“How are you settling in, Sergeant Chen?” Wade Grey is standing in her office doorway and smiling at her.
“It’s been an adjustment, but I feel like it’s been pretty smooth.” She had transferred to Mid-Wilshire as Watch Commander and has only been here for three weeks. Wade knew her from the academy and her rookie days. “Everyone has been welcoming and receptive, well, mostly.” It has been a welcome change.
Grey knows who she’s talking about and they both share a laugh. “Sorry, Smitty is a mess.”
“He makes a mess of a lot of things, but I do enjoy scaring him a bit.” Lucy rubs her forehead. “I can’t thank you enough for everything that you’ve done for me.”
Grey is proud of Lucy and everything she has accomplished. “You’ve done almost all of it on your own. I’m proud of you and the cop you’ve become.”
Lucy blushes. “Thank you. Both you and Luna should come for dinner this weekend.”
“We’d like that. How about Saturday?” It works because they’re both off that day.
“That sounds perfect and don’t try to bring anything. You two can just show up.” Lucy says pointedly.
Grey shrugs. “Good luck with that.” He leaves her office and she shakes her head knowing that she won’t win that battle.
Lucy’s working on paperwork when she hears a noise from holding. She looks through the window and sees that a suspect has started a brawl. She shoots through the window of her office and jumps through. Her arm gets sliced but she doesn’t pay much attention to it. Her focus is putting all the suspects in a holding cell and making sure that no one is seriously hurt. Lucy manages to put most of them down but one manages to get a few punches in. She’s still managed to come out of it pretty much unscathed.
Unfortunately, one of the suspects died and Celina is investigated because of it. Chris Sanford tries to make her life a living hell, but thankfully Wesley was there to help. “I’m sorry about him.”
“It’s not your fault. I haven’t been here long and I’m sure he’s going to test me as much as he can.” Lucy has heard that Sanford is a pain in the ass, but it’s nothing she can’t handle. “Or he’s just a dick for fun. Who knows.”
Wes chuckles. “I’ll make sure that he doesn’t do anything else like this. Oh by the way, Angela has asked if you’d like to come over next weekend. You are already a part of this little family.”
Lucy blushes slightly. “I think I’m free but let me double check a few things and I’ll get back to you.” Wesley leaves and Lucy goes back to finish her paperwork.
By the end of the day, she is beyond exhausted. It has been a long day and even her eyes hurt. Lucy goes to change and then sneaks out of the station before anyone else can talk to her. She caught up the night shift before she changed and now she’s focused on getting one.
Once Lucy walks into the house, she feels a sense of relief. “Tim, I’m home.” The house is quiet and she wonders where her husband is. Kojo hasn’t even come to greet her, which is unusual. “Tim, babe.” Lucy walks further into the house and frowns when both the bedroom and living room are empty. His truck is outside. “Tim, where are you?”
Lucy sees the back sliding door is open and when she walks outside, her heart instantly melts. She pulls her phone out and takes a few pictures. Tim is fast asleep with their three and a half month old daughter, Maya, laying on his chest. His arms are wrapped around her and it’s the absolute sweetest thing.
Lucy kneels beside the lounge chair and rubs her hand through Tim’s hair. “Baby.” She murmurs and Tim’s eyes start to blink open.
“Hey, you’re home.” Her arms are wrapped around Maya’s back along with Tim’s. “We missed you so much.”
Lucy smiles and places a soft kiss on Tim’s lips. “I’ve missed you both so much but I came home to the most adorable sight. Best part of my day.”
Tim holds onto Maya and sits up. “Well, we had a busy day.” Lucy really did miss them. “And we really hate when mommy is at work.”
“I love coming home and seeing you two. It is even better when Maya is curled on your chest.” Lucy sits next to them and lays her head on Tim’s shoulder.
Tim grabs Lucy’s hand. “Someone is just like their mama and absolutely loves sleeping in my arms.”
“The smartest and most adorable girl.” Lucy murmurs. She runs her hand along her daughter’s back.
“We have dinner in the crock pot for you.” Lucy is so grateful for her husband and he notices a look flash across her face. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
“It’s been a rough day and you’re just amazing. I need cuddles from my favorite people.” Tim hands Maya over and Lucy wraps her arms around her daughter. “Go sit down and I’ll work on dinner for us.” Tim can see her about to argue. “Don’t do that. I’ve got you.” Lucy rests her head against Tim’s chest and he wraps his girls in his arms.
