Work Text:

The lens of the standard-definition camcorder reflects two teenagers sitting cross-legged on a plush hotel bed, the heavy floral curtains of a Dallas Hilton blocking out the gray February chill. The world is small enough to fit inside a YouTube upload box. Selena repositions herself, her dark bangs sweeping across her forehead as she leans over a piece of loose-leaf paper covered in scribbled notes. Next to her, Demi is a vibrant burst of energy, adjusting the collar of her layered t-shirts and flashing a bright, toothy smile at the glowing red recording light. They are fifteen, fueled by room service fries and the dizzying momentum of their exploding careers, but right here, they are just each other’s center of gravity.

"Okay, so we have literally so many questions from you guys," Selena says, her voice carrying that familiar, husky warmth as she looks into the camera. She glances sideways at Demi, her shoulder brushing against Demi’s seamlessly. "Like, our inbox is completely flooded. You guys are insane, thank you so much."

Demi nods enthusiastically, her dark hair bouncing. "Seriously, it's crazy. We're trying to get through as many as we can before we have to leave for soundcheck." She leans into Selena’s space, pointing at the top of the list. "Oh, do that one first. The one about Wizards."

"Right, okay!" Selena smiles, her eyes lighting up as she reads the username. "This one is from wizardfan92, and they want to know what it's like working with Jake T. Austin." She looks directly into the lens, her expression softening into pure affection. "Honestly? He is like my actual little brother. He is so annoying sometimes, just like a real brother, but I love him to death. He makes everyone on set laugh constantly, and he's just the sweetest kid. We're always messing around between takes."

"He really is like a little brother to both of us," Demi chimes in, tossing her head back with a laugh. "Every time I visit the set, he's either trying to play a prank or just being a total goofball. It's impossible to be in a bad mood around him."

Selena taps the paper, moving her finger down to a cluster of brightly highlighted questions. "Okay, a lot of people are asking basic stuff too, just to get to know us better. Like favorite colors. Demi, go."

"Black and red," Demi says instantly, popping the 'p' sound with playful confidence. She gestures down to her outfit, which leans heavily into the late-2000s pop-punk aesthetic. "Always. It just matches my soul, you know? Very dramatic."

Selena rolls her eyes lovingly, pushing Demi’s shoulder with a soft laugh. "You are so dramatic. For me, it's definitely green. Any shade of green, really. It's just calming." She shifts her weight on the mattress, the fabric of her jeans rustling against the sheets. Eight years of history lie between them, stretching all the way back to the bright yellow set of Barney & Friends, when they were just seven-year-olds holding hands in matching overalls. Now, sixteen months into a secret relationship, those roots feel deeper than ever. The rhythm of the video changes as Selena’s eyes scan down to the next paragraph of handwritten text. She hesitates for a fraction of a second, her fingers tightening slightly against the edge of the paper.

"Okay, this next one is from Alicia," Selena says. She clears her throat, a sudden, soft pink flush creeping up her neck and settling into her cheeks. Her voice drops just a fraction, losing a bit of its polished performer edge and becoming entirely raw. "Alicia wants to know... 'Do you have a purity ring?'"

The question hangs in the humid air of the hotel room. Selena bites her lower lip, a nervous habit she’s never quite cured, and lifts her left hand toward the camera lens. She tilts her wrist, ensuring the light catches the metallic gleam. Resting squarely on her ring finger—the traditional spot where a wedding band might sit years down the line—is a simple, unadorned band of polished sterling silver.

It looks like the standard promise rings are popular among their Disney peers, but the weight of it is entirely different. It carries the secret history of an October evening four months ago, marking their one-year anniversary in a quiet corner of a Los Angeles park. They had traded jewelry under a twilight sky, making a vow the rest of the world wouldn't understand, translating their hidden devotion into a language the public would accept.

"Another person asked right under her question," Selena continues, her eyes flicking down to avoid the camera for a brief moment as she fights back a shy, self-conscious smile. "'If so, what does it say?'" She clears her throat again, her voice steadying as she looks back up. "It says that true love waits."

