The stars were trapped in a web of illusions.
Saihara Shuichi sat beneath the eaves of a ruined celestial observatory, pulling his dark cap lower to hide the small, ivory horns curling from his hair. He was a Hakutaku—a sacred beast of truth. He possessed an extra eye hidden beneath his bangs that could see through any illusion, perceive every curse, and look directly into a person's soul. It was a exhausting blessing. Most spirits lied to survive; Shuichi saw those lies, and it made him deeply, profoundly lonely.
"A song sounds best when it echoes off the stars, don't you think?"
Shuichi looked up. Floating down on a cloud of stardust was Akamatsu Kaede. She was an earthly incarnation of Benzaiten—the goddess of music and flowing water. She held a spiritual biwa that resembled a grand piano, and as her fingers brushed the strings, the night air vibrated with a melody that felt like a warm embrace.
"I... I don't think my eyes belong in a place this beautiful," Shuichi murmured, casting his gaze down.
"Then look at me," Kaede smiled, floating closer until her feet touched the stone floor. "Music never lies, Saihara-kun. You don't have to hide your horns here."
Her melody acted as a beacon, drawing in the strange, fractured spirits wandering the celestial borderlands.
First came Amami Rantaro, a Yatagarasu—a legendary three-legged crow spirit. He wore a traveling cloak woven from midnight feathers, his eyes carrying the weary wisdom of a creature who had flown across a thousand worlds and lost his way home.
"Mind if I rest by your fire?" Rantaro asked, his shadow shifting to reveal his grand, avian wings. "The lower worlds are getting dangerous."
"Gahahahaha! Let them try to cross into our sky!"
A terrifying roar shattered the peace as Momota Kaito materialized from a thundercloud. He was a Nue—a magnificent, chaotic beast with the head of a monkey, the legs of a tiger, and a snake for a tail. Yet, despite his terrifying appearance, his mane was filled with glowing cosmic stardust. Standing quietly in his shadow was Harukawa Maki. She was a Kamaitachi (sickle-weasel), but unlike the playful wind-demons of the forest, her wind was lethal, sharp, and stained with the heavy scent of iron. She was an assassin of the spirit world, hiding from her own past.
"Don't get careless, idiot," Maki muttered, her fingers twitching near her hidden blades. "We aren't alone."
Out of the mist stepped Ouma Kokichi. He was a Nurarihyon—the slippery leader of the yōkai, a creature of pure mischief who moved without making a sound and claimed to command an army of ten thousand demons. He grinned, his purple eyes glittering with malicious glee.
"Nee-heehee! A goddess, a truth-beast, and a giant monkey-tiger? What a pathetic little party!" Kokichi laughed, sitting cross-legged on the observatory railing. "Everything I just said was a lie, by the way! Or was it?"
Shuichi’s hidden eye pulsed. He saw the loneliness buried deep within the trickster's hollow chest, a truth Kokichi would rather die than admit.
The observatory grounds quickly grew into a chaotic sanctuary for the remaining V3 outcasts:
Tojo Kirumi moved silently among them as a Bakeneko—a split-tailed cat spirit who had dedicated her existence to serving others as a flawless maid, her feline agility allowing her to mend the broken observatory structures in seconds.
In the courtyard, Yumeno Himiko—a tiny Kitsune whose illusions were so weak she insisted they were "real magic"—was being fiercely protected by Chabashira Tenko. Tenko was a Komainu (guardian lion-dog) who spent her time screaming and throwing "degenerate male spirits" over the balcony to keep Himiko safe.
"Witness my dark rituals!" Shinguji Korekiyo whispered from the shadows. He was a Kuchisake-Onna variant—a slit-mouthed spirit who wore a zipped mask over his face, obsessively documenting human folklore. Beside him, Yonaga Angie danced, a Kami spirit channeling the chaotic whim of a distant ocean god through her paintbrushes.
Deep in the surrounding woods lived Gokuhara Gonta, a gentle Oni who refused to use his massive strength to fight, preferring to protect the tiny nature spirits. He sat peacefully beside Hoshi Ryoma, a Tsuchigoko (earth spirit) who had lost his clan and lived a solitary life, smoking a pipe made of pine.
Inside the workshop, Iruma Miu—a foul-mouthed Karakuri doll spirit made of gears and brass—was loudly altering the chassis of Kiibo. Kiibo was a pure Shikigami, a paper-doll spirit brought to life by mechanical sorcery, who constantly demanded to be treated as a real yōkai.
"I will sue you if you call my gears unscientific!" Miu shrieked.
Controlling the outer illusions of their sanctuary was Shirogane Tsumugi. She was a Tsukuyomi—a moon spirit who could weave the fabric of stories and history itself, though she insisted she was just a "terribly plain" weaver of cosmic fabric.
Suddenly, a rift tore open in the sky. A swarm of corrupted shadow-spirits, born from the human world's fear of the dark, poured into the sanctuary. They sought to consume the fragile peace the outcasts had built.
Maki drew her winds. Kaito roared, his cosmic mane exploding into a galaxy of defensive fire. Tenko threw herself in front of Himiko, and Gonta stood like a mountain against the encroaching dark.
But the illusions were overwhelming, distorting the battlefield.
"Saihara-kun!" Kaede called out, her fingers striking a powerful, resonant chord on her biwa that shattered the enemy's acoustic camouflage. "Tell them where to strike!"
Shuichi reached up. For the first time, he ripped his cap from his head, exposing his ivory horns and opening his hidden third eye completely. A beam of piercing, radiant blue light cut through the battlefield, burning away Tsumugi’s false shadows and exposing the true cores of the enemy spirits.
"There!" Shuichi shouted, pointing his finger with absolute certainty. "The center of the vortex! That is where the lie begins!"
With the truth laid bare, Kaito’s stardust flames and Maki’s razor-winds struck with flawless precision. Kokichi laughed wildly, using his own deceptive illusions to misdirect the remaining shadows into Gonta’s crushing grip. Within moments, the sky cleared, leaving only the quiet sparkle of falling stars.
Shuichi breathed heavily, his chest heaving as he braced himself for the others to look away from his monstrous, multi-eyed form.
Instead, Kaede walked up to him, placing her warm hand gently over his third eye. "Thank you, Saihara-kun. Your truth saved us all."
Kaito clapped a heavy, tiger-clawed hand onto his shoulder. "Hell yeah, sidekick! That was a magnificent look!"
Shuichi blinked his normal eyes, looking around at the gathered monsters, dolls, and gods. For the first time in his existence, the truth didn't hurt. Under the starlit sky, surrounded by his chaotic, beautiful family, he finally felt at home.
