Work Text:

Evo finished his last jump.

Supzec was gone.

Dead.

He had fallen into the void.

Just.

Like.

That.

He couldn’t believe what had happened.

He didn’t want to.

Death appeared before him, floating the way he usually did.

Evo’s grief turned into rage.

“Why did you kill him?! He did nothing wrong! He was innocent…”

Death just looked at him, the hearts on his neck glowing in an unsettling way.

Was he smiling?

Evo was about to lose it and that guy was smiling?!

Death landed a grin now clearly on his face.

“Innocent? Do you really believe someone you know could be innocent?”

Evo froze, before his mind started working twice as fast.

And then not at all.

He acted before thinking.

He immediately regretted it.

But the hit already echoed in the empty hall.

Death looked… surprised?

Like he didn’t think Evo would be stupid enough to do something like that.

Because usually he wasn’t.

But this wasn’t a usual occurrence.

“Evo-Evourai~”

Evo’s blood ran cold.

He regretted it, yes but now he wished he never did it.

Death’s singsong ended and Evourai felt an excruciating pain in his neck.

He fell on his knees, his scream echoing, just like the hit he landed.

He didn’t need to check.

He knew his hearts were on two.

Maybe if he didn’t look it wouldn’t be true.

The pain subsided slowly and Evo fell forward.

He caught himself with his hands before he could crash into the floor but he knew he wasn’t done yet.

“You know, Evourai, I was planning on letting you go after killing one of your friends. Well, looks like you didn’t get the clue.”

Evo looked at death, the man had something he could only describe as complete mania.

Suddenly, Evo felt the pull of teleportation pull on his body.

He stumbled forward, the teleportation putting him upright without a warning.

He hit a hard surface, when he looked it was a chest.

In front of him was an abyss and above that was a platform floating.

Death was next to the platform and snapped twice.

The first one teleported someone onto the platform, the second one set them to hardcore.

No.

Not again.

Why him… he didn’t… he was scared to say the name.

Hoping it wasn’t him as long as he didn’t acknowledge it.

“What- Evo?”

“Lezy- No. Stop. He didn’t do anything!”

Evo was completely panicking; he couldn’t lose another friend like this.

Death was laughing.

That madman was laughing.

This was just a game to him.

Evo wondered if the hit had hurt.

He hoped it did.

“Well, Evourai, this task is easy. Put all your items in the chest and step back.”

Evo knew he couldn’t believe the owner.

But he didn’t have a choice.

He took of his armor, placing it in the chest.

Next his potions, then his sword.

Lastly his elytra and his maces.

He felt unsafe, even though he knew armor wouldn’t help against death, it had given him a sense of security, of something normal.

Lezy was saying something but Evo didn’t hear him.

After putting in the last few items he stepped back like Death had told him to.

The owner smirked and pulled out a fishing rod.

Before Evo could realize, the explosion hit just in front of him, missing him by a few centimeters.

The explosion’s recoil sent him flying and he almost fell of the edge.

The air was pressed out of his lungs and he held onto that edge for his life.

Death just watched.

So did Lezy.

Evo believed his friend had shouted his name, saying something.

He wasn’t sure anymore.

His ears rang and his entire body ached.

Evo started pulling himself up, knowing if he didn’t do it now, he wouldn’t be able to do it at all.

He was struggling but managed to get over the edge after some time.

He lied on the floor, trying to recover.

His breathing was short.

He felt horrible.

All his stuff just gone.

He cared less about himself than about his stuff.

He had gone through hell just to get those maces.

He didn’t even want to think about his elytra.

Lezy was screaming something, probably to Death.

Evo still couldn’t hear any specifics.

He didn’t want to look.

But he had to.

His hearing was starting to return.

He hoped it wouldn’t leave any permanent damage.

Who was he kidding, he hoped the damage wasn’t too bad.

Lezy was still screaming at Death but the other just ignored him, his focus on Evo.

It was the focus you had when watching an experiment or perhaps a drama.

He hated this.

This was just entertainment to Death.

To Evo it was his life being destroyed.

“I did what you asked, let Lezy go.”

Evo hoped Death would keep his word.

He was wrong.

So, so wrong.

“Well… No, I don’t think so.”

“He is uninvolved! You can’t just do whatever you want!”

“Oh, but that’s precisely what I can do!”

Death’s voice sounded so gleeful Evo wanted to throw up.

Lezy seemed to have understood what was about to happen.

He looked at Death with contempt but at Evo he looked with… reconciliation?

Like he had accepted it.

Evo didn’t want that.

He wanted Lezy to be happy after everything that had happened because of him.

Then Death snapped his fingers and Lezy appeared in front of Evo, where the chest had stood.

His mind made predictions, all of them not very desirable.

He heard a fishing rod break and lounged forward.

“Lezy!”

The explosion hit before he could reach the impact radius.

The recoil was even stronger this time.

He was pretty sure his lung was punctured.

He didn’t care.

He just stared at the Crater where his friend was just standing.

 Again.

And again.

He looked away and looked back.

Again.

And again.

Like something would change.

He was quiet.

The pain in his body felt numb.

Like he wasn’t there.

Like he was still in the moment before this one.

Tick... Tick… he was still processing the moment.

Death just watched.

He probably enjoyed this.

Death didn’t smile.

He looked… annoyed?

Why.

This was death’s fault.

Death regained his usual demeanor quickly, smiling again.

Evo just wanted to leave.

To quit.

He couldn’t.

Why couldn’t he leave?

His vision started to blur, colors contradicting each other.

He felt blood drain from his hands and legs and he felt cold.

Everything went black.
