hurt, nor did I want to hurt you".
"It doesn't matter anymore" Soyo sighed and fixed her clothes, "Figure out what you want to do with our joint projects..if you want to continue them or not. I'm fine with either but if you do something like this again, then I won't be able to let it go so easily".
Soyo took Sakiko in for a moment, realising that the feelings she once had for Sakiko were fading away, had hidden what she felt for Anon.
And now, everything was clear to Soyo.
Anon was the one she would do anything for.
***
After the confrontation with Sakiko, Soyo felt drained but at the same time, refreshed, like she had been able to cut away the chain pulling her down.
She had forgotten that that is how her relationship with Sakiko had started and would continue, and it was because of a certain force of nature that she was finally able to get out of the fog which always seemed to lure her in.
Soyo unlocked the door of her apartment, concerned by how quiet it was so she quickly stepped inside and looked around for Anon.
What if she is gone?
The thought terrified her as she walked around the sofa to find a leg sprawled out, and then a body being bathed in the orange sunset.
Soyo was both relieved and exasperated at the sight of Anon passed out, hair ruffled like her dress, surrounded by empty coffee cups, her laptop and her phone above her head.
Considering how much damage control Anon had to do, it was no wonder she had crashed out like this.
The sight was reminiscent of their days in the band together, the late nights, the preparation, the warmth Soyo felt to be with the others and it all happened again because of the sleeping mass of pink on her floor.
Crouching down next to her, Soyo took off Anon's glasses and placed them on the table, wondering what to do as she didn't want to wake Anon but sleeping like this for too long couldn't be comfortable.
"Anon".
The flicker of long lashes would go on for a few seconds before silver eyes, still laced with sleep, opened.
Soyo held back a laugh at the askew hair whilst she poked Anon on the cheek, "Are you okay?".
"I'm 70% coffee, 20% blood and about 10% water" Anon chuckled and closed her eyes again, "I don't know if that's okay".
"No, probably not".
"But we made it".
Reaching for her phone, Anon unlocked it before handing it to Soyo and the woman was stunned to see the glowing reviews, the countless photos and the sheer number of mentions for both her own and Anon's company which showed the accruing traction.
There was numerous articles that were speculating how this would lead to further collaborations and events.
Soyo hadn't mentioned it to Anon yet as she had gotten a call on the way home from her director about the company becoming a potential partner for more of Anon’s own innovative projects.
"For the results to be this promising, it's something else" Soyo replied, her eyes scanning over the numbers, "You did so well, thinking and planning as quickly as you did, Anon".
"No, we did well" Anon corrected and managed to get up before she could shuffle backwards to the balcony window, patting the space next to her, "Did you manage to find out what went wrong?".
Soyo's expression soured as she moved to sit next to Anon, so the other woman didn't see it due to her hair falling to the side of her face before moving it back.
She couldn't tell Anon the truth of the matter, at least not right now.
Anon and Sakiko's friendship was something she hadn't wanted to intrude on and she knew Anon would be devastated by this, so for now, she would let it be.
"Just a miscommunication issue" she said, opting for a partial truth, "It will not happen again".
"I hope not, that was cutting things way too close and I really wanted this to work out for you".
"Your reputation and work would have been impacted too".
Anon glanced to the side, smiling at the brunette, "Maybe, I just wanted you to know that you can still rely on me" she said before adding, "Even if things have changed between us, I don't want you to think that I won't be here for you".
Saying what she needed to say, Anon rested her head back onto the window again whilst a silence lingered for a moment between them. The day had been testing and tiring so Anon was content to leave it as such because just being here with Soyo was enough.
There was still much left unsaid between them and now that Soyo had more clarity, perhaps it was time that she herself stopped running from what seemed to be inevitable.
The last encounter they had had before Anon left was agonising, more so because of herself than Anon, something she needed to apologise for, "Anon, I'm sorry".
"What for? This wasn't your fault".
