Work Text:

Dark couldn’t sleep. He couldn’t. Not like this anyways. There was too much to think about, and by what time of night he assumed it was, he probably wouldn’t be getting any sleep at all tonight.

Chosen was asleep across their makeshift room (outside of said “room” was some site they had razed, which they were currently taking a break in), and for once he didn’t look like he was having a panic attack in his sleep. Funny, how the one night Dark wanted to rest, he couldn’t.

He also wanted to go home. Back to his and Chosen's little house in the Outernet, with his lab room and their bedroom with those string lights Dark had found and his computer and all of his little electronics and code projects. But nooo,  Chosen had insisted they take a break on some random half charred site where someone could be anywhere, waiting to get back at them for destroying their home.

Did Dark feel any remorse, any sympathy, for those people? Nope. Not in the slightest. For fucks sake he was a cannibal. Cannibals don't feel bad for the people they eat. Chosen on the other hand…

The first time Chosen found out just how little of a moral compass Dark had, he.. had not reacted well. There was a brief argument, mainly about how it was ‘unsanitary’ or how it ‘could get him sick’. Like either of them could get sick. As far as Dark knew, they couldn’t die at all, let alone get some disease from eating people.

Dark couldn’t tell what Chosen was ever thinking at this point. Whenever Dark killed someone, Chosen got this look, and Dark had absolutely no damn clue what that look meant. It wasn’t regret, he didn’t think it was at least. He just went all.. blank. Sorta like how he looked when he zoned out. But he was still fully aware of his surroundings, still responded when Dark spoke, still turned to look when something exploded behind him. Only when they went home did the blank face thing drop.

A little while after Chosen and Dark escaped off Alan’s PC, they burned down some city, and they had found a store with a bunch of electronics in it. Of course Dark wanted to look, so they did, and they took some stuff home with them, which included a decently sized TV. They didn’t have cable or WiFi, a problem Dark had fixed in a very ‘legal’ way. But after that, whenever they had time alone together, they had a movie night. They switched off on who got to pick the movie, but most of the time the movie was just background noise, and they just talked to each other, until the credits started rolling and they realized they hadn’t paid any attention to the plot, so then they rewinded the movie and mostly paid attention.

But after that time when they found that TV, they had this thing where every time they went and burned down some town or city, after they were done with it, they went around and picked through the remains. A lot of the time they found some really cool stuff, like one time Chosen found a bunch of CDs that they still listen to (Chosen being Chosen, he took all the music he tried to claim wasn’t emo, which clearly was).

But recently, Chosen hadn’t really seemed to be enjoying their little outings as much, just let Dark do most of the actual destruction and then picked through the ruins with him. And Dark didn’t know why. He wanted to know, but he couldn’t tell if probing would piss off Chosen or not, so he left it alone. For now at least. He had been working on something that would hopefully get Chosen as excited as he was before.

Dark rolled over onto his side so he could see Chosen again. He was clearly asleep, since he was doing that little quiet snoring thing, and Dark didn’t really want to wake him right now since he almost never slept as well as this, but cursors he could use someone to talk to right about now.

Dark knew damn well what he was made to do. He was made to kill this guy. He was just.. delaying it. Yeah that's it. He would eventually, just not now. He couldn’t now. Not yet. Maybe he never would. He knew the longer he waited, the worse it would get for him, but it was worth it, right? Worth the migraines, worth his stability, his health, for those fleeting moments of happiness, how when Chosen smiled at him, it wasn’t just approval or that wild grin he used to get, it was genuine, and the way it made Dark feel was divine.

Dark rolled again to face the sky (whatever counts as the sky on a site) instead of that stupidly fluffy hair that makes his heart skip a beat. It was.. somewhat pretty, it was this midnight blue that he knew was gonna start changing to orange soon, since it changed depending on time to make it seem more real, but there weren’t any stars, unlike the ACTUAL SKY at their house. With ACTUAL STARS to look at. Did he mention that he wanted to go home?

Eventually, after what felt like forever, Dark did manage to fall asleep, for what felt like forty minutes, if that. Then Chosen was shaking him awake so they could leave.

“Dark. Dark c’mon I know you’re awake already, let's go home.”

Dark groaned, he did NOT want to be awake at this hour. It was around seven in the morning, based on the “sky’s” color, which was an orange fading to blue, and he was barely ever up before nine. But he knew how Chosen was, so he sat up, slowly though.