Demi watches Selena, her expression fierce with an emotion that defies their young age. There is no hesitation in Demi's movements as she reaches up to her neckline. Her fingers slide under the collar of her shirt, pulling out a delicate silver chain. Dangling from it is a small, rectangular silver pendant, catching the artificial glare of the hotel lamps.

"Yes," Demi says, her voice ringing out clear and proud, grounding them both in the shared space. "And I have a necklace that says the exact same thing. True love waits." She lets the metal plate rest against her collarbone, a physical anchor. To the millions of fans who will eventually watch the clip, it is a testament to faith and teenage innocence. To them, it is a shield.

The moment the words leave Demi's mouth, Selena reaches forward. Her hand sweeps out, her fingers catching the side of the camcorder and twisting the lens away from them, tilting it toward the ceiling. The screen fills with the blurry beige texture of the hotel acoustic tiles.

"Wait, let me just stop the rolling for a second," Selena murmurs, her voice dropping to a hurried whisper.

The manicured energy of the video blog evaporates, leaving behind the quiet reality of two fifteen-year-old girls navigating a world that demands total transparency even as it forces them to hide. They still have a dozen questions left to answer on the paper, but the weight of the silver ring suddenly feels immense on Selena's finger. She turns completely toward Demi, tucking her knees up against her chest. Her dark eyes are wide, swirling with a sudden, sharp spike of anxiety.

"Is that... do you think that's too much?" she asks shyly, her voice small. She glances at the recording light, even though it's pointed at the ceiling. "Like, showing both at the same time? Talking about what's written on them?"

They have been in the entertainment industry long enough to understand its rigid, unwritten rules. They know how the media operates. They watch the tabloids dissect the lives of young starlets every single day, and they know, with a bruising certainty, that a same-sex relationship wouldn't just be scrutinized—it would be treated like a punchline, a joke, or a career-ending scandal. The fear is a constant, low-frequency hum in the background of everything they do. Demi shifts closer instantly, closing the small physical distance between them on the bed. She reaches out, wrapping her fingers around Selena’s trembling hand, her thumb tracing over the silver band on Selena's finger.

"Hey. Look at me," Demi says gently, her voice fiercely protective. "It's not too much. I promise."

"But what if people guess?" Selena whispers, her shoulders tense. "What if they put it together? The anniversary, the matching words... it feels like we're leaving breadcrumbs."

"Sel, think about it," Demi reasons, offering a comforting, realistic smile. She squeezes Selena's hand, her tone steady and reassuring. "We're best friends. We've been best friends since we were seven years old. The whole world knows we're inseparable. When people see this, they aren't going to think anything crazy. They're just going to assume we're best friends who got matching best friend jewelry. People see what they expect to see."

Selena lets out a long, slow breath, the tension gradually draining from her shoulders as Demi's logic sinks in. "You really think so?"

"I know so," Demi says softly.

Wanting to completely dissolve the remaining traces of panic, Demi leans forward. She doesn't close the distance for a kiss—the risk of the camera catching a shadow is too high—but instead, she brings her face right up to Selena's. Slowly, deliberately, Demi presses her forehead against Selena’s. The contact is instant and grounding. Selena closes her eyes, breathing in the familiar scent of Demi's hairspray and vanilla perfume. It is their favorite unspoken technique, a way to shut out the noise of the industry, the pressure of the network, and the watching eyes of the world. With their foreheads pressed together, the hotel room disappears. The impending tour, the soundchecks, and the internet slip away.

They stay like that for a long, quiet minute, their breathing syncing up in the quiet room. The silver ring presses against Demi's palm, a small, hidden truth between them.

"We're okay," Demi whispers against Selena's skin, her voice a warm promise. "We're totally fine."

Selena nods against her, a small smile finally tugging at the corners of her lips. The anxiety recedes, replaced by the familiar courage that always comes when they face things together. She opens her eyes, looking directly into Demi's dark eyes just inches away.

"Okay," Selena says, her voice returning to its normal volume, steady and ready. "Let's finish the video."

She reaches out, grabbing the camcorder, and twists the lens back down until it frames their faces once again, ready to give the world exactly what it expected to see, while keeping what mattered entirely for themselves.