"I mean..I'm sorry about the way I behaved the last time we met before you left".
Soyo felt the regret crawl through her while Anon reached for her hand, holding on while she was plunged into that evening, hoping to get to Anon but it had been too late.
As Soyo stared out of the windows in the airport, she struggled to catch her breath after her senses got the better of her, when the realisation that she wouldn't be seeing Anon for a lengthy time hit her.
What good was it to fixate on something that couldn't be changed, a regret that could not be undone?
However, her mad dash to the airport was futile, too late.
She looked up towards the airplanes which had ascended, the one now freely soaring ahead since she could not reach Anon in time.
Anon was gone.
The words ricocheted around Soyo’s mind as she stumbled backwards to take a seat on the chairs whilst her eyes never left the sight of the airplane, not until she could no longer see it.
She gripped the edge of the chair while the last encounter with Anon whirled around her mind, the raising of their voices, the tears, the insults.
If Soyo had known that she would eventually wake up and realise that she never wanted Anon to leave, then she wouldn't have let that be the last time they spoke.
But Soyo continued to underestimate her feelings for Anon till the very end.
They fought like always, and perhaps it was cathartic to know that that was the way their relationship would conclude.
She sat back and looked away from the windows, watching the summer nights roll in, just like the compunction churning away in her stomach.
What was she supposed to do now other than return back to her home, a dreary walk without Anon by her side, one she was meant to get used?
It burned just to think about it as her eyes stung, thinking back to insults she had directed at Anon so cruelly when Anon had brought up her plans to move to London again to pursue her designing career with the insistence that she would return.
And what was Soyo's response to that?
Why bother? You should just stay there.
The practice room fell silent the moment those words were uttered from her mouth, leaving Anon stunned, just like Taki, Raana and Tomori were.
Anon's weak smile said it all before she excused herself and left the room, the last time they would be near each other left in bitterness.
How Soyo loathed herself for saying something so stupid, so senseless, so cruel.
After that, there was no contact from Anon and it was only because Taki suddenly texted her the flight time and terminal that Soyo really thought about the situation.
If this was it, then there would be no going back, but she had taken up too much time in thinking about her relationship with Anon, leaving only hours before Anon's flight.
There was only one message from Anon, a finality.
Goodbye.
And Soyo reread it over and over, the tightness of her throat making it impossible to breath, the word hitting her square in the chest.
Anon was gone, their relationship, as ambiguous as it was, was over.
The hand in Soyo's brought the woman out of her anathema as another went to her cheek, turning her face.
Soyo was greeted with Anon's gentle expression, blurry due to her own tears, "I didn't give you a reason to want come back".
The only way Anon could explain to Soyo that the past was the past was to be direct and as concise as possible.
She leaned in and lessened the distance between them in every manner of the word, kissing Soyo till the surprise faded, till Soyo was kissing her back.
They turned to get better access till they were face to face, their arms winding around each other as the pent up emotions and regrets spilled freely, pressed between their lips over and over again.
Neither knew how many minutes had passed before they separated, their breathing slightly heavy as they let the moment simmer, the remnants of their overdue ardour glistening on their lips.
Anon moved her hands back to Soyo's face, her expression earnest as she smiled at her.
"But you've given me a reason to want to stay now, Soyorin".
It took a second for Soyo to process the words, each one melting her as she tightened her hands over Anon shoulders, "You finally said it".
"Oh, you mean the name you say you hate but secretly love?" Anon teased which earned her a light pinch, "Kidding" she laughed and pulled Soyo into her arms again.
Soyo didn't even pretend to want to escape the embrace whilst she settled her head on Anon's shoulder, her voice barely above a whisper when she asked, "Did you mean it, Anon? Will you stay?".
"I meant it, I want to stay here with you".
There was no hesitation from Anon when she responded, watching the skies burn a vivid orange and blue as the evening rolled in, a sky she couldn't wait to get used to seeing again, right here with Soyo.