“Good. Come on, if you wanna be home before noon we should leave now so we don’t have to avoid people.” Chosen hadn’t left much room for argument in that statement.

Dark knew Chosen didn’t like being seen in public, because ‘ooo the police could stop them’ Yada yada no they fucking can’t. But he did care for his opinion, so he left with him.

Dark knew without saying that they were gonna fly home, one, since there really wasn’t any other way to get up to where they needed to be, and two, since Chosen was way too reliant on his powers, which he used for almost everything. Making toast, charging his phone, even putting ice in a damn drink. Dark was less reliant on his since his were more destruction based, more destructive in general really, just fire and giant energy ball things. Chosen had almost anything you could think of. He wasn’t jealous. He was NOT jealous.

Dark let heat build in his palms until it sparked, at which point he took off after Chosen. When they got to the spot they came in, Chosen did his little portal thingy (Which Dark STILL didn’t know how it works), and they went back to the outernet.

They couldn’t portal directly into their house, but they could get pretty close, which is the main reason Cho wanted to leave this early, so people didn’t see them, since no normal person was out at barely 7 AM on a Saturday morning. Then again, they were both about as far from normal as you could get.

It was MUCH prettier out there by the way. Almost all sites had dead air, doesn’t move unless something makes it move, which makes it really easy to get way too hot in there. The Outernet was as close to a world that wasn't digital as they would ever get, the sky was actually realistic out there, and there was weather, which was sometimes shitty, but most of the time it was pleasant, and there were seasons. Dark loved seasons for some reason, it was satisfying to see the leaves turn orange, fall away, flower, then grow back. Chosen didn’t, since his powers changed with the season (You could probably guess which was which, spring was more balanced, summer was fire, fall was weather, and winter was ice)

The flight back to their actual house wasn’t too bad. As aforementioned, almost no one was outside at this time of day, especially on a weekend, other than a few people who were out at this ungodly hour for some reason, they didn’t really see anyone. Their house was sorta like two rectangles merged weirdly, the bottom one was the one with the living room and the bedrooms and all that stuff, but a little while after they moved in Dark had gotten into coding, and after a couple weeks of his stuff strewn around the house Chosen got tired of the mess so they decided to add another section to the house, which was pretty much a lab thing for Dark to build in. Chosen only really ever goes in there if he needs Dark for something or to make him sleep in an actual bed, not passed out over a table.

Once they did actually get home, Chosen almost instantly collapsed on the couch like he’d been sh0t. Dark leaned across the back of the couch to look at him.

“Yknow, for someone who claims he slept last night, you do not look very rested.”

Chosen glared up at him from his position on the couch, but refused to get up. “Just ‘cause I slept decent for one night doesn’t instantly get rid of weeks of no sleep.” He half-mumbled up at him.

Dark grinned, then vaulted over the back of the couch to sit beside Chosen's sprawled out form on the couch. “You look like a wet cat,” He teased, poking his cheek “And a bit hungry, did you even eat anything?” Stroking his chin, pretending as if he's deep in thought and this was a case to debate.

“Screw you” Chosen grumbled, sounding annoyed already, turning his head away from Dark.

He gasps cinematically, before falling back onto the couch next to his dear Chosen, “How could you say that!? I was pouring my heart out to you!” He says comically, sneaking a glance at Chosen to see if he was watching, looking dumbfounded as he was, in fact watching him.

Now you care if I’m hungry? Thanks a lot” Chosen drgs the blanket draped over the back of the couch to  try to get some rest. Dark gazes at him as he does so, watching him as if he’s an entertaining television program, couch then he gets off the couch and stands up proudly. “You know what? I'm going to make you dinner!” He claims, pointing at Chosen, who was laying on the couch, raising an eyebrow as he watches this monologue, completely unamused, though curious.

Dark skipped off to the kitchen, leaving Chosen in the bed looking quiteuite aloof at what he just saw. I mean, what on Alan’s computer is he gonna cook? He falls back onto the singular throw pillow, resting his eyes and sighing.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen. Dark was trying to remember recipes from the top of his head, he remembered seeing some in the city (Preferrably ones that weren't burnt up-) Omelette? No..thats breakfast. He rummaged through some of the light grey drawers, finding stolen utensils and one small plate, It’ll do! Dark thought, leaving it on the counter. And then…it hit him, they barely had any ingredients. Well, Dark didn’t need to eat much. There were better things to eat anyway. Why was he even making him dinner? It's not like he.. wanted to impress him or anything, Nope, definitely not.

