Work Text:
He sat at the far end of the counter with both hands around a glass he had forgotten to drink from.
Rain pressed softly against the windows.
After a while he said:
"Do you remember the steppe?"
Liam kept drying the same glass.
"Mm.. been there a few times."
Silence stretched.
He stared somewhere far beyond the bottles.
"The grass went forever."
"Not forever."
"Felt like forever."
Liam nodded once.
He smiled slightly then. Old smile. Human smile.
"Cold mornings."
"Mm."
"Horses."
"Too many horses, lad."
A wet laugh escaped him.
For a while the only sound was the rain and the low hum of the old fridge behind the bar.
Then he spoke again.
"You there when we burned the Jin camps?"
Liam shook his head.
"No. Wasn't born then to be honest, and anyhow, sure we were in the west at the time."
He nodded slowly.
Neither man said anything after that.
Eventually, Liam refreshed the glass.
He drank this one.
