Work Text:
Beneath Playtime Co., something worse than a monster learned how to love.
The room was far too quiet.
Not a normal silence—an artificial one, carefully engineered. The kind of sickening stillness Playtime Co. deliberately created to slowly break the minds of whatever they kept imprisoned inside. The padded walls swallowed every breath, every rustle of fabric, every nervous tremor, until it felt as though the entire world was suffocating.
Marceline hated that place.
She hated the smell of old plastic mixed with dried blood.
She hated the flickering lights hanging from the ceiling pipes.
She hated knowing she had discovered something that not even her worst nightmares could have prepared her for.
But more than anything...
She hated the feeling that she was beginning to belong there, either as a victim—or perhaps as a guilty accomplice who never wanted to become one.
Across from her, the Prototype stood motionless within the shadows of the room, watching her with unbearable intensity. The yellow glow of his single eye seemed to pierce straight through her, as though he were slowly dismantling every thought inside her mind.
The metal limbs extending from behind him resembled the legs of a colossal spider patiently waiting for the perfect moment to wrap its prey in a web.
And yet...
Marceline was no longer certain she was truly the prey.
Her hands trembled.
Not from fear.
Not entirely.
It was exhaustion.
Desperation.
A constant pressure crushing her chest for months on end.
The executives had begun watching her.
Scientists stopped talking whenever she appeared.
The guards no longer bothered hiding their threats.
Employees had started disappearing just like the children.
Too many bodies.
Too many voices.
And every time Marceline closed her eyes, she heard screams coming from sectors that officially "didn't exist."
Slowly, she wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to keep her own body from falling apart.
"I can't take it anymore..." she finally whispered, her voice cracking in a humiliatingly vulnerable way. "I can't keep watching what they do down here. I can't keep watching them destroy people... destroy children... Every day it gets worse. Employees vanish without a trace, and now even the executives came down personally to warn me. They're watching me all the time. Following me. They want me to stay quiet... they want me to pretend nothing is happening..."
Her breathing faltered.
"I just want this to end... but I don't know what to do anymore."
The Prototype did not answer immediately.
And that silence was worse than any roar.
The glowing core inside his torso began to pulse beneath layers of metal and wires, illuminating fragments of the small room with intermittent flashes of orange light.
Then he moved.
Far too fast.
The enormous metal limbs screeched against the floor as he descended toward her with an unnatural, predatory grace. He did not ask for permission.
He never would.
His long arms wrapped around her immediately.
Marceline let out a shaky breath as the monster lifted her against his metallic chest as though she weighed nothing at all.
Carefully, he moved his long fingers.
Always careful not to apply too much pressure.
As if, even amid his unhealthy obsession, there remained a part of him terrified of hurting her.
"Shhh... don't cry..." a stolen feminine voice whispered near her ear, soft and maternal. "Your tears... should not exist in a place this filthy."
Then the voice changed.
It became deeper.
Darker.
Possessive.
"The executives came... to threaten you..." he growled slowly, and the metal beneath her vibrated with barely restrained fury. "The masters of this grave believe they still have the right to touch what belongs to me."
Marceline froze.
Because those words—
What belongs to me.
—did not sound metaphorical.
The Prototype slowly lowered his head until the cold porcelain of his mask pressed against her hair. The smell of plastic, dried blood, and burnt electricity filled her lungs.
And strangely...
She felt safe.
"They take everything..." he continued, dozens of overlapping voices speaking at once. "They take the children's light. They take names. They take bodies. They take souls. And now they want to take your peace as well... but they cannot. Not while I exist."
His arms tightened around her.
Desperate.
Hungry.
"You don't need to decide anything, Miss Marceline. You don't need to carry guilt. You don't need to dirty your hands. You only need to stay here... with me... while I destroy this place for you."
Slowly, Marceline looked up.
And that was when she realized the most terrifying truth of all.
The Prototype was not speaking impulsively.
He had already made his decision.
Everything else...
Was inevitable.
Her fingers trembled before she slowly raised a hand toward the cracked porcelain mask.
The entire monster froze.
The tips of her fingers barely brushed the cold, smooth surface.
And the Prototype shuddered violently.
A sharp sound escaped from his voice core—something broken and distorted that sounded dangerously close to an emotional gasp.
The orange glow of his eye flared with sickening intensity, casting monstrous shadows across the padded walls.
Desperately, he leaned into her touch.
Like a starving creature.
Like a condemned man receiving mercy for the first time in decades.
Marceline swallowed nervously, still frightened and uncertain as she slowly stroked the mask.
"Yes... we have a deal..." she finally whispered. "If you put an end to all of this... then I'll stay with you. I'll stay here and take care of you... for as long as necessary..."
The silence that followed was absolute.
And then...
The Prototype began to laugh.
Not loudly.
Not manically.
Worse.
A low, broken, emotional laugh that sounded like old machinery struggling to survive its own collapse.
His enormous hands immediately covered hers, keeping it pressed against his face.
He didn't want her to stop touching him.
Ever.
"A deal..." he repeated slowly, his voice childish and distorted. "A god does not lie, Miss Marceline. A god is absolute. And now... you belong to me just as much as I belong to you."
His heart, in his chest, was beating violently.
Warm.
Alive.
"If you stay with me... then I will burn the entire world for you. I will tear Playtime Co. apart piece by piece. I will rip out the throats of every scientist. I will empty these halls with their screams. I will turn this factory into a tomb so silent that even God will forget this place."
His voice lowered into an intimate whisper.
Terrifyingly gentle.
"And when it is all over... when there is no one left capable of looking at you, touching you, or taking you away from me... then we can finally exist in peace."
A chill ran through Marceline's entire body.
But she did not pull away.
Because some horrible, exhausted part of her...
Wanted to believe him.
The Prototype embraced her once more, completely hiding her within his metallic arms as he slowly rested his forehead against hers.
The small bells on his hat chimed softly in the darkness.
"Rest now..." he murmured in a strangely tender voice. "Sleep while there is still a world outside. When you wake... there will be no more threats. No more fear. No one else."
His glowing eye slowly shifted toward the massive reinforced door of the cell.
And Marceline realized something horrifying.
The Prototype had never truly been imprisoned.
He had only been waiting for a reason to leave.
