Work Text:

Poppy was always the odd one out.

Ever since they'd appeared on the grounds, they'd been avoided, yelled at, restrained, whispered about, and.. They didn't know how to wrap their head around it. Why did everyone seem to hate them so much? Or seem so scared of them? It wasn't like they'd tried biting anyone's head off.

They felt like in this society, they didn't belong. Nobody really understood them- or even tried to, they think. They never blended in, whether it was just in a regular crowd, or with their teammates, or with.. anyone, really. They felt like an outcast, like the spotlight was always on them, and they hated it.

Everyone else had their own people they trusted. Poppy had barely anyone. Except for Metag. Maybe Bot. But Metag was gone for a bit for that little 'stunt' they pulled, weren't they? And Bot was like everyone else- had someone else they trusted more.

In their team, they weren't ignored on purpose, per-say, but they were just.. there. It was like that pretty much with every group, really.

Why did everyone always seem to expect the worst from them? Why were they always seen as that corn man? They didn't even know everything he did. Why were they the one receiving weird looks? Why were they the one outcasted and disliked? Why were they the one treated like a predator ready to strike? Just the fact everyone's eyes was on them every time they entered a room made them want to cry and vomit out of nerves.

Sure, some people weren't too bad to them; many did talk to them, try to understand them and whatnot. But it was scary. Were they pitying them? Poppy wasn't a little kid. And it was scary- what if one day they switch up and start hating Poppy even more? Well, no one's outright told Poppy they hated them, but they didn't exactly like them either.

Metag had been one of Poppy's only friends, and now they were gone. Not gone-gone as in Poppy can't see them at all anymore, but still. It felt like one of their only true friends had disappeared by their side. Poppy wasn't quite sure what they'd wanted to show Poppy, but honestly, Metag just led Poppy to more questions instead of them receiving more answers. It was incredibly frustrating.

Poppy wasn't Cobs. They didn't know details on how he even died in the first place, much less what he did to everyone, and 'Mephone4'.. whoever that was. The thought of Poppy being somehow related to him in some way made them want to vomit. He was clearly a horrible person- someone Poppy definitely didn't want to be, nor be seen as. So why were they still being seen as them? They could almost swore they once overheard the OSC discussing the possibility they were his child. God, they hoped not.

...

It was too late for this. Tomorrow's another day- another try..that will definitely fail. Nonetheless, Poppy pulls the blanket over their head as their brain shut off.

Notes:

I will admit I don't particularly relate to Poppy in this despite it somewhat being a ventfic, since the majority of it is talking about their social life; i mostly meant for it to be about their relationship with their 'father' aka cobs. i honestly just woke up one morning and decided I was going to make one of my comfort characters suffer since it's free and therapy isn't
