My hope

Summary:

Mukuro Ikusaba is a member of the ultimate despair, incapable of hope. Or so she thought. An angel-voiced high school girl begs to differ.

Work Text:

It happened on a foggy, cold night. Mukuro was driving in her car, all alone in the cold, her only company was the corpses rotting in the back seat. She decided to turn the radio on, the silence was giving mukuro a headache.

The announcer was talking about some world renowned girl-group. Mukuro was never into that kind of thing but she let the music echo through the car. The music was mediocre at best and completely not her taste but something felt different about it. Yeah now that she listens closer, there was an angelic voice singing along with the others, it made mukuro feel warm. Hopeful, even. After the song finished the announcer repeated the name of the band. Mukuro flicked the radio off and kept a mental note of that girl-group.

The next time mukuro had any free time she went online and searched up the band, it was made up of five main singers, all about her age. She watched a few music videos and came to the conclusion that the angelic voice was that of a dark blue haired girl named Sayaka maizono.

With every spare second mukuro would listen to sayaka's voice. Watching every interview and listening to every album.

It made mukuro feel sick. Sayaka had brought her so much hope... What would Junko think of her. But the feeling of warmth was far louder than mukuro's concerns.

Sayaka gave mukuro a reason to keep going, to endure her training as a member of fenrir and to enlist in hopes peak as a part of her sisters cruel plan.

On her first day of hopes peak academy. Mukuro cried. Not in front of her classmates, but alone in the bathroom during her lunch break. She cried tears of pure joy. But those tears turned quickly from tears of joy to tears of despair. She had been ecstatic that her hope, Sayaka maizono was her classmate at hopes peak. Only to realise what her classmates all had in common. All of them would be forced to be a part of junko's killing game in two years.

She knew for a fact that Sayaka was never a fan of people obsessing over her as an idol, that's why she didn't bring Up her admiration for Sayaka or her band. To be completely honest, mukuro hadn't so much as approached Sayaka since the beginning of the day. She was to scared.

Mukuro walked out of the stall with her head down and buried her head in her hands once she arrived at the sink. She started sobbing. Imagining Sayaka in a puddle of blood. It would be mukuro's fault. Sayaka would die because of her. What a cruel twist of fate. In an attempt to bring despair to the world, her one hope would have to die.

"Are you okay?"

An angelic voice spoke those words to a crying mukuro. She'd recognise that voice anywhere. Mukuro immediately wiped her tears in an attempt to play it off.

"YEAH. yeah I'm fine."

Mukuro's face must've been redder than perfectly ripe tomatoes because Sayaka giggled and said.

"If you say so"

Sayaka then took mukuro's hand and dragged her out of the bathroom.

Sayaka skipped over to a scrawny brown haired boy sitting by himself at a table for four, mukuro still in hand.

"HEY NAEGI! LOOK! I FOUND A NEW FRIEND! HER NAME IS- uhh what's your name again?"

"Mukuro Ikusaba. I don't believe you told me your name either."

Sayaka sat down opposite to the boy and mukuro awkwardly sat next to her. Sayaka didn't let go of her hand as they sat down.

"Oh yeah. I'm Sayaka maizono." She said and she motioned to the boy sitting opposite to them.

"I'm Makoto naegi, nice to meet you Ikusaba!"

Makoto smiled and took a spoonful of rice from a bowl on his tray. Oh yeah, mukuro realised, this was school. not fenrir, they were allowed to eat during the day.

"C'mon Mukuro! Let's get our food! I'm starving!"

Sayaka was grinning ear to ear and with a sigh mukuro followed her to the canteen area. They filled their plates with food and returned to Makoto.

"Sooo Ikusaba, what's your ultimate talent? I researched most of the well known ultimates before I got here but I don't remember seeing you name anywhere."

Makoto asked, tilting his head slightly. It was strange that he has researched ultimates before arriving here but mukuro didn't comment on that.

"I'm the ultimate soldier. You?"

Makoto's face went through a few emotions. Subtle confusion, awe, slight fear and lastly embarrassment.

"I... Don't actually have an ultimate talent. I got in through a lottery."

He admitted, still a little bashful.

"YUP! and I couldn't be happier that you did! Because now a have a friend here! I'm the ultimate pop sensation by the way!"

Sayaka said through a mouthful of omelet.

"Also, mukuro you're the ultimate soldier? Crazy. Have you ever killed someone?"

Sayaka asked, she said it relatively light-heartedly despite what she was asking mukuro to reveal. Mukuro considered lying, but lying to Sayaka felt wrong so she just said the honest truth and quite bluntly.

"Yes I have. What kind of soldier would I be if I hadn't."

Makoto just blinked and Sayaka said:

"Cool. Kinda saw that coming honestly."

And continued eating.

The three of them kept up that awkward conversation untill the bell finally rang. Mukuro packed away her things and headed of to her scheduled class. Only to find Sayaka there too.

Mukuro felt like the luckiest girl in the world. Her hope was not only in her class. But had called mukuro her friend.

It almost made her forget about the killing game. almost.
