Work Text:
Beep!
A text pops up as Pico is scrolling his phone.
The sound instantly tells him it’s from Boyfriend.
Not his boyfriend though.
He clicks on it.
Do you wanna go out for lunch?
He grunts.
Sure
Yayayayayayayay :D
He smiles.
He’s so cute.
Meet me at the Burger place in 30 minutes :3
Cool
Boyfriend was never good at planning things ahead of time; Pico doesn’t care though, it’s not like he has anything better to do with it.
30 minutes later he’s in his hoody walking down the street. The busy noises of the city occupy his mind as he walks up to the store.
Here he texts as he opens the door.
The little bell rings and he looks around. Boyfriend is standing next to the self order machines waiting. Pico can see as Boyfriend feels a text, grabs his phone, sees the text, looks up, and sees him.
Pico smiles as he puts his phone into his pocket and goes in. Boyfriend waves him over happily.
“Hi!” He exclaims as he walks over.
“Hey.” They give each other a fistbump.
“Don’t have your gun I see.” Boyfriend smirks as he looks up at Pico.
He always forgets how small Boyfriend is.
“How would you know? I am a master of undetection.”
He giggles.
“Where’s Girlfriend?” Pico looks around, realising she isn’t with them. “Is she late?”
“No, she couldn’t make it. Had some ‘family business’ she has to attend.”
“I see.”
“So it’s just us.”
Just us.
Just them.
Just Pico and Boyfriend.
Just like it used to be.
“Whaddya wanna order?” Boyfriend asks him as he turns to the kiosk.
“Just the usual.”
“Mhm!”
“Oh, uh-” He fumbles while Boyfriend gets everything, “I can pay.”
Don’t be nervous.
“Okay!”
Pico watches as Boyfriend scrolls through his order and checks out.
“You forgot to get a medium fry for me.”
He stops. “Whoops.”
“Boyfriend, how could you?” Pico teases.
“Sorry sorry.” He apologises as he struggles to find the way to go back.
“It’s fine.” Pico pulls out his credit card. “I’ll just steal some of yours.”
“Sure!” He laughs and shrugs. “Seems fair enough.”
Pico was being sarcastic.
He blushes a little while he swipes his card.
They walk closer to the counter to wait for their order.
After a few moments Boyfriend starts a conversation. “I noticed you were wearing your pin.” He says innocently.
Pico rolls his eyes and turns away to hide his blush. He wasn’t very good at it. “Of course.”
He had forgotten he was wearing it, the pink, purple, and blue Bi pin on his jacket. He did always wear it while he hung out with Boyfriend, though at this point he just leaves it pinned onto his jacket since he always wears it while they hang out anyway.
Now that they’re alone he realises it might look a bit different than just showing off his pride.
“I always do, you should know this.” He turns back to look at Boyfriend now that his blush has died down.
Boyfriend gives him a mischievous look. “Right.”
“Oh don’t give me that you little b*tch.”
He laughs evilly, making Pico laugh a little too.
“You can go sit down.” Pico tells him. “I’ll get our food.”
“Alright!” BF gives him a peace sign and walks to his favorite place to sit.
Pico sighs at himself. Why is he like this?
He has a girlfriend.
Pico couldn’t go back even if he wanted to.
He wants to.
So badly.
He grabs their order once it’s ready and heads over to the window seat opposite to Boyfriend.
“Food!”
When Pico sets the bag down Boyfriend digs into it, finding his lunch.
“Geez.” Pico laughs.
After BF is done Pico reaches into the bag to find his stuff.
He unwraps his first burger and takes a bite.
“Mmmmmmmm.”
Boyfriend laughs at his reaction. “Every time.” He says as he takes a bite of his own.
“What is that supposed to mean?!” Pico tries to ask through a mouthful.
“You always look so happy when you eat your burger.” Boyfriend responds. “Is a double patty burger with extra pickles really that good?”
“I don’t come here often, s’all.” He responds simply before taking another bite.
Boyfriend gives him a look.
Pico chooses to ignore it. “What’ve you been up to?” He asks instead.
“Oh, same old trying to not get my soul stolen shenanigans.”
Pico gestures for him to elaborate.
“This week was really interesting. Me and Girlfriend were just going for a stroll when we saw this guy- an- and he was really weird looking.”
As Boyfriend begins his long winded explanation, Pico drinks his Dr. Pepper and looks at him.
Boyfriend’s voice slowly begins to fade away as Pico takes him in.
His big grin and round face makes him look so cute. Brown eyes make him look so determined and optimistic no matter what. His signature oversized backwards cap makes him look so striking, and his natural bright blue hair gives him some flare.
He looks like he’s ready to take on the world.
He looks so lovely.
Pico would do anything for him.
Anything to have him.
…
…But he already has someone else.
Boyfriend is not his.
Not anymore.
They’re just friends.
That’s all.
He needs to accept that.
This should be good enough for him.
They can’t be anything other than that.
Not anymore.
“Pico!”
He flinches.
Boyfriend is looking at him with concern.
“Are you okay?”
“Of course.” Boyfriend doesn’t need to know. “Why wouldn’t I be.”
He turns his head. “Pico…”
“It’s nothing, really.”
Now he looks slightly annoyed. “Tell me.”
He shouldn’t.
He can’t.
“I- it’s fine, I don’t need-”
“PICO!” Boyfriend yells.
He stops.
Boyfriend never yells.
He looks at him dead serious.
“Tell. Me.”
He collapses onto the table with a grumble of defeat and worry.
Boyfriend waits.
Pico sits back up and lets it out.
“I… I still love you, Boyfriend.”
Boyfriend looks surprised.
He continues. “It never went away. I tried so hard to get rid of it, because I knew we were never going to happen again, but it didn’t work.
“You’re with Girlfriend now. You two are good for each other, I don’t want to try and force you to do anything for me. I was never good for you, and probably never will be.
“I didn’t want to tell you because we’re finally friends again and I’m happy that we are and if I told you then you wouldn’t want to be friends again and I just couldn’t deal with that and-”
He stops himself.
“You’re awesome, Boyfriend.” He looks up at him. “Please, I don’t want you to leave me again.”
Boyfriend is stunned.
A moment passes in silence.
“F**k.” Pico says after a moment, burying his head in his arms. “F**k, I ruined it didn’t I?”
“No!” Boyfriend suddenly speaks. “No, you didn't, Pico.”
He looks up.
“Thank you for telling me.” Boyfriend pauses, thinking of what to say. “When… when we broke up, I felt that way too. I wanted to go back,
“but then I met Girlfriend.”
Boyfriend looks up at him. “I don’t blame you for anything, and although I don’t feel the same way anymore…” He gives him a warm smile. “I’m glad that we’re friends again.”
Pico laughs. “You piece of sh*t, always being so sentimental.” He pauses.
“...Thanks.”
“Of course.”
Boyfriend digs around in his pocket and tosses something at Pico.
Pico catches it on instinct and smiles at the mic in his hand.
Boyfriend grabs another one. “Wanna sing?”
Pico smiles back. “Always.”
Boyfriend offers him a fistbump and Pico gladly takes it.
Only friends.
Nothing more.
