Chapter 1: Observation Notes

Chapter Text

Maomao didn’t understand Xiaolan’s interest in Seiran universities athletic events. She understood even less the reason why Xiaolan had to drag her to the fencing match as well. To Maomao attending this event was wasting the time she could have spent studying. Or sleeping before she had to cover a shift at Seiran’s medical center. Or anything other than watching grown men hit each other with swords. Maomao truly regrets allowing Xiaolan the privilege of dragging the green haired girl to student events in hopes to give her the ‘college kid experience’ (Or whatever that meant).

The Athletic center’s bleachers smell of cheap perfume, grease, and sweat. Maomao assumes most of those odors come from the elitist girls sitting next to them. For a sport that's not typically popular, the student seating is unusually full. Maomao wonders why, until she remembers that she still doesn’t want to be here, especially now that she has no personal space. She can feel Xiaolan’s arms right against hers, and if both girls weren’t borderline skin and bones Maomao is sure she’d feel more than just the other girls her arms.

Due to her groveling, Maomao misses the announcements of what fellow students (athletes) were participating in the meet, however she does tune back in when every girl around her starts squealing. At that moment, she regrets accepting the prestigious university's full ride scholarship. What did she do in her past life to deserve this form of torture?

“Maomao!!! Are you paying attention? The blade prince is about to go up!!”

The girl feels a tug on her arms, forcing her out of the peaceful imagination Maomao created where she wasn’t HERE.

“The blade prince? What a gaudy name….” Maomao looks towards the center of the Arena where two men clad in armor face each other. One dressed in gold and black, Seiran’s school colors, Maomao notes, and another in plain white. Each time the man dressed in gold hits the other person, the girls around her sequel like pigs. “Does every girl here have a massive boner for this guy?” she grumbles.

Instead of focusing on the match( or any former matches for that matter), Maomao catalogs each hit as whether it would cause a bruise or not. Then catalog what herbal remedies or pain meds she would prescribe. Before she knew it, the meet was nearing its end.

She could guess that ‘The blade prince’ was in the finale with how many horny women were yelling around her. This match seemed far more violent than others, Maomao noted how ‘The blade prince’ was getting hit more than before. Was he tired or shittier than everyone thought? Each stab that landed seems more violent than the last.

It would be terrible for Maomao’s sanity if any of these athletes showed up at the medical center tonight.

“Wow I really jinxed myself, didn't I….” Maomao grumbles as she watches a purple haired man walk through the medical center's doors. Maomao analyzed the man. The man's long hair was pulled into a ponytail, he had long eyelashes and an uncharacteristically feminine face for a man. Even if the man wasn’t dressed in a shirt saying BLADE PRINCE in gold bold lettering, Maomao is sure she’d have connected the dots.

“Good evening princess, is there anyone available to treat me for some battle injuries?” The man with an annoyingly smooth voice winks at Maomao before resting his arms on the counter and smiling brightly.

Maomao can feel her right eye twitch and bile rise in her throat as the man continues to look at her. When she agreed to cover this shift she wasn’t expecting to deal with this bullshit. Maomao’s hands begin to rapidly type on the computer in front of her before sighing and responding to the man.

“I can check…” she grovels “ What’s your name, I just need to pull up your profile..”

“You… You don’t know who I am?” The man’s jaw hangs wide open, Maomao can imagine the bombs going off in the man’s head at the knowledge someone doesn’t know him. The idea makes the med-student want to laugh.

“Would I have asked for it if I had known? Or would…” Maomao stares down at the man’s Gaudy shirt, making sure her face showed how disgusted she was by the man’s choice of fashion “Blade prince work?” The girl blinks her eyes and makes a phony pouty face.

Before ‘The blade prince’ could respond, the head nurse (and Maomao’s preceptor) walked into the room. The elderly lady smiled at the sight of the gaudy man. Are even the elderly horny for him?!

“ Sir Jinshi, what brings you in tonight?” The woman walks to the front desk and pulls out one of the very few physical folders of profiles the institute carries. The man, Jinshi she assumes, straightens his posture as the elderly woman talks.

“Just some pains and aches caused by tonight's fencing meet. The Athletic trainers and medical staff left before I could find them, anyway can someone wrap me up before I get my victory dinner?” Jinshi claps his hands together.

“Of course, we have to keep our fencing champion healthy right?” The head nurse laughs before turning towards Maomao and offering her the file. “Jinshi’s injuries are typically rather minimalistic, If it’s alright with you both our dearest Maomao can use some practice”

Maomao bites her tongue. She knows her preceptor means no harm, but Maomao has been treating basic injuries for almost a decade. She’s well far past needing practice in such a simple skill. Instead of airing her grievances Maomao stands up and gestures to Jinshi to follow her towards the closest non occupied room.

“Let's get this over with….”