“Cup noodle?” His fingers wrapped around the cup, staring at the yellow text before shrugging it off and grabbing a pot, sprinting to the sea quickly to fill it up with water, before dumping the noodles into the pot and… starting a flame in his hands in order to heat it up and make the water boil. Their stove was… Dysfunctional for the time being, courtesy of Darks code. He just hoped Chosen would like it, scratch that of course he’d like it! Dark made it for him after all! The noodles looked right about done, stopping the fire rising and curling his hands into fists so the claws would fade away.

“Oh Chosen!” Dark said, clearly excited, hurrying off to where Chosen was resting on the couch like a puppy, peeking at his face as Chosen turned his head slowly, rubbing his eyes as he murmured “Huh?” Before his gaze darted to the pot in Dark’s hands and realizing it was the dinner he claimed to make.

“Is that-” Chosen started, before realising the look on Dark’s face, it made his face flush. “You want me to eat it with my bare hands?”

Dark shook his head before holding up a fork, handing it over to him. “Didn’t want to get your hands dirty, hm?” He says as he leans his head on the armrest, watching him once again.

Chosen inspected what was inside the pot before consuming, the noodles were too wet, and he predicted this was a curry flavor, so it wouldn’t be too bad, he hoped, he would probably eat it nonetheless, not that he would ever admit it.

Dark was watching him with his hands resting at his face, grinning.

He eventually started eating, slurping the flavors as the last of the noodles were tasted by him. Dark actually didn’t do too bad, but the look he was giving Chosen made him want to say otherwise. “So, how’d you like my banquet?” He says, fluttering his eyes at Chosen, trying to get a reaction out of him.

“Not bad” Was all Chosen had to say, Dark threw his fists up into the air as if he won the lottery.

“The Chosen One liked the feast I made him! I win in life!”

Chosen set the pot down, not fighting the grin at the end of his lips, his stare lingering at Dark, before yawning and sinking back into the blanket as Dark’s chatter died down, out of pity, probably.

“Okay littlest Chosen, good night and I hope you dream of me in all my glory.” Dark teased once again, stretching his arms until they cracked. He watched Chosen once again, almost like it was a part of his routine.

He looked out of the window as he saw the gradient in the sky. It was dark, almost red, fading into orange, reminding him of one of the many cities that have been burnt down by him…

“Dark..”

He turned his face instead of jumping from startlement, ‘Was Chosen talking in his sleep again? I thought he only did that when he was sick . . .?’

“Chosen?” He answered back.

He was still fast asleep on the couch, the blanket sprawled out a bit, Dark couldn’t help but pull the covers back up on him.

‘Maybe he was just dreaming..’ He thought

‘Of me.’

His mind blanked out for a minute, accidentally glancing back at Chosen who was breathing softly in the covers, he looked so peaceful.

Feeling like he was staring at him too much, he walked out the house and sat on the edge of the cliff.

He sighed as a breath he didn’t know he was holding released.

‘I shouldn’t be thinking so much about him, it's probably useless.’

Probably…

But did Dark ever quit?

Maybe this time.

His fingers pause, then settle on the grass on the cliff. Remembering how Chosen would sit next to him so casually.

He wanted that to last forever..

No, they were just equals. Nothing more, nothing less. He should definitely not be  thinking constantly about him too much. and not how he’d feel holding him in his arms until they both drifted to sleep or having Chosen ruffle his hair or kissing him on the-

Why would he care anyways?

Some bird screeched, loud, overhead.

“Gh-!” The sound of the eagle flying above startled Dark, he wasn’t even the type to get startled and in most cases he would curse but…

“If you wanna be taken seriously, don't swear like a sailor.” Chosen’s voice echoed in his mind.

…Whatever, it had nothing to do with him. Nothing at all…

He heard another eagle sound coming from his left ear, when he looked back it was the same eagle but with another of it’s kind. Were they mating or some-

Dark squinted his eyes at that in annoyance, some kind of mockery..-

Reluctantly, he got up and walked back into the ‘house’.

He stretched his back before hearing Chosen sneeze from the other room.

Dark immediately got up and sprinted walked quickly to him.
