Powerless Protagonist (WIP Title)

Summary:

A protagonist doesn't need to have anything special to be the main character.

When Jane's younger sister Marget is discovered to be part of an ancient cult, everyone expects Jane to also develop magic or discover some ancient artefact. But here's the thing - Jane is perfectly ordinary. Marget is adopted - Jane remembered it as if it was yesterday. The only thing special about Jane is how good her memory was - for only some things. She could tell you the pattern of cracks in the ceiling but not what she ate for breakfast. She could remeber the key to many codes but not the word she had decoded. But when Marget is pulled into a whirlwind of a life, only Jane can ground her.

Notes:

Italics are a flashback sequence.

Chapter 1: Undetermined

Summary:

Jane is ordinary. Perfectly ordinary. So ordinary that no one would suspect that she has powers. So ordinary she doesn't even have powers! Unless you count her memory as a power, but she doesn't.

Chapter Text

'Peggy! Peggy!!!' Called Mum.

My name is Jane Evans, and I have a secret.

My sister, Marget, is adopted, but we look so alike no one else knows except for Mum, Dad and me. I'm not even supposed to know, but my memory is so good that I remember that day, even though it was when I was 5.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A knock at the door. Mum and Dad looked grim, and Mum was trying to hide her tears. She had never been very good at it. I knew something sad had happened. Dad turned, and saw me.
"Hey sweetie." He whispered. "Mum just got some bad news about Aunt Catherine. She won't be coming back from her road trip. We'll be looking after cousin Peggy now. She'll be your little sister, yes?"
Dad was born to British parents, but in France, so he had adopted their mannerisms. Sometimes he slipped into them, but only when he was extremely upset. I knew something bad had happened to Aunt Cathy. But what had? And why did the way Dad suggested that we would be looking after Peggy feel like it meant Aunt Cathy wouldn't becoming back for her?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I drifted back to the present. Peggy had gotten up and was dressing for elementary school. As an Undetermined, she wore all white clothing, ready to be dyed the day she got her test results back. She had taken them last Friday. I looked at my drab uniform and sighed. I had been labeled as Powerless a week after my tests, and my uniform was nearly as plain as hers. Dark, dull blue skirt and jumper, and matching black socks. A pale grey blouse tied it all together. It was elegant, but the color scheme gave off serious 'emo vibes' as my friends would say.
