Chapter Text
The Squid Games include a series of children's games which are turned into death games. Only those who are struggling join these games, invited by a salesman who persuades people who play Ddakji (딱지), a traditional Korean game. If the person playing is able to win, they receive an amount of cash. The salesman introduces the Squid Games as something that allows the participants to receive even more money than the amount they made playing this game. In this year’s game of Squid Game, the participants include (ex) students of the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles. Every student ends up struggling, seeking money for different purposes despite being quite gifted in their talent. They’re all recruited to the Games by the Salesman. The Salesman gives everyone who had been chosen a card with shapes, which, if called, tells whoever called where they must go, which was a mysterious vehicle, taking them to the location of the games.
When calling the number, to confirm their identity, they must state their full name and birth date. One participant calls and gives their information. “Akamatsu, Kaede. My date of birth is.. March twenty-sixth, #%$?.” Once their information is confirmed by the operator, they are told to go to a specific location on the streets where a vehicle picks them up with a guard in a red jumpsuit driving after they state the code to get in, “Red Light, Green Light”. Gas comes from the roof, making the person who enters unconscious. The guards in these jumpsuits all have different shapes on the masks covering their faces. Circle, triangle, and square. Their identities must be kept a secret at all times— which isn’t relevant but should be known.
While unconscious, everyone is changed into a green jacket, with numbers on it, pants, and a shirt. Once the participants are woken up, they have entered the game. Squid Game. The games have officially begun. Classical music fills the room. Bunk beds were stacked on top of each other with four hundred fifty six participants gathered around, all desperate for the money award they were told they’d receive, except, no one knew that joining would lead to most of their deaths, oblivious to the harsh reality. Rewards are never free. They must be earned.

The players get up and gather on the floor as the red-suited guards come into the room with guns. "I would like to extend a hearty welcome to all of you. Everyone here will participate in six different games over six days. Everyone here will participate in six different games over six days." The rules listed are, number one, a player is forbidden from refusing to play a game. Number two, any player who does not participate is immediately eliminated. And the third and final rule, the games may be stopped if the majority of players vote for it to stop, which after each game, a vote is casted whether to keep playing or to end the games there.
Players sign a contract, ensuring that they will be playing before the games truly begin for them. Participants get in several lines to sign the contact. Immediately, right after, the first game of the deadly game begins. Red Light, Green Light. The same code which allowed players to enter the vehicle. Before the game began, Shuichi had recognized Kaede as one of the players. “I didn’t know you’d be here. What a coincidence that you’re struggling with money as well, even if you were so successful with the piano. I’ve also observed that most of our former classmates are also here. How odd.” He says. Kaede essentially ignored him for a moment and then said, “that school must’ve messed up all our chances of success. How unfortunate that all of us are struggling so much that we joined this weird game, huh?” Before he could respond, the game rules were being stated. It’s practically the essential childhood that everyone— well, probably everyone— has played.
It’s just red light green light. When the massive doll at the end turned to look at the players, they must not move. When it faces away, they must run to the finish line. The process goes on and on until the timer ends. Whoever remains before the finish line gets eliminated. “Elimination” isn’t explicitly stated yet though. The doll turns, saying “무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다.” (This translates to, the hibiscus flower has bloomed, basically saying red light green light.) Most players only move slightly, unlike some fool who had run across the field, unknowing of the consequences. The eerie doll slowly turns around, and one gunshot is fired. Other players had gotten so startled by the noise and the blood splattering, they had fled, crawling at the doors before the start line. Gunshots fired at all the players who had run, more blood going onto the ground. Thankfully, only around 90-ish players had died from that, meaning a portion of the players had died. The time limit is five minutes until everyone remaining dies. Soon enough, the timer ends.
After the first game of Squid Game, players return to their resting place of where they woke up. A money bank comes in from the ceiling, revealing a total amount of 9.1 billion won (959 million yen).
The game has only started. It's only the beginning of the nightmares