“You’re incredible.” She mumbles and Tim kisses the top of her head.
Lucy goes to sit and Maya wakes up. A small smile appears and she starts whimpering for food. Lucy has been pumping for work but she takes every moment that she can to feed her when she’s home. Maya easily latches and looks up at her mom. “Is that better baby girl?” Tim can’t help but stare at them.
Once Maya goes to sleep, Tim pulls Lucy into bed and she curls into her husband. “I was invited to Angela’s next weekend.”
“That sounds fun.” Tim tells her.
“I can finally show off the two most important people in my life.” Tim is a stay at home dad now after serving in the military for twenty years. He retired after doing his time and loves being home with Maya. He is so unbelievably proud of his wife for everything she has accomplished.
“It’ll be fun to meet everyone.” He knows she’s tired and had a long day.
Tim wakes up before Lucy the following morning and when he walks back into the room, Maya is fast asleep against Lucy, whose eyes are closed. “I’ve got coffee.”
“My hero.” Maya has not yet mastered sleeping through the night but it’s a lot better than it was. “I love my job but I hate leaving you two. It’s not easy.” Tim knows she’s been struggling since she went back three weeks ago and he feels bad. He has tried to do what he can to ease this transition for her.
“I will continue to do whatever I can to make things easier. I know my words won’t help but I’m proud of you and Maya is too.” Tim wipes a few tears off her face. “But you can take more time if you need to. We have plenty in our savings.”
Lucy sniffles. “I appreciate you so much. I’ll be okay. She’s in the absolute best hands, ever, it’s just hard.” Tim has a soft smile on his face.
Not even an hour later, Lucy’s on her way to work. She has three days off after this and can’t wait to spend time with her family. She has back to back meetings in the morning and Chris Sanford managed to come harass her. Angela and Nyla pushed him out and Lucy was grateful for them. Smitty and Nolan both manage to destroy their shops and her head is pounding. She rubs her temple and is ready to go home. Penn was kind enough to make her a perfect cup of tea, for which she is grateful.
There’s a knock on her door and she swears she is ready to cry until she hears a voice clearing. Standing there is her incredibly wonderful, beautiful, loving husband with their adorable daughter strapped in her carrier. She’s fast asleep and her little hand is curled in a fist against Tim’s chest. “You don’t know how happy I am to have you here right now.” Lucy doesn’t care where she is right now, she needs some comfort. She stands up and immediately falls into his arms.
“I had a feeling you might need this today.” Lucy nods against him. “Do you have some time for lunch?”
“I will make time for you, always.” She murmurs and looks up into Tim’s eyes. Her hand is resting against Maya’s back. “Thank you for always knowing what I need. I missed you two.”
“I’ll always be here for you in every single way. Now, let’s go grab some lunch and you can have some baby cuddles.” Maya is still sleeping against her daddy.
“That sounds perfect.” She walks with Tim out of her office to Angela, Nyla, Penn, and Celina staring at her. “Can I help you?”
Angela grins at her. “You forget to tell us something, Lucy?”
Tim chuckles beside her. “Nope, I don’t think so.”
Angela gives her a look. “Who are they?”
“Tim Bradford.” He speaks up. “I’m her baby daddy.”
Lucy giggles and so do the others. “And my very hot husband. This is Maya, our daughter.”
“She’s beautiful.” Nyla walks closer. “We look forward to interrogating you two at Angela’s next weekend since you didn’t bother to tell us about them.” She teases.
“Oh, I believe it.” Lucy shakes her head. “We’re going to get lunch for now.” She grabs Tim’s hand and leads him out of the station.
They eat lunch together and it’s just what Lucy needs to get through the rest of her day. When she gets home that night, Tim is in their bed with Maya fast asleep against his chest again. “Come here.” He opens his arms and holds both his girls. “This is my favorite time of day.”
“There’s absolutely nothing better than this.” Lucy’s voice is tired and quiet. “Thank you for coming to see me today. I needed it more than you know.”
“I’ll visit you every day if you let me.” Tim rubs her back. “Or whatever you want or need me to do.”
“I do love the sound of that.” Lucy snuggles further into Tim. “But if you keep coming into the station with our adorable daughter attached to you, we’re definitely going to make baby number two.” Tim’s brain seemingly breaks and it’s probably one of her favorite things to do in life.
